{My goal has been met for 2012} This year my goal is to grow 2,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables. I think I can do it. With 16 raised garden beds, a greenhouse, a raspberry patch and a few more planting beds sprinkled throughout our property, I believe growing 2,000 pounds of food is an attainable goal. I was so busy planting bulbs, pulling brush, and planning next years garden this past week, I didn’t get a chance to harvest any kale.  I know, how tragic right?

But as I sat down to figure out what seeds I needed to order for my 2013 garden, I took a look back at what I grew in my 2012 garden, and was surprised at what I saw.

Even though there was a ton of work done behind the scenes, the pictures showed my garden didn’t really take off until the end of May. I don’t know why it surprised me, I mean it’s just the normal flow of things.  But still, I was stunned.

If I could only have one gardening book on my bookshelf this would be the one. The Gardener’s A-Z Guide to Growing Organic Food By Tanya L.K. Denckla.  This book is loaded with growing methods of practically every vegetable the backyard gardener is going to grow in their garden.  I received this book several years ago and it’s still the one I use when I have questions.  Amazon currently has this in stock and ready to ship.

This past week I pulled up four more kale plants for the chickens {almost 5 pounds worth}, and harvested a few basil leaves for a pot of soup.

I was letting the chickens out in the backyard to free range and forage for garden scraps, but I quickly noticed they really liked digging in my newly planted raised flowers beds more than the garden.  So for now I’m just letting a few out at a time so I can keep an eye on them.

I’m still working on my garden plans for 2013 and will hopefully have them wrapped up soon and then I’ll be ready to share.  After a month or so off from any major gardening, I’m starting to get excited again about taking on some new projects.

Well I did it.

I pulled up all the cabbage, beets, broccoli, most of the kale, most of the Swiss Chard, and all but 1 of the Brussels Sprout plants.  The greens filled two wheelbarrows full, and after hauling the bathroom scale out to the garage, and standing there with buckets and buckets of produce, the final tally was 42 pounds, 7 ounces of goods.

Holy Crap.  It did it!  I grew 2023+ pounds of food, in just 11 months.

This past week I was able to harvest 9 pounds 11 ounces of potatoes {gleaned} kale, lettuce and broccoli.  I gave all the greens to the chickens and kept the potatoes to eat.  With only 19+ pounds to go until I reach my goal, I may just harvest the rest of it tomorrow so the chickens can enjoy a nice big Thanksgiving feast along with the rest of us.

If I had to guess, I’d say the chickens are pretty thankful for all their scraps this year, and that they are chickens and not turkeys. Ha!

So what do you think?  Should I just go out there and try to harvest 20 pounds of greens tomorrow and get this over with, or should I keep torturing myself with small harvests?  I’m going to let you decided in the comments below.  Majority Rules.

I’m almost there people!  This week I was able to harvest a little over 13 pounds of food from our backyard garden.  Brussels sprouts, apples, cauliflower, kale, Swiss chard and broccoli all made their way into our kitchen {or the chicken run}.  Not to shabby for the middle of November if you ask me.  Later today I plan on going out to the greenhouse to see if there is anything left to harvest.  Fingers crossed.

With only 28+ pounds to go I think I can do this.  How crazy would that be?  Crazy lady in Suburbia grows 2,000 pounds of vegetables in her back yard, just because she thought it would be fun.  Yep, I’m a nut!

This past week  I was able to harvest potatoes, onions, spinach, broccoli, and a few raspberries for my family to eat.  And for the chickens I harvested Swiss chard, bok choy and kale.  Chickens LOVE kale.  Yee-Haw!

Sadly, I have not reached my goal of 2,000 pounds of vegetables.  However, after a few walks around the garden this weekend, I’m fairly confident I will be able to harvest the remaining 41+ pounds of food I need to reach my goal.  And since I’d like to be able to have a few weeks off from garden chores, I may end up going on a harvest binge here in the next week or two.  I’ll keep you posted.

This book is loaded with growing methods of practically every vegetable the backyard gardener is going to grow in their garden. I received this book several years ago and it’s still the one I use when I have questions. Amazon currently has this in stock and ready to ship.

This year my goal is to grow 2,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables. I think I can do it. With 16 raised garden beds, a greenhouse, a raspberry patch and a few more planting beds sprinkled throughout our property, I believe growing 2,000 pounds of food is an attainable goal. Even if I do live right in the middle of high maintenance suburbia, and my neighbors think I’m nuts. ~Mavis

This past week I was able to harvest 28+ pounds potatoes, tomatoes, a wee bit of broccoli and plenty of bok choy, kale and Swiss chard for the chickens.  If I am going to reach this goal of growing a ton of food in the back yard, I’m going to have to dig deep and find some other sort of vegetable crack to harvest in the backyard… and quick.

I now have only 61 days to go, and it’s going to be tough. I would love nothing more in the world right now than to go out back and rip up all the plants so I could take the rest of the year off from gardening.

But I can’t. Because I’m in it to win it.  Even if it comes down to 11:59 pm on December 31st and I’m out there with a headlamp on harvesting that last leaf of kale.

Wish me luck.  I’m going to need it.

Thank goodness for all potatoes and squash last week!

Holy cow man, I hope I can make it.  The only heavy thing left to harvest is one more bed of potatoes.  After that, it’s all little stuff like, kale, Swiss chard, a wee bit of broccoli, radishes, lettuce, a few peas, and some greenhouse tomatoes {pending we don’t have a huge ice st0rm and everything freezes}.  At this point I’m not counting on the carrots or beets making it before New Years Eve {when the challenge is over}.

I’m totally wishing now I would have counted eggs. We’ll see.  I hope I can make it to my goal of growing 2,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables this year.

Only 68 days to go! Yikes!

Holy canolies!

Well it was a great week for harvesting tomatoes and greens, but the big winner was pumpkins!  Yesterday I was able to harvest a little over 170 pounds of pumpkins from our backyard pumpkin patch, plus the day before our big harvest, Girly Girl’s kids were able to come over a pick several pumpkins for their front porch as well.

Even though things are staring to wind down in the garden, there is still plenty to do outside.  I still have my fall potatoes to harvest, as well a more squash, Swiss Chard, kale and there are still a few tomato plants to pull yet.  Let’s just hope I can get the 225 +/- pounds of vegetables I need to reach my goal of growing 2,000 pounds of produce in our backyard garden before the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Eeeek!  I’m excited!

It’s too cold to garden!

Pretty soon I’ll have to pull out my winter boots and down jacket… Man oh man has the weather started to change.  We woke up to a chilly house this morning and I thought for sure the Handsome Husband was going to go out back and grab some wood to start a fire.

I can only imagine what it must be like to garden in Alaska or something. I bet they must grow everything inside.

Well, as far as my backyard garden goes, things are moving {or growing} right along.  I was out of town for most of last week so I didn’t get around to picking much, but The Girl and I did pick a few pumpkins last night, along with some tomatoes, and greens on Monday.  So I think today is going to be a serious work day for me out in the garden.  Which is a good thing, as I know there is a ton of little projects that need my attention.
