Did you know that Costco sells gold bars now? I had no idea until the HH and I popped in there last week to load up on more salad supplies.
What will they sell next?
Does anyone take collagen peptides? I don’t even know what they are and I’m pretty sure I don’t need them.
Is it just me or do you feel like you’re shopping in another country sometimes when you go down the aisles and you have no clue what the products are.
When did we suddenly need all these pills and potions and things nobody had heard of 10 years ago. Sometimes it makes me feel really old.
How long do you think it would take you to go through 198 Band-Aids?
Plinko!! I miss The Price Is Right {Bob Barker style}. Did you grow up watching that show? I loved it.
Sometimes I feel like I need to get out of the house more. Costco has new stuff every time I tag along with the HH on his grocery shopping trips.
Have you tried the croissant bread? Is it any good?
I think Dave’s Killer bread is still my favorite store bought bread. It toasts up so nicely.
Sweet potato sticks? I don’t know if those would be any good. But maybe.
$12.99 for a box of cereal. What in the world?
Costco Shopping Trip $96.09
In the end we just went home with the basics and a new pizza for the HH to try. Nothing too exciting, but still, the total was $96.09.
We didn’t want anything fancy last week. Mostly salads and yogurt.
I took a photo of all the stuff I added to one of our salads and WOW, it was a lot!!
Oh!! And I nearly forgot. We tried Oikos {nonfat} Greek yogurt and so far it’s my favorite of all the ones you have suggested.
It even beat out FAGE which we both thought was really good. I think adding a wee bit of jam is the key. Plain yogurt is boring… But jam makes everything taste better.
U-Pick Strawberry Farm $22.32
$4.50 a pound for u-pick berries. Expensive but totally worth it. You simply cannot beat REAL strawberries.
Or the world’s best strawberry shortcake recipe!
I also ate a bean bowl.
And the HH tried his new pizza {Motor City double pepperoni pizza} and said it was the BEST frozen pizza he has ever had. And that man has eaten a lot of pizza in his time.
He said it was crispy but light and made with quality ingredients. 🙂 Have you tried it?
Well, that’s all I’ve got for today. I hope you have a good one.

YES! I actually have something to add! lol We bought the Croissant bread the last time we were there.. $2.00 for the 2 loave pack- If it was nasty it becomes bird food or french toast right?
It is good.. VERY rich so not something we eat daily. We ate 1 loaf and froze the other.. Just pulled the second out of the freezer. Husband LOVED his egg, cheese and bacon sandwich he made. I love it toasted with butter and cinnamon sugar. I doesn’t hold it shape like a solid piece of wheat toast- definitely more like dessert!
Mavis Butterfield says
I bet it would be great for French toast!
Mary G says
I haven’t tried the Costco brand of croissant bread, but another brand of croissant bread sold locally here makes wonderful French toast. In fact, that’s about all we use it for.

I did a Costco trip this week on Thursday. They let us executive members in an hour early and it was still crowded, but not terrible. I checked out with 10 minutes to go before normal opening time and the crowd was thick and difficult to navigate through as they were crowding the entrance and front sidewalks with empty carts. So many people waiting to get in and they would barely move to let me out or get past. I know it is the first week of opening early, but they need to organize the crowd of regulars. An employee finally had to step in because none of them would budge so I could get out to the parking lot with my full cart. It was like their spot in line was sacred or something. The shopping inside was nice and pleasant and I just navigated through my list. I never deliberately wander in Costco and browse, but I feel I am forced to when I cannot find some of my usual items because they always rearrange stuff. I find they sell more and more processed junk and other junk. I have stopped buying certain products over the years because they have changed to cheapen them. For instance, their house strawberry jam has almost doubled in sugar in the past 15 or so years I was buying it. Since I have to look at added sugars and fat regularly on labels, I have noticed both of these increasing with many of their products. Vanilla extract and maple syrup have changed too.
They have been selling the gold bars for a year or two online, they sold out when they first were selling them. I know a few who have ‘invested’ in the bars, but I don’t think it is worth it. I’d rather toss the money onto my mortgage as I feel the equity in my housing market grows quicker than the gold market. I used to have gold and other precious metals in the stock market and it was never an outstanding performer and gains were minimal.
Mel says
I wish they’d add the gold bars to the free samples!

Funny Mel!

Sweet potato fries are so good (I do them in the air fryer) but never tried Costco brand. I’m with you I feel like I should stay home as I have no idea what so much of these peptides, collegen etc. are and what they are for. I got along okay so far all these years without them think I will keep going that way.

