Tonight, The Girl and I will be watching Vegucated.  Amazon describes the film as:

“…a guerrilla-style documentary that follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks and learn what it’s all about.”

Even though I’m not Vegan, it should be interesting.  I always like shows that cause people to step outside of their comfort zones and I’m sure my neighbor Francisco will have a discussion about it afterwards too. This should be interesting!

Part 1 of 2

Part 2 of 2

Tonight The Girl and I are going to watch a documentary I found on YouTube.com.  It looks like the whole documentary is available, so it’s a FREEBIE!  The film documents the contamination in our food supply–which could be a little scary, but knowledge is power, yada yada, so I am watching it anyway.

I have posted both parts here so you can watch it for free without having to search for it.  Let me know what you think…

Happy Friday,

Friday Night at the Movies – A Place at the Table

Tonight, The Girl and I will be watching A Place at the Table.  It is by the same people who made Food, Inc. {an AWESOME film!} so I am super excited.  The film explores the connection between the availability of healthy food and income.  Basically, it shows how lower income children are not getting the nutrition they need to be successful because whole foods are just too expensive.

Right now, the film is in theaters {check your local listings}, available for rent on iTunes, or On Demand {for those of you that have satellite}, and on Amazon Instant Video.  It looks like it is $6.99 to rent on amazon, which for me is totally worth it, because for the first 100,000 tickets, downloads, or books purchased, Plum Organics will donate one essential nutrition pouch to a baby or toddler.  It’s win-win, I get to watch the movie and a little of my money goes toward something I believe in.

A huge thanks to Jo on Facebook for this awesome recommendation!  If you have a movie recommendation for me, let me know in the comments below.

Friday Night at the Movies – The Real Dirt on Farmer John

Tonight The Girl and I are watching The Real Dirt on Farmer John.  It’s a PBS documentary about a man, who after years of struggle {it appears both internal and external}, is able to rally and evolve from traditional farming into a thriving Organic CSA Food Co-Op farmer {sheesh, that’s a mouthful}.  Farmer John is described as quirky and unique–hmm, I don’t know where I’ve heard that before?  Ha!

The film, although, a little bit older, got great reviews, and apparently, Farmer John has gone on to write a cookbook, The Real Dirt on Vegetables, which is also getting great reviews on Amazon.

Friday Night at the Movies – Hungry for Change

I know a lot of us grew up eating whatever we wanted {or at least I did}, without a second thought. Luckily The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird is much more aware of what she eats than I ever was, but now matter how much you already know, appreciating  the value of good, healthy whole foods is something I think we all need to be reminded about.

So if your looking for an eye opening documentary on the subject of food Hungry For Change looks like a good one.

Plus, as an added bonus, Jamie Oliver appears in this documentary.  I remember watching his show the Naked Chef a long time ago and I LOVE what he has done for the kids’s lunch programs in the US and Britain.  And, it doesn’t hurt that he is pretty cute either.

One Hundred Dollars A Month reader Birgit shared a link for this short film of Austrian reclaimed food cooking show Waste Cooking.{with English subtitles}

“Dumpster diving has become a kind of hip response to this waste of perfectly good food, and now a group of Austrian activists have taken “freeganism” to the next logical step: they’ve created a cooking show for food “rescued” from grocery and restaurant dumpsters.

Started last Spring, Waste Cooking follows food from dumpster to dinner table.

Part Food Network, part Greenpeace-style activism, each episode of the show {which is in German} follows the process of finding ingredients {complete with rubber gloves and headlamps}, and then making a meal out of the found food.”

What do you think? Is this something you could see yourself doing?

What do you think about the people who do this?

I just stumbled upon the documentary Garbage Warrior, and decided this is what we are watching for family movie night tonight.  Let us know if you watched it and what you thought about the documentary in the comment section below.

Description: Garbage Warrior

Imagine a home that heats itself, that provides its own water, that grows its own food. Imagine that it needs no expensive technology, that it recycles its own waste, that it has its own power source.

Shot over three years in the USA, India and Mexico, Garbage Warrior is a feature-length documentary film telling the epic story of maverick architect Michael Reynolds, his crew of renegade house builders from New Mexico, and their fight to introduce radically different ways of living.
