Originally I had planed on growing food in the greenhouse all winter, but once the main crops had been harvested outside, and the rain started in about a month ago, I kept on forgetting to water the plants inside the glass house. Shame on me.
So today I cleaned out the greenhouse. I emptied the dried out, soil filled gutters onto the compost heap, and then lined them up along side the greenhouse.
I’ll scrub the gutters down in a few weeks once I figure out what I’ll be growing in the greenhouse next.
Some of the food in the greenhouse was still edible, so we let the chickens free range for a few hours while we removed the pots, pallets, gutters and excess dirt.
Does anyone know if chickens can smell? Because as soon as I started pulling Swiss chard and spinach from the greenhouse, Black Fatty and her crew came running.
Life is good!

Cute boots!
I think my chickens can smell. Sometimes they will walk up to on of my offerings, appear to smell it and walk away without even tasting it. But more often than not, the girls seem to get a sense for my behavior and know when I am bringing them something and then they come running. Who knows what is going through their tiny little brains. I just know they have trained me to want to please them. HAHA!
I wish I knew too. Chickens are so funny.
Doesn’t the overwhelming sense of the possible come over you when you see a blank slate like a cleaned out greenhouse? My tiny little garden has been filling my head with possibility since I cleaned it out. Time to order seed catalogs to keep my happy through our Nor’Easters. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
I agree Tessa.
Oh, and thank you so, so, so much for posting the vegan pumpkin bar recipe. My little two year old niece has major egg allergies, and this dessert is one that I am bringing to Thanksgiving because I know she will be able to enjoy it too. You rock Mavis.
Yay! They are soooo moist. Yum Yum Yum!
So,,,, did ya weigh the gleanings from the green house?
I sure did!
