The other day I visited Neal’s Yard Dairy in their Borough Market location for the second time in two years. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!
Oh how I wish we had something like this in the states. There would be a line out the door! Can you imagine walking down the street and seeing wheels of cheese propped up right outside the door?
It would stop people in their tracks. I wonder how many people {if any} have ever walked by and on a whim decided to buy an entire wheel of cheese?
Maybe I should have asked.
I think it’s been well documented here on the blog that I love my pickety bits. Cheese and crackers included.
And while I might not be as crazy for cheese as my friend JJ, I do love a good aged cheddar, soft brie and especially goat cheese.
My main mission for my visit to Borough Market and Neal’s Yard Dairy was to bring back a few different cheeses, crackers, chutney and some fresh fruits and vegetables for a nice linner at the table in our hotel room.
And man oh man was it hard to choose!! If the HH was with me we would have bought a nice hunk of stinky blue cheese.
He’s so much more adventurous when it comes to trying new foods than I am. Especially cheese!
In the end I purchased a little round of the soft and creamy St Cere.
According to Neal’s Yard Dairy St. Cere is “a small but intense washed-rind cow’s milk cheese . Expect pungent, farmyardy flavours and a melting centre that may require a spoon.”
{YES, I needed a spoon!}. 😉
And a nice wedge of Stichelton for my mother {which she thought was fantastic!}. Ripe and somewhat stinky and a perfect pairing with fruit and crackers.
Cheese, glorious cheese! I love it here. I can’t believe I have to go home soon.

My husband and I stumbled upon Neal’s Yard Dairy in 1994 on a Thanksgiving week trip to the UK. Have dreamed about it ever since. So much cheese in such a tiny place! Heavenly!

I bought a wheel of cheese once just to cross that off my bucket list. I think it cost about $90. It was a nice seasoned hard white cheese. I split it with some family members and froze chunks. When you think about it, every time you buy Brie, it’s a wheel of cheese.

I love following your travels Mavis. I am writing down your suggestions for a future trip to the UK!! Tomorrow is a Costco day so I will be buying a cheese or two for pickity bit lunches…yum!

I always bought cheese in the UK and brought it back to the states..wax covered or packaged. Not sure why that was banned.. now there’s a hefty fine. Enjoy it while you can!

You’re lucky it wasn’t INTO London, versus OUT OF London, cheese-wise.
We were told quite firmly at the Amsterdam airport (which features all sorts of wonderful Gouda in its shops) that England would not allow cheese or meats in — no matter what. Since we’d had this happen regarding smoked/preserved meat from Mexico to the US (it was meant for our adopted son’s favorite tapas) — I figured meats.
But cheese??? (Welcome home.)

That place looks incredible. I can just imagine you and your Mom snacking away on all those cheeses.
It was interesting to see how this differed for you with your Mom along for the trip. Sorry if you mentioned it elsewhere – but did she enjoy her vacation?
