Recently I’ve had a few requests from One Hundred Dollars a Month readers who are headed to Maine this summer and are looking for my top picks for places to see, things to do and bites to eat specifically between Portland and Camden.
So today I’m sharing some of the places we’ve discovered over the past few years that we’ve really enjoyed.
I’m hoping if you’re a local, or you’ve been to Maine and you have a favorite spot between Portland and Camden that you’d like to share, you’ll let everyone know in the comment section below.
Because sharing is caring, right? Unless of course you’re in front of me in line at one of my favorite bakeries and you buy the last pear frangipane tart.
Then I’ll be wishing I never told you. 😉
Here we go!
Portland
Portland Head Light – It’s a big attraction and everybody seems to like it. Myself included. Get there early if you want to miss the crowds.
Best Tacos – Bird & Co.
Best Bakery – Standard Baking Company {I think I’ve tried everything there!} 10/10!
Best Diner – Becky’s Dinner {if you get there early you can order a fruit bowl!} 😉
Bath
Maine Maritime Museum {Lot’s of cool stuff to see}
Solo Pane e Pasticceria – Excellent pastries, bread and cookies!
Now You’re Cooking – Cool kitchen store
Halcyon Yarn – Oodles and oodles of yarn!
Boothbay
Bet’s Fish Fry – Get there at 11 am when they open! {They sell 2 things: Haddock and French fries}. If you go on a Thursday the Farmer’s Market will be set up across the field.
Best Public Restrooms in Maine – The Village Public Restrooms in Boothway!! 10/10 {A few doors down from Bet’s.}
Boothbay Botanical Garden – It’s wonderful, anytime of year.
Damariscotta
King Fisher and The Queen – A fun unique shop with a mix of new and vintage products. You’ll love it!
Best Pizza in Maine – Oysterhead Pizza
Lincoln Theater – An inexpensive {totally old school} movie theater that always seems to have something interesting to see.
Pemaquid Point Lighthouse {Technically in Bristol, a small detour, but worth it!}
Rockland
Cheap Weenies – Wasses Hot Dogs {Get the chili cheese dog!}
Rockland Breakwater – This is a must. Bring a coat if it’s even remotely windy.
Rockland Farmer’s Market {Thursdays – Stop by the Brazen Bakery stall, the double chocolate rye cookies are my favorite.
Island Institute’s Archipelago gift shop and the Arctic Turn Bookstore are my favorite shops in downtown Rockland.
Renny’s is also a fun {old school} shop to pop into.
The Farnsworth Museum is a must! If you are a Jamie, Andrew, or N.C. Wyeth fan, don’t miss the Wyeth Center across the street.
Camden
If you are in town on a Saturday, you’re first stop needs to be Rose Cottage Bakery!!
Camden has a very busy but charming downtown scene.
There are a bunch of fun shops {some touristy, some not} and it can get super crowded {and parking can be tricky} in the summer months so it’s best to get there when the shops open.
The Owl and Turtle Bookshop and Cafe, Swans Island Company, Hearth and Harrow and Stonewall Kitchen are some favorites that come to mind.
The Camden Public Library is probably my all time favorite small library. Not only is it BEAUTIFUL, but there are public bathrooms downstairs. 😉 There’s also a great area to picnic at the back of the property too.
And if you are the athletic sort, hike {or drive} up to the top of Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park. If you hike, bring water! Trust me, you’ll need it.
So there you have it, those are my suggestions for stops between Portland and Camden, Maine.