To compare, Magic Spoon is $8.47 at my NC Wal-Mart for a 7 oz box. Crazy.
For me, collagen peptides, whatever they do, are the new IT supplement. It reminds me of St. John’s Wort, Echinacea and Ginkgo Boloba. All of these were huge at one time, but not anymore. I do take a Collagen gummy because at 56, I need the joint help. I got a giant jar at Wal-Mart for $10 or so.
I saw a commercial where Panera has croissant sandwich bread and I’m glad to see it in a store. I would love to try it!
Mavis Butterfield says
Have you tried the cereal? I was wondering what it tasted like.
Jenny Smith says
My 11 yo son is diabetic. So, we have tried the magic spoon cereals. It has significantly less carbs/sugar and does not shoot his blood sugar up terribly. We’ve tried the fruit loop and chocolate versions. They don’t taste as great as the originals, but actually not too bad. Texture is a little crunchy/different anyway.
Jamie says
That pizza is a favorite of my son. Croissant bread makes amazing french toast & I just bought the band aids last week….. don’t have to worry about running out!! And yes, 12.99 for cereal is insane!!
Nicole says
Oikos Zero Greek yogurt are our favorite too. I would never buy plain unless it is a recipe ingredient. The flavored ones are zero sugar, low/moderate calories, and high in protein but you’ll have to buy as individual cups rather than a large tub. I like to top it with berries and sliced almonds. Next time you’re at Costco, look for the multi-flavored 18 count box. At your grocery store, try the coconut-vanilla variety sometime or Chobani Zero coconut-vanilla. It’s the bomb with berries and sliced almonds. Wish the Costco box included this flavor.
Adeline says
I agree with Mel, free samples of gold bars would be good publicity About the croissant bread : Inm french and I have no idea what it could be… Croissant is suppose to be made of puff pastry, rich in butter and shape in the form of a crescent. So that’s puzzling !
In another topic, I find the price of these cereals and the visual on the box disturbing…
Holley says
I want/NEED that Plinko game!

I started taking collagen a few years ago. The best way I can describe it is that it’s the “glue” that holds our bodies together, largely absent from our modern diet that doesn’t include the organs or skin of most of the meats we consume. Probably the most prevalent source of it these days is bone broth. You know how you often see elderly people who look like their skin is falling off? That’s a decline in collagen as we age. I was thrilled last year to find we can get it for free with Hubby’s quarterly Medicare credit – obviously we are older than you two 🙂 Another benefit of getting older lol. Vital Proteins brand also comes in vanilla flavor, which is delicious. I put it in Hubby’s afternoon matcha tea every day. You could stir some of the plain into your yogurt and never know it was there.
Katherine says
We used the Vital Protein Collagan Peptides for 18 months and could not see or feel any difference other than the price increased multiple times. We put it in our morning cup of coffee.
Rosemary says
Well darn, I can only buy 5 of the gold bars? Then, just forget it! Ha ha ha (a free sample would be nice . . .)

While doing some hiking with hills wouldnt hurt, I think you’ll be fine.
You are active, walking and biking. Unless you guys are doing the rim to rim or some other crazy long hike you’ll manage fine.
We usually do 2 three week long road tips a year to National Parks and do lots of hiking. I am living the busy mom life that currently means I’m not as active as I’d like and we rarely hike at home. I always do fine. My shins are usually sore the first big hike or two. And being from see level I can always feel the altitude effect me but there isn’t a lot to do for that and it just makes you pant a little harder at the top
We did Zion two years ago (along with the grand canyon and bryce). Just remember if you get 1/4-1/2 mile off the pavement the crowds diminish greatly.

Collagen user here … recent convert. Another blogger I follow has been raving about the results of using collagen peptides and I did some research on my own but was skeptical … then I found a reputable brand at a grocery bargain place and figured it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try since it was a nominal investment…I’m over 3 months in for taking it almost daily (I mix it into my morning tea and/or a smoothie or oatmeal) and I am now convinced it does help me! You have to really give it time, though, I didn’t actually start believing I was seeing/feeling results until I was about 8 weeks in. Now, I think I am 100% committed. It helps my hair/nails health but what it has really, really helped with is joint stiffness – I used to wake up and my hips & legs would be so stiff but as I’ve been taking the collagen supplement, the morning stiffness has definitely been reduced. I recommend it to anyone!

I view the croissant bread as an occasional indulgence. It seems a bit richer than brioche. It makes great French toast or grilled cheese. My favorite way to use it though is for making croque monsieur sandwiches, with a bit of green chile added to the bechamel. It is also great in bread pudding.
cat says
We are hooked on that pizza in our house. Stopped buying all other frozen pizza and just went with that. It’s so easy to add to it too and it doesn’t get all mushy and soggy either. We throw on mushrooms and sometimes extra cheese and still crisps up super nicely. Also on the plus side, I’m learning a new oven, so it still tastes great if it’s slightly under baked or over crispy.
Michelle says
We also just buy the basics , all of the pills and potions are insane . I’d be taking something a hundred times a day if I listened to commercials . Like you we moved from west coast to east FINALLY! Basic food that we make ourselves is the cheapest and most healthy.
Pauline in Upstate NY says
Big YES to Motor City’s Double Pepperoni – and Costco’s two-pack price is a good deal. I’ve seen MC pizza in other stores, typically about $9 for ONE. I also like Costco’s 4-pack of plain cheese pizza (frozen) – easy enough to fancy it up myself if I want to.
Ashley Bananas says
The collagen peptides or vital proteins can be a supplement for people trying to add more protein to their diet. I add more protein to hit my protein goals, this is common in people trying to lose weight or gain muscle to hit protein goals.
The croissant bread is great, I had it as a sample with jam once. Wouldn’t buy two loaves though. We don’t go through bread like that anymore.
The SO and DS16 both love the Detroit style pizza. We’ve gotten it a few times.
I find it funny you like to skip the grocery store, because when I first started reading your blog you were a couponer and at stores a lot to score deals. It’s funny how time can change things. Although I too find myself at stores less for coupon reasons. I used to go to CVS once a week for the one or two free items and then would do a CVS shop. But now I may go once a month for the CVS Extra Care Plus. It’s fun but a little gamey.
This week I have been focusing on us eating out leftovers, odds and ends, and eating down our cold items. We are about to go out of town for two weddings next week, and I dont see a point in buying a lot of items to sit there. We’re also in active hurricane season and if we were to lose power we would potentially lose a lot of our frozen and chilled items. Time to eat what we have!

