I would like you to know we are now living in a world where a can of soda now has 9 grams of fiber in it.
Yesterday the HH were running a bunch of errands {stopping by Market Basket was one of them} when I noticed they were proudly selling SINGLE CANS of soda for $2.00 a piece.
What!? How can this be?
FACT: The HH hates shopping with me because:
1. I rarely go out
2. It’s like a whole new world when I do
Not only are people paying $2.00 for a can of soda these days, but apparently you can now buy soda with 9 grams of fiber in it! How wild is that!? Have you tried this soda? Is it any good?
Don’t people get their daily vitamins and fiber from food anymore? Did you know 1 avocado has 10 grams of fiber in it?
Wouldn’t you rather eat an avocado than drink a can of soda? I know I would.
I told the HH he needed a good pair of walking shoes for this summer because I have BIG PLANS. He bought a pair of Hoka shoes.
This was the first time in his life he has had a pair of athletic shoes like this. All that white on the bottom of the shoe… I don’t know.
He says the Hokas propel him forward a bit when he walks.
I don’t know though, they look kind of strange on him. And maybe a little too sporty. It’s hard to get used to him wearing them.
Walmart now has electronic price tags. When did this happen?
How often do they change the prices? Have you ever seen the price change as you were standing there? $5.18 for all that eyeshadow seemed like a good deal to me.
$7.97 for 1 tube of deodorant seemed a little high though.
And last but not least, Walmart also sells sequin fabric! Who knew? I wonder how many tube tops I could make out of 1 yard of fabric.
Well that’s all I’ve got. I hope you have a great weekend.
Maybe I’ll see you in the clubs. Maybe I won’t.

I tries the Olipop and could not finish it, it was awful tasting and had a weird chemical flavor I couldn’t identify despite he lengthy list of organic ingredients.
Hoka athletic shoes. I own a pair of these overpriced shoes and they collect dust, I hate the contour of the soles as they make me feel unstable and like I have rockers on my feet.
Deodorant. Yep, it got expensive and I am always cringing when I have to buy it for the family. I made a point of telling my kids they don’t need extra sticks of deodorant in their hockey bags or school backpacks because they would just loose them and it costs me a pretty penny to replace them.
Sequin fabric. I cannot imagine what you would make or use that for.

Which model Hoka do you have? I gave some to my mom and she had the same unstable feeling. She said the Stinson feel unstable for her, but the Bondi do not.

I tried a few of the probiotic sodas. I tried a few flavors of Olipop but it makes me have horrible stomach aches. It also has a weird taste to me.
I did try “Slice Soda” brand in the orange and lemon lime and those were decent and did not make me sick. Costco sold a box that was pretty cheap.
I bought them to try as a treat when I wanted a soda, but not all the sugar.
I would buy the citrus Slice again someday.
I like Brooks Adrenaline GTS sneakers in wide so my toes are free and they are perfect with plantar fascitis and other foot issues, plus they look normal.

$5.18 is NOT a bargain for those hideous eyeshadows. Unless you’re going out clubbing. Or clowning. ;^)

I’ve worn Hoka for years and they’ve been great for my feet, along with custom orthotics.
I guess it is a lot of white on the bottom, but I go for function, not looks and often find it hard to have both. I like HH’s new shoes. Enjoy the walking!

Mavis, it could be worse, he could’ve bought the ultimate dad shoe, the New Balance 608s. Finally broke my husband of them when he turned 60. 🙂
Mavis Butterfield says
Hilarious!

