pink Camilla flower

Happy Tuesday and good morning everyone.

Poor Mrs. HB. A deer came along and ate the bottom half of both her potted Camilla flowers she has planted at in front of her porch.

There are a few flowers blooming at towards the top of the plant though, aren’t they pretty? Do you have any special tricks for keeping deer out of YOUR yard? If so, leave a comment below and I’ll pass them along to Mrs. HB.

In the mean time, here are a few deals I spotted this morning.

  1. Hi Mavis,
I’ve used the black bird netting to protect plants from deer. It might not look attractive up close but you can’t see it once you’re a few feet away. Your neighbor might want to cover them just at night.

  2. This may sound weird, but tell Mrs. HB that I’ve found human hair does the trick. When I cut my husband’s and son’s hair, I put some of it in the potted plants on my front porch. We have deer walking through our neighborhood daily. Before I tried this, they would come right up to the front door and eat the flowers. Now they won’t come near the pots!!

  3. I’ve heard hanging Irish Spring Soap on the bushes/flowers/plants work. Apparently, the deer hate the smell and avoid it.

  4. If the deer are really accustomed to urban life and people, like they are in Victoria, human hair doesn’t phase them. Besides building a fortress around the garden, bird netting is the most cost effective way to keep them out. We loosely draped the netting secured with big rocks that my kids painted. When its time to garden, simply lift the netting and weed/harvest away. This also helped prevent squirrels making off with food too. The deer on Vancouver Island are highly urbanized and are not fazed by people, pets, cars or over excited three year olds.

    • Deer roam our neighborhood daily, even during the day. They aren’t phased by anything or anyone. I tell you, the human hair really works!! Without it, the deer came right up to my front door and ate all my flowers. With the hair, they don’t come near. I’m a believer. Do what works for you :)

  5. My mailman told me that there is a liquid that they sell at the hardware store that works awesome at keeping deer away, He said it works great for him. Amazon sells some repellents.
