Yesterday I started my THIRD flat of seedlings!
So far I’ve planted a flat of lavender, a flat of chives and now a flat of “onions”.
Well, technically leeks, yellow onions and scallions. 24 pods of each. Fingers crossed that will be enough.
I think it will. Once they get established I’ll be able to carefully pull the seedlings apart when it comes time to plant them in the ground so I should have plenty.
I LOVE leeks! Plus I’ve always thought they look cool growing in a vegetable patch.
And if I have extra I’ll be able to sell them on my little garden cart and get way more for a leek than I would for an onion, so that’s a bonus.
If you’ve never grown leeks or onions before they are SUPER easy to grow.
I wrote a tutorial HERE but basically cover them with ¼ soil, keep them moist, give them light and be patient! They are SLOW to get going.
You really have to be in it for the long haul. Ha!
My chives are up! Chives are another plant that take a while to get going. But once they do, watch out!
Once established chives are one of the first things up in the spring, and if you keep cutting them back, they’ll last until the first frost.
Plus, the bees LOVE them. I’ve grown chives at every house we’ve ever had and they look magical when planted in rows.
Especially when they’re in bloom and all the purple flower heads are in their glory.
My flat of English lavender is coming along too. Buying English lavender at the nursery is expensive so I am thrilled that these are doing so well.
Who wants to spend $7.99 on one lavender plant when you can start 72 plants at home for the same price?
My current grow light set up.
In other news… The snow isn’t going anywhere… Anytime soon.
I hope the boxwoods survive. We wrapped them with burlap to protect them from the elements back in early December but now I’m thinking we should have built some sort of frames around them.
I guess we won’t know until the snow melts.
Or until the HH can get out there and move the snow.
My poor buoys!! 🙁
He dug out in front of the hearts on the studio fence yesterday. What a job that was!
Every time it snows the plows toss the snow onto the sidewalk and then the sidewalk clearing machine throws the snow towards the fence.
It sure makes life exciting around here, that’s for sure.
It’s hard to imagine that we’ll be outside working in the yard in about 7-8 weeks. I do love it here though.
I LOVE that we get all of the seasons here in Maine. There’s never a dull moment, that’s for sure.
I hope you have a wonderful day,
~Mavis
