A big thanks to Deb and Tina for their suggestions to steep apple peels to make a nice, flavorful herbal tea.
Apple peel tea wasn’t something I had ever tried before, but once I read their comments I knew it was going to be a hit.
After all, I love mulling cider {apple cider + spices = awesomeness} so I figured that even if I didn’t have any cinnamon or cloves to add to the tea, the peels would be flavorful enough.
And they were!!
It’s funny, sometimes you can have all the ingredients you need right sitting in front of you, but unless you have a “recipe” you’re kind of clueless.
Even something as simple as pouring hot water over fruit peels!
And so now I know. 🙂
Thank you Deb and Tina! I won’t look at apple peels again as a waste product or something to toss on the compost pile.
Making apple peel tea is pretty straightforward.
Simply peel an apple and steep the peels in hot water for a few minutes. Remove the peels and you’re good to go.
You can add a wee bit of cinnamon to your tea if you like, but I found the tea to be plenty flavorful without it. I didn’t even need to add sugar to mine!
Also, be sure to use an apple variety that is sweet.
If you use a Granny Smith or other type of tart apple, you’ll end up with a tea that is tart as well.
Looking at your food in different ways and getting the most out of your grocery budget is kind of fun once you slow down and really start to examine everything you bring home from the store.
Apple peel tea!? Who knew?

Jacques Pepin knew. Virtually every time he peeled an apple on one of his many shows, he mentioned his grandmother making a tea out of apple peels because it was good for your kidneys.

I can’t wait to try it. I live in “apple country” in the mountains of North Carolina. I always have apples. One of the apple barns stays open year round. My husband is headed there today. We buy apples for ourselves as well as “deer” apples. There apples are better than the grocery store.

I dried orange peels this year, then pulverized them in the blender. I steep the powder. Mighty fine “orange tea”!