We only have a Sam’s Club where we live. I wait to buy a yearly membership after the current one expires and whatever the required waiting period is. I bought one in April and have gone once since then to buy a rotisserie chicken. The nearest Costco is more than 50 miles away so I’ll never buy a membership there. Everyone has their own opinion about warehouse stores, and I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority.
NCJill says
I too take the Vital Proteins brand bc it’s “Bobby Approved” which I appreciate. (look him up…Flav City…you could learn A LOT!) Our collagen starts to decline in our 20’s, by about 1% each year. This is vital for skin, joints, and more. I put an unflavored scoop in my morning tea and my afternoon shakes. I notice a huge difference when I don’t take it, especially since I’m 60. IMO, you can’t go wrong with this excellent product.
Katy K says
The sweet potato sticks are just that, dried sweet potato. They are VERY chewy, and have a very intense sweet potato flavor. Probably not a bad snack, but we didn’t care for them. Our dog loved them!
Rj says
I agree…….very chewy. Maybe Lucy would like them!
Christy Rose says
I took the collagen powder stuff for over a year and felt it didn’t do anything for me BUT I add it to my two boxers food and they are super shiny now. So, if you have a dog that needs some sparkle add this magic powder to their food.
Patti says
The gold bars are for sale at Costco because someone is spreading rumors of an economic collapse – the thinking is you will invest in gold and not lose your money. Normally when you purchase gold bars, you have to pay a fee so that makes it much cheaper to buy at Costco. However, if the economy does collapse, it will probably be impossible to sell gold to anyone. If you buy it at today’s prices, you may find it sells for a cheaper price later when you decide to sell it and then you will have lost your “investment”. (That happened when folks were worried about Y2K). Stock your pantries, learn to garden and cook, mend your clothes, etc. and you will be much better off than playing the gold bar investment game.
Judy says
You loose collagen as you age. For me it helps with nails, hair ,joints and wrinkles. I have been taking it for a few years and I can feel and see the difference. That is a great price for Vital Proteins. Just stir it in your coffee….no taste
Lori says
I do take the collagen peptides daily. When I went thru menopause I started losing my elasticity in my skin. My doctor recomended it. Being diabetic I can’t take the gummies. Haven’t found any good tasting ones without sugar. The collagen peptide is a powder I mix with berries, kale or PB2 (powder peanut butter) to make a smoothie in the morning. Sometimes I mix it with a chocolate protein powder and add instant expresso powder. It gives me the caffeine kick I need because I don’t drink coffee. Let me know when those gold bars hit the free samples, I’d love one also.
Sharon L Thompson says
Motor City frozen pizza is, hands down, the best frozen pizza!
Amber says
I use the collagen picture. I just add it to my morning coffee. I started to use it to help with some hair issues, and noticed when I stopped that my hair, skin, and nails all took a blow. I don’t use any of the flavored ones, but this has been a daily staple for a few years now.
Those bandaids do not last long in my house – the teenager is a bit clumsy at times haha.
And, that pizza is so good! The breadsticks are too, assuming Costco still carries them. We get one of each whenever we go to Costco (which isn’t often enough).
Jennifer says
I put a scoop of collagen peptides in my hot tea. It is supposed to help with joints. I have back problems so will try anything. I do think it helps my joints move smoother
Lynne H says
I use the Collagen Peptides every morning in my coffee. Dermatologist was happy I was using it. I have had bursitis in my left hip for many years, and although the pain hasn’t disappeared, it isn’t as severe as it was. And my rosacea doesn’t seem to flare as often, too. I use the kind with probiotics, cuz that surely could help my gut issues.

Costco for us is a special journey usually on the way to our sons in London about120 . My darling husband calls it the 200 club! We never come away without spending £200. Like you I only buy what I’m used to, standard pantry stuff, and yes they have been selling the gold bars here in UK too. Along with a lot of other things I neither want nor need. Find some things hilarious! I’m very glad to be able to stock up occasionally though and will welcome the one they are building this year in our nearest city about 30 miles away. Woohoo!
