Is It Too Late To Plant Potatoes?
When I went to the feed store the other day to pick up chicken food… there was a sign on a bunch old seed potatoes.
FREE POTATOES
So I took some. Do you think it’s too late to plant them for this year? Don’t you think if I plant them now I’ll at least have some “new potatoes” this fall?

Bet you might have a good chance for some nice baby poptatoes…hope you do give it a try as iquiring minds would like to know how it turns out.
i’d try it. you won’t be out anything but the effort.
This year anything goes! I think we are going to have some warmer days, that usually last at least through Sept… It’s worth the try!
Here in Southern California, Oh yeah, you could totally do it. I dont know about where you live.
It would be too late where I live. For you, I don’t know. Might as well try…can’t hurt anything, right?
OH I am excited to find out how yours do! We are looking at the same option…. as we’ve stumbled across either free or seriously reduced seed potatoes but we live in central Indiana and the temps are brutal right now. Heat in the mid/upper 90′s, high humidity, and night time lows of 80.

I would do it. Once they bloom, you can dig them. At worst (if you have a freak killing frost or something) they’ll probably grow again next year. We always have tons of volunteers every spring. And baby potatoes are THE BEST!!
We have been hit by a drought this year in KY, and it has been severe. Also, this past winter was more like an extended fall with little to no sustained freezes. So as you can imagine , the bugs are plentiful and searching for water. My garden, that is watered daily, has been a breeding ground for all species. All this to say, I had to dig my potatoes a bit early in fear of losing them all to the bugs. I have since been able to irradicate the pests, and have now replanted from from leftover “seed” potatoes that have some great eyes. I really am excited about a late planting, just to see if it can be accomplished, as well as recover from a somewhat disappointing harvest. I have marked my calendar and will report back as to my results. By the way, this section of garden is a 5′x 12′ raised bed garden, filled with loamy topsoil, broken down manure approx 5 years old, leafy mulch, straw, sand, and garden mulch. Any suggestions… I am all ears…
