On the second day of our trip we hiked in Bryce Canyon.
I don’t know if it was because my legs were sore from the day before or what but man oh man that hike was physically demanding.
Jen and I both agreed a marathon would have been easier. I think we gained about 2,200 feet in elevation on that hike too so that might have had something to do with it.
The temperature was nice, but it was super windy during most of the hike and by the end of the day it didn’t matter how much lotion I applied to my face it still wasn’t enough. My face wanted MORE.
In hindsight I should have just rolled a tube of Chapstick all over my face to protect it. Oh well, lesson learned.
My strategy for that hike was to stay as close to the front as possible.
I figured that when we did take a few minutes to catch our breath, I’d get an extra minute or two while we were waiting for everyone to come back together as a group. It seemed to work.
The rock towers {hoodoos} were pretty spectacular. It felt like we were on a movie set.
If you ever get the chance to go to Bryce Canyon, DO IT. You’ll be so glad you did. And don’t forget the trekking poles!
After a long day hiking in the canyon, we headed to our campground to set up our tents in the dirt. But that was another story all together. 🙂
On day 2 of our hike we walked 20,340 steps. Mostly uphill!!

How did your feet do with the shoes you wore? Did they provide enough support?
Mavis Butterfield says
The Altra shoes I wore were great. No problems at all. Both guides wore Altra trail shoes as well which I thought was interesting.
Marcia says
I bought Altras for my hiking trip to Moab, and they are the best.

Flights climbed = 1??. So at least 100? Wow. And I’m going to have to search for that white headgear that person is wearing as it looks nice and airy but with lots of sun protection.

I know you had posted before about your shoes, but which Altra’s are they?
The park looks beautiful!!

Wow! The scenery is beautiful and I am so impressed and maybe jealous of your hiking. I spent the weekend walking around Quebec city and my hip has been killing me since I got back!

Wow! Just Wow! Phenomenal photos – what did you use to take them?

Oh wow! These photos are gorgeous!
I love the Vaseline All-Over Body Balm Stick in unscented for super windy hikes. My only complaint is that it’s Vaseline, so you have to be SUPER careful to put sunscreen on underneath and let it fully dry. It kept my skin completely free from windburn after an 8 hour day of cross country skiing in January in Upstate NY and doesn’t feel overly greasy on my skin like some other products might. I’ve also used the Dermatone Skin Protector Creme with the built in SPF 30, but it has lanolin in it so it doesn’t work for me sadly. I doubt you have a lanolin allergy given your wool handling, so that may be a better option for you!

Bryce is for sure my favorite. Here’s the thing about being in the front, from someone who is near the back – if you wait until everyone catches up and then immediately start off again (or within a few minutes), my friend refers to that as an “eff you” stop. Meaning: it’s not very nice for the people in the back, because they don’t get a break. On my trip to Utah a week ago, I made sure to wait for her and wait until she was ready to go again.
Linda Sand says
I used to hike with three tall people but I am short. I never got a decent break since they were rested by the time I caught up with them. Please, have mercy on the short people.

Bryce Canyon is killer on the hills. While it doesn’t seem to effect my husband as much, i have always noticed high elevation and then hiking uphill at high elevation is just killer.
We always get wind chapped in Utah. Get a thick balm type lotion. I think the one we have might be bees wax based.

My husband and I did Bryce Canyon and Zion years ago it’s truly an amazing place so glad you did it while you are still young enough to handle those hikes!! Your pictures brought back memories!!
What a great experience!
