I have been making these cookies ever since my friend Jane told me about them a few years ago. The recipe comes from Martha Stewart’s Cookie Book and I typically bake a double batch of these delicious cookies when my kids request them for their sporting events or if I’m asked to bake cookies for a bake sale.
The are seriously the best chocolate cookies I have ever tasted, and, there are never any leftovers. The only thing I’ve changed from Martha’s original recipe is I have added a touch of cinnamon and reduced the baking temp a bit for a chewier cookie.
Bake Sale Recipes – Chocolate Brownie Cookies
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups unsalted butter
2 cups sugar + 1/4 cup for rolling cookie balls into
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees
- Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt in a bowl and set aside.
- Beat the butter, 2 cups sugar, vanilla and eggs until light and fluffy {I use a KitchenAid mixer for this}
- Slowly add dry ingredients, and mix well. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for one hour until the cookie dough is somewhat firm.
- Line baking sheets with parchment paper or with a silpat baking mat. Use a 1 tablespoon cookie dough scoop to form dough balls and then roll the balls in sugar. Bake 10 -12 minutes .
- Cool on a wire rack. Hide a few for yourself and then serve a big plate full to your kids with a tall glass of milk to wash them down.

So my two daughters did all the mixing of the cookies and I just had to do the part of putting them in and taking them out of the oven. My 11 year old asked her dad if he was going to eat any of the cookies. He said he was going to eat 17 of them. She said, you can…because we made a double batch!

I mixed and rolled them. I made the HH make them. Humidity was very high this afternoon. He had to bake them for 16 minutes, and they came our very flat. They were, however, delicious!! TFS the recipe!!

Mine have come out flat before {Seattle, lot’s of rain} 😉 I whipped the butter and sugar for about 2 minutes together, I wonder if that made a difference in their puffyness factor? Anywho, these cookies rock. 🙂 And hello, way to go on getting you hubby to make them.

What I mean is, do you put cinnamon IN the dough or does it get rolled on the outside with the sugar?

I just tried this recipe for a bake sale and they turned out flat and greasy. Not sure where I went wrong as they look so good in the picture.

Hmmm. Kimberly, sometimes flat cookies happen to me when I bake sugar cookies, and when that happens I add a wee bit for flour and chill the dough first. I’m sorry that happened. I love this recipe.

You put cinnamon in the ingredients but left it out of the directions! May want to edit. Can’t wait to try them!

I followed the directions to the letter and they came out flat and greasy what causes this? But they are still tasty.

My guess is that your butter was too soft. Flat cookies are usually a result of super soft butter.
