Okay, so seriously, when did tasteless tomatoes get so expensive? Cherry tomatoes for $6.65 a pound? What planet do we live on?
The HH says going shopping with me is like shopping with someone who’s just been let out of prison.
- How would he know?
- I know I don’t get out of the house much but…
- There is SO MUCH to look at!
- Shopping and just plain looking around is way more entertaining than anything on the telly.
I think I’m going to sell my extra tomatoes this summer for only $1 or $2 a basket just so someone can walk by and FREAK OUT and be all excited the price is so low.
Yes. Yes, I think that’s what I’m going to do.
Market Basket Shopping Trip $46.14
Someone was craving grilled weenies… And someone else was craving a Boston creme donut. 😉 Have you tried Firehook crackers?
They are delicious! Fact: Those avocados better be good ones. I’ve had so many duds lately from the grocery store. Another fact: I’ve never had a bad one from Trader Joe’s.
Costco $37.76
Last week Eliz mentioned how much her husband liked the cauliflower crust pizza from Costco so I had the HH pick one up while he was out.
I really liked all the vegetables on it. The HH not so much. He said he prefers his giant man crust pizzas. Whatever.
I’d get it again.
Also, I think this might be my last bag of Fuji apples until fall. There were 2 bad ones in the bag.
The cauliflower pizza from Costco. A winner in my book! They were 2 for $11.99.
Giant man crust pizza. {I didn’t try it.} It stunk up the house. 🙁
Weenies: Ketchup and sweet relish FOREVER!
Mediterranean Crunch salad with bacon and apples. Yum!
Mediterranean Crunch salad with rotisserie chicken, apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs and other stuff.
Loaded baked potato. Yes please!
Trader Joe’s Chicken teriyaki and rice. What a deal for only $5.99 a bag. Linner in 5 minutes, works for me!
So do pickety bits!
And last but not least, breakfast was business as usual around here this week. Steel cut oats with fruity bits.
Total Spent This Past Week On Groceries $83.90
Did you make anything good last week? Or maybe you just opened things? That’s okay too. 🙂

Grape tomatoes are still 1.99 at Aldi and Lidl here and roma tomatoes are .98#. Waiting on the guy we buy tomatoes from in the summer for $8 for 10 pounds.
Margo says
Tomatoes are not in season and many of ours come from Mexico. Tariffs are going to affect prices going forward. I’ve heard it said that tomatoes from the store taste like disappointment anyway. I’ve seen huge trucks hauling tomatoes from the field here in So. Cal in the summer. When you can pile a ton of tomatoes in the bed of these trucks and they arrive whole, maybe they’ve been bred for portability and not taste. I buy very few tomatoes out of season and can’t wait until my garden starts producing. Nothing like a homegrown one!

The last of the sauerkraut soup is in the fridge. Also, scalloped potatoes using the last of a block of cheese. Looking at your pics & noting the bag of 6 hot dog buns, 8 wieners. Why can’t the numbers match??

It’s a crazy!!

Fuji apples are my favorite, but my grocery stopped carrying them! I have found a substitute though and it’s “Evercrisp”. It is a cross between a Fuji and Honeycrisp. The taste is sweet and juicy and the size of apple is big!! Hope you can find it.
Amanda says
I LOVE Evercrisp apples! I agree about the sweet and juicy delectable taste. I eat at least one everyday and have been known to hide them from my family. 🙂
Ginger says
I agree with your husband, LOL.
The Sugar Bomb & Flavor Bomb tomatoes are worth every penny. They taste like you grew them in your own garden. They are definitely a big step above your average grape or cherry tomato from the grocery store.
Mel says
They’re the only ones our toddler will eat out of season. We spend $10 a week on them (as well as an insane amount on fresh fruit). I can’t wait for tomato season.
Sue R. says
Honestly, we don’t buy tomatoes during the winter. We eat all we want in season, make salsa and sauce to can or freeze and do without “fresh” any other time. The taste and price just aren’t worth it, in my opinion.
Emily says
I’m with Sue. I almost never buy a grocery store tomato. I’m always disappointed. Canned tomatoes, home-canned salsa, and tomato sauce are my tomato sources through the cold weather months.
Ashley Bananas says
Groceries are just so pricey lately…..I totally understand questioning how tomatoes, or anything are so pricey right now.
lafn says
Oh how I wish we had a Market Basket in Michigan. It is the best grocery store I have ever shopped…
My husband doesn’t understand current grocery pricing since he waits in the car while I shop. However, he does agree that Costco’s Detroit Style pizza is one of the best we’ve tried!
Nancy Frost says
Hahaha! Tasteless tomatoes got so expensive when we decided to buy them out of season, picked too early and bred for shipping instead of flavor. I’m in the “wait for summer and then indulge with abandon” school.
Sarah-Ann says
I travel for work and the best part of it during the summer is the roadside stands full of fresh veggies, flowers, breads and fruit. I always carry extra cash since I never know what stand ill run into. I get some amazing deals! It’s wonderful!
Mrs. C. says
You know those Costco pecans? I, too, picked some up a couple weeks ago. I realized that they used to be 3 pound bags, and now they are 2 pounds. ARGH!
Mavis Butterfield says
Really? I hadn’t even noticed! Wow, that is a big difference.
Vy in Seattle says
I made a pineapple upside down cake for a 70s dinner party and it turned out amazing. And so easy! Definitely going on my rotation.
Michele Cheney says
We love the fire hook crackers!!!!
Mavis how are your artichokes seedling doing? I’m trying for the first time and they are looking sad. Would love to see yours!
Zadu says
I’d come and buy your tomatoes if it didn’t involve a major transportation expense!
We bought some tomato plants at the grocery store last spring off the clearance rack, $5 each, and just put them in the basement (we have a walk-out) on a south-facing window ledge. I didn’t expect much but those plants are still giving us some of the best tomatoes I’ve ever had. So I feel your pain (and agree with you) about store-bought, flavorless tomatoes.