I guess I’m not a sweaty person, but one stick of deodorant lasts me a very long time. I buy it at Costco in a multipack, and on sale, so it’s cheap. I’m probably good until 2035 🙂
I’ve not seen those digital tags in my Walmart store yet, but I guess they’re coming soon. Not sure I like them though since the item description on the digital tag is pretty cryptic and difficult to decipher. I can see even in your photo that one of the deodorants does not match the item on the tag below it, so someone will be paying a different price than expected if they don’t check the tag below the item carefully.
KC says
I *definitely* don’t like the digital tags – there’s a general move towards “dynamic pricing” (aka assessing the customer and how desperate or flush-with-cash or unobservant *this* particular customer is right now) and I am 100% AGAINST IT. We should all be paying the same price for the same thing when it’s at the same store or online store! Not paying 3x the price because we’re buying children’s tylenol at 11pm at night, for instance.
I’m fine with restaurants or stores having “happy hour” or whatever where things are particularly discounted, or sales or coupons that are accessible to everyone, but using our data to figure out that we’re near the end of a road trip and are a mile away from our birthday niece’s house and therefore they can upcharge us on a lego set and some gift wrap: nope. Dynamic pricing on toilet paper because we’re also buying imodium and gatorade? NOPE.
(McDonald app prices change depending on your personal buying habits and *when they think your payday is* for instance. https://econlife.com/2025/01/mcdonalds-pricing-power/ – not a fan AT ALL. Discounts for all when people are buying at off-hours: sure; first-time customer coupons: okay. Fine-tuned algorithmic manipulation of pricing to scrape extra dollars – or even just pennies – out of people consistently and in a way you can’t fight back against: no.)

I looked up the ingredients of the soda. It has artificial colors and flavors, titanium oxide, and more mg of caffeine than a typical 8 oz cup of green tea. And the amount of fiber in it may make some people ill. No thanks. I can make my usual Luzianne decaf iced tea with a little Earl Grey and have a copycat Starbucks iced tea for a lot less money. I’ll eat a salad for fiber, thank you.

I once saw the price of gas go down on a big electronic sign after I’d made my purchase…was I irritated.
Carrie O says
So hear me out… the Olipop Grape is delicious. When I’m travelling and know I won’t be able to hit my fiber goals (such as at WDW), I try to pick up a couple to keep things moving.
For those of us also addicted to soda or other bubbling drinks, it is a low calorie alternative that you don’t feel horrible about drinking. You just have to find the flavor that you like and drink it cold (they’re terrible warm).

You are quite critical, Mavis.
But seriously you asked the HH to get good walking shoes and he did and now you don’t like that they have too much white at the bottom? Or that they look funny on him? Sometimes your blog reads like an ornery grandpa commiserating about how the world has gone to hell in a handbasket. I mean you also clearly appreciate beauty in nature, simple joys, and creating lovely things. I wonder if you are truly that critical or it’s just a fun writing style for you? I know some others get a kick out of it — It does make me much more aware of how often I am critical though so I love that!
Becky Johnson says
I have had the same thoughts! It often makes me cringe and say to myself, “Okay, Boomer.” But like you, it makes me catch myself when I find myself feeling judgy. But I enjoy reading for the craft and life updates.

Ease up, ladies! We love Mavis, and her blog! She hasn’t been married to him for 30 years for nuttin! You aren’t forced to read it!
Keep on Mavis!
Cheri says
I don’t even buy sneakers with white on the bottom. I know myself! One fast walk in the drizzle and they’ll get discolored. Although, it would be great to have shoes that propel me forward…
Elizabeth C Smith says
This one made me laugh out loud- I just love your commentary on prices, sneakers, plants, you name it, keep the Mavis comments coming! I’m personally all in for the New Balance 327s (have 3 pair!) and my husband loves his HOKAS but I agree… something is off about them- they look like clown shoes on him yet he is so happy wearing them so that’s a plus!!
Mary Kerns says
I am wearing my Hoka Bondis right now. My absolute favorites ever. And I love your style of writing. Hilarious!!

I haven’t seen those price tags at my local Walmart, but I wonder if they’re planning on doing what,Kroger intends to do with theirs. Change the price to reflect how well the item is selling or raising the price at certain times of the day.
Beryl Redfield says
I bought some the sparkly sequin fabric at Walmart to make a simple top to wear on a cruise. I haven’t worn it since then and never washed it. But it’s cute!
Mavis Butterfield says
That’s awesome! What color did you buy?
Lori Morgan says
You ask such great questions and it helps me remember that things are different all over this country. Digital price tags have been at our Walmarts here in the Dallas area for years. I am sure they save Walmart quite a bit of $$ and labor over time. Olipop is not my favorite, but I drink Poppi almost everyday. People swear by Hokas, but I’m going to stick to my Nike’s and ASICS. And $5 eyeshadow is a no!
Holley says
I know you bought some of that sequin fabric to make yourself an outfit to go to the club in!!! I hope you show us when you’re done! Have a great weekend!
