It’s been a few weeks since I did a grocery update and the reason for that is other than buying milk at the local store, things were pretty slow around here in the shopping department.
We’ve basically been eating the same things we always do and well, there’s nothing exciting about that.
Oats and toast for breakfast.
And no, that toast is NOT burnt. Thank you very much. 😉
The HH and I have very distinct views on how to toast bread. My method hovers around the question of whether the smoke detector is going to go off, or not.
It makes him CRAZY.
Have you tried the Beecher’s Mac and Cheese from Costco?
It’s fantastic! We picked one up a few weeks ago, I don’t remember the price, maybe $12.99? It’s totally worth it in my opinion.
I’ve been to the Beecher’s Cheese Shop in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, Bell Square and Seatac airport and every place I’ve had their mac and cheese it’s been really, really good.
Costco $91.43
I broke my cardinal rule of not venturing out right before a major holiday {way too many people!} and not only stopped by Costco, but Trader Joe’s too. What was I thinking!?
Oh well, at least we arrived at both places just as they opened so the stores weren’t too packed yet.
We had bought a big bag of pecans on our last Costco shopping trip and somehow forgot. Now we have a six month supply.
At least we got to load up on salad things, fresh fruits, veggies and cheese. Glorious cheese.
I think the plan for Christmas is a ham… And then pickety bits all the way until the bell drops on New Year’s Eve. Fact: we’ll be asleep when that happens.
I love making GIANT salads.
Seriously, where else can you get your daily allowance of fruits and vegetables in one sitting?
Nowhere. That’s where.
Bacon, chicken and avocado {plus all the other stuff} is probably my favorite “big salad” combination. What’s yours?
Trader Joe’s $117.71 + Local Store $18.37
I love Trader Joe’s. Especially their dried fruit and nut section. The packages are just the right size for two people.
So are most of their freezer meals.
I bought the dried fruity bits for scones and stollen {I plan on making a batch this week} and the smoked salmon for homemade smoked salad spread {for New Year’s Eve}.
We also picked up a bunch of cheese, including some fondue. I’ve never tried Trader Joe’s fondue before… Have you? Is it any good?
Fact: The blueberries from Peru were no bueno. They didn’t taste great last time either. I have no idea why I bought them.
I don’t think I’ll be buying blueberries until next summer.
Things have been going well in the meal department lately.
I’ve been stuffing my face with cookies and chocolates and extra portions every chance I get because HELLO… It’s officially winter. Time to fatten up.
Those of us in cooler climates could all use a little extra insulation this time of year anyway,
That’s my working theory anyway.
Have you bought {or been gifted} any amazing foodstuffs lately? Curious minds want to know.
Have a great monday everyone,
~Mavis

Gosh each and every dish looks so darn good. We have been having extremely cold weather last few weeks and I am over it already. Lots of soups for us last few weeks. Yesterday not feeling that well but thought need to clean out the big food closet so I did the 7 cans of Taco Soup. It is always a hit and got rid of some more stuff in that closet.
Cindy Brick says
How about yak meat?
The Brick went to a friend’s house for a Convention of the States meeting — and the guy was offering people yak from his overstuffed freezer. The Brick snagged some.
We’ve had the brisket…and all I can say is that, in spite of hours of cooking, it’s kinda chewy. But not bad. Almost like a very lean beef.
I also bought a tin of baby eels to use for our annual Seven Fish Dishes celebration.

We had some of these on crusty bread in Madrid, Spain, where we went in July. It was incredibly good brushed with olive oil.
Merry Christmas to you, Mavis. So good to keep hearing what you’re up to.

I don’t think Peru or Chile’s blueberries will be good until another month into their season. I was disappointed too.
Dianne Labadie says
Yeah, I got pulled into the Peru blueberries 2 weeks in a row. I have some frozen in the freezer. That will be it when those are gone.

This is the time for comfort foods: lentil soup, spaghetti with olive oil, garlic and parmesan cheese, and red beans and rice. All made from the pantry; all warm and filling.

I love the little white dishes on your charcuterie board. Do you remember where you got them?
Mavis Butterfield says
They are just mini sauce dishes. I found them at a local kitchen shop. Crate and Barrel sells them online though.

In reading the posts on your grocery hauls, I see you buy a quantity of avocados at one time. I just bought a bag of Trader Joe’s mini avocados and I’m the only one who eats them in this house. Short of eating one at almost every meal, can you enlighten me on how you keep your avocados longer term than a few days? Thanks.
