If you’ve got strep throat, does ice cream count as a medical expense? I mean, it seems pretty acceptable to me. What do you think? Yes or No.

Yes, we buy orange sherbet pops when the kids get sick. It is a comfort food item.
Brianna says
I have never had strep throat. I am an asymptomatic carrier of Strep and have managed to inadvertently give it to others. Anyhow, ice cream is definitely a medical expense as well as popsicles, they sell it them at CVS, so it makes sense.
Lisa says
It’s a medical necessity.
Hope the affected is feeling better.
Bec in the PNW says
Oh Mavis, you poor thing! I have a deeply ingrained memory of getting strep when I was younger and eating ice cream while crying. Hope that you’re better soon!
Mel says
I’m about to buy a trampoline and roller coaster for toddler physical therapy (to add to the pile of ridiculous stuff we already bought for that), so I think ice cream easily qualifies. We normally do Italian ice for sore throats/illness.
Feel better!
Rosemary says
Absolutely!!
Stephanie in Utah says
My dad calls ice cream medicine. “Good medicine!” My pediatrician told me to give my daughter popsicles and hard candy when she had a sore throat.
Suzanne Shaw says
What the heck?! You are like the 5th person I know (adult person!) that has been diagnosed with strep throat in the last 2 weeks! Feel better – I hear it’s awful.
Jennifer says
I had strep 34 years ago, at 21 and other than recovering from 3 C-sections, it was THE worst 2 weeks of my life. I would say anything from sleeping pills to a fifth of Jack should qualify as a medical expense.
Annette says
Excuuuuse me . . . It’s also calcium!
Lana says
I have had it recently too and I vote yes. Miserable illness for sure. Get well soon!
Samantha says
Absolutely, yes! Get well soon.
Margo says
Of course! Having had strep quite a few times when I was younger I know how painful that can be. Feel better soon!
Sue says
Yes! All the ice creams, sherbets, popsicles, and frozen novelties. And frozen grapes!
Hmm. I wonder if a cold wrap around your neck (while you are lying on the divan being waited on) would help any?
Get better soon!

Funny side step – Way back in the day, I was as a candystriper in high school, assigned to Pediatrics. School vacations, first day out for summer always meant a huge influx of tonsilectomies. My job was to dole out cold dollars – take em from the freezer, crack them over your thigh to break the ice, tie around the kid’s neck – and repeat. All the kids fought because, blast it, they were in pain. One kid really fought – imagine my chagrin when I found out he had an appendectomy, not a tonsilectomy. Cold collars do help, but not for an appendectomy.
Linda says
Cold dollar?
Rhea Strauser says
Correction – cold collar – basically a frozen, skinny, rectangular collar with ties on the end. Must admit this was late 60’s and is probably horribly outdated now.
Julie says
Yes, indeed!! Hope you’re feeling better!!! Anything that feels/tastes good is medicine!!!
HollyG says
It also works for a three-week respiratory infection with fever and crackling lungs – – – but only chocolate (the chunks in chocolate chip mint were not making my tummy happy). Hope you’re feeling better very soon
Kathleen says
I am a registered nurse and yes it counts
Rosaleen says
No, but it SHOULD be deductible as a medical expense.
Dawn says
Yes, oh, yes. Feel better soon!
Teri says
Definitely! The pineapple has Vitamin C! Hope you are feeling better!
Sue S. says
I vote YES!
Joanna says
Feel better Mavis! Yes, yes it does … God Bless and feel better!,
Nancy says
The pineapple coconut is my absolute flavor of Häagen-Dazs ice cream. Heck I even eat it when I don’t have a sore throat.
Anissa says
I hope you are feeling better, personally dairy doesn’t work to well for me when I have sinus/throat issues. I like icees from the gas station or the Edy’s fruit popsicles or even cheap otter pops.
Pineapple Coconut sounds like a winning flavor combination!
Linda says
Chocolate ice cream would be a medical expense for sure.
lucina says
Hope you get better soon. I had a friend who sang professionally. She never ate dairy before she sang. Said it created mucus. Perhaps ice cream is a comfort? If IC doesn’t work, the popsicles might work better.
