This past week in the free chicken scrap boxes there was such an abundance of spinach, we ended up giving a bunch of it away to a few of our neighbors. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to eat it fresh so I didn’t want to freeze any of it.  But now in hindsight, I should have frozen it for the HH’s spinach smoothies.  Oh well, I guess I’ll freeze it next time.

We ended up saving some watermelon, grapes, cilantro and a several handfuls of spinach.

Since it was Christmas, and the chickens LOVE melon, we decided to give them the majority of them.

Even though picking up the scraps and processing them has a little time consuming, I think it’s been totally worth it this past year and we are looking forward to doing it again next year as well.

Life is good!

Peace Out Girl Scouts, have a great day.  Now go forth and eat trash!

  1. Heather S. says:

My husband likes to make fruit smoothies with spinach and/or kale for breakfast. I actually prepackage them into sandwich baggies and freeze them that way. He just dumps it into the blender with some coconut water or apple juice and blends it for breakfast.

  2. I like to use spinach with a bit of basil to make pesto. It freezes really well, and I love popping out a bag of fresh pesto in the middle of winter, or on a busy night.

  3. I’ve checked with a couple of grocery stores around here and they won’t give their scrap produce away—they throw it away instead. Apparently somewhere somebody ate food given for their farm animals, got sick, and sued the grocery store. So now they won’t give any scraps. Bummer. Do you get yours from an independent store or a chain?

  4. You got cilantro?! I’m jealous.
