Okay, so I have one last story to share about my hiking adventure with Jen.
Here we go.
On our third {and last} night at the campground the forecast was calling for overnight temps of 38 degrees.
Jen and I had slept outside, in a tent, on the dirt the previous two nights. To put it mildly, it was hard to sleep. Maybe I’d get an hour of sleep before waking up to the sound of someone opening their tent zipper.
Or breathing. Or a coyote howling. Or someone coughing…
Eventually I’d fall back to sleep but only to be awakened 45 minutes to an hour later.
Anyway, long story short, after our hike on the last day we headed over to the shower house.
And as I stood in the shower room {which by the way was really nice and SUPER clean} it occurred to me that not only does the door lock from the inside, but the room was well insulated too.
Insulated from noise. Insulated from the cold. INSULATED.
Hey now… I bet I could sleep in here!
So after everyone had showered and was getting into their tents for the night I told Jen I was going to sleep in one of the shower rooms and started to haul my sleeping gear over there.
She basically thought I was nuts and well, let’s just say that one of us slept soundly that night in a nice WARM private suite and the other one slept in a cold tent.
And YES, I wiped down the entire shower before setting up my bed. With Jen’s towel. HA HA HA. {It was the last day, what did it matter}.
The next morning as I was packing up my stuff Jen knocked on the door. She wanted to come inside and GET WARM.
I made tea and we sat on the bench in my private suite and had a good laugh.
Tent life. Some of us are better at it than others. Or maybe some of us are just more resourceful and think outside of the box? I don’t know.
I had a blast though and I can’t wait to do it again {hopefully next summer}. Tent or shower stall, I’m game.
I’m curious though. Under those conditions {cold, coyotes, dirt} would you be on Team Jen {tent} or team Mavis {shower}?
I’ve got to know.
~Mavis
P.S. I have a feeling there’s going to be more people on Jen’s team than mine. 😉

First of all, I wouldn’t be there. I am not a “campy” sort of girl. My fantasy self is but the real me doesn’t like bugs. So, with that in mind. It would definitely be team MAVIS! Wow, great thinking out of the box!!

lol!!! I don’t like to be cold. So I vote team Mavis!!! Sometimes you got to do what you got to do!!!

The eagle scout in me says tent all the way. Plus I love to sleep in the cold. I had my bedroom window open about 5 inches last night in 34 degree weather. The light sleeper in me along with these 45 year old knees and back say that shower stall looks pretty comfy though.

I might choose the warm, quiet shower stall if the rest of the group was very close by. I wouldn’t want to be all alone; that would give me the creeps!
Erin says
Team Mavis all the way. Brilliant.
Kath says
Team Mavis all the way! I’d love the hiking and camaraderie during the day, BUT for sleep I’d be locked in that shower room too!
Lesley says
I like the way you think! I sort of wonder if those shower tiles might be harder than the ground outside though!
Mavis Butterfield says
I used a sleeping pad {both in the tent and shower} so they were basically the same.
Kelly-Jo says
Team Jen. I also sleep better when the environment around me is cold.

Team Mavis
Teresa M says
Team Mavis for the win!

Team Mavis. I can camp when it’s down in the 40’s but lower than that. Plus, all those sounds. No thanks!

Tent camping I never get as good of sleep. But we have stayed in a LOT of campgrounds over the years. We now have a truck camper (the shower is so tiny, we still use campground showers). Last year i think we were camped over 70 nights (often dry camping not at a campground but in the middle of the forest). I have yet to see a shower stall that I would sleep in…that must have been some nice campground to have a shower clean enough that you would consider sleeping in it…even after wiping it down
I often question the choices they make for shower building materials because of how gross they often get. I know they are used non stop and I am sure the park staff hate cleaning them…so why don’t they build them all out of concrete so they can just power wash them. Luke those tiles look so nice…but after a few summers of heavy use are they still going to look that nice? Who’s going to scrub all that grout?

I’m 100% Team Mavis! After 2 days of no sleep and dirt I would’ve had enough.

While the shower stall amenities would tempt me, the lack of ambient light and the feeling of being closed in would drive me to the tent. In my younger years I had a difficult time when spelunking due to claustrophobia. Not severe but still a bit challenging.

You had me at coyote! . Team Mavis all the way.

As weird as is sounds to sleep in the shower room, I think I would have to be team Mavis on this one. I don’t like tent camping much.

I’m team BOFA. BOFA you two were nuts to go camping in the first place. LOL!
I detest camping. My first experience was a tent sleepover in a friend’s yard. At 4am, after a night of weird noises, damp ground, shivering, and no sleep, I got up, grabbed my sleeping bag, and walked home (only 4 houses away, so no big deal). NEVER AGAIN.
I like hiking. But I require a hot shower and a cozy warm bed after a day of it.
