bits and bobs: A random assortment of things; small remaining pieces and things
Have you tried Jobe’s fertilizer spikes? We planted a bunch of arborvitae trees this spring and the fence guy recommended them.
He said both he and his neighbor both planted the same sized arborvitae trees at the same time. The neighbor used Jobe’s spikes and he didn’t and well, the neighbors trees are HUGE now compared to his.
We grabbed a few packs a few months ago but forgot to use them. I wonder if it’s too late in the season to use them now. Maybe we should wait until spring? Anyone know for sure?
Glue guns now cost $30.
And the bean counters at Crest decided they could save a few pennies on multipacks of toothpaste by just throwing tubes of toothpaste into box rather than putting them into individual boxes {which of course make storing them easier.
Grumble grumble.
Ever wonder what it would have been like for a group of young women to share a flat in London in the mid 60’s? We came across this gem the other day and I thought it was pretty interesting.
The tiny kitchen though, might just be the best part. Well that, and one of the girls using the phrase “crabby old trout”. I had to google it. But ya, it’s what you think it is.
Jasper Hill Farm Willoughby cheese. We’re addicted!! We spotted it at Costco last month, tried it and went back for more.
Luckily we found a few other types of Jasper Hill Farm cheese at Market Basket and have tried those too. They are all FANTASTIC!!! Have you tried it?
Do you have a favorite type or brand of cheese? Dubliner cheese still holds the #1 position for us, but these Jasper Hill Farm cheeses have been a nice treat.
Well that’s all I’ve got for today. Have a good one.

I think I would wait till the spring for the Jobe spikes but they are good that’s for sure maybe you could google it and see if they have any info on it. Cheese? Oh my I could live on cheese. Not sure if you have a Trader Joes in your area or not but the St. Andres cheese (I think it is a French Brie) it is to die for I close my eyes to what it costs and just dig in. Just amazing. When we lived in our beach house we used to drive 2 hr. to come and get it then 2 hrs. home and we stocked up. Have to agree Dubliner cheese is so darn good. Come to think of it never met a cheese I didn’t like except of course American cheese you can keep that.

Yes, you can feed evergreens now, but I’ve had more success putting at least two spikes around each tree. Deciduous trees are typically fed in November and then again no later than June.
I love that Willoughby cheese!
Mavis Butterfield says
Thank you Mrs. C!! We will do two spikes per tree.
Mrs. S says
Arborvitae are evergreen trees. Would you feed them the same as deciduous trees?
MRs. C. says
There are a lot of factors that go into fertilizing a location: soil, health of plant, whether it’s a new planting? Generally, the difference in timing between evergreens and deciduous trees re: fertilizing is not as great as some people think. For healthy established evergreens, I would fertilize in March or April. However, Mavis’ location is coastal Maine and it looks like she’s basically rehabbing a lot of her garden space. If I recall correctly, one arborvitae may have died, but I don’t remember for sure. At any rate, while I would not fertilize anything deciduous at this point until the leaves drop (November where I am), I would give evergreens a light feeding. The spikes break down slowly, and they would provide light feeding.

I laughed out loud at the four girls and the 4 guineas share of rent my sister was a secretary then and earned about 10 guineas a week. She got married in 1968. So gave up the single life but it really took me back. My parents used to think it was all a bit racy single women living alone in a city! I was 13 years behind her things had changed hugely by the time I went out to work. Excellent thank you 🙂

We lived in Vermont for 20 years & Jasper Hill Harbison is the best! Their blue cheese is wonderful also. Now that we live in Florida, we will mail-order or stock up when we go back each summer for a 2 week vacation.

Lol. The Costco Crest toothpaste keeps going downhill. It used to have 6 long lasting tubes in individual boxes all wrapped in plastic, then they went to 6 shorter tubes in individual boxes all wrapped in plastic, then they went to 5 short tubes in individual boxes all wrapped in plastic, and now the have 5 shorter tubes all haphazardly thrown into a box and they changed the caps. They were twist caps and now they are flip caps, the ounce size is smaller too. No consistency other than the price for less product. I’m not sure I’m going to continue buying toothpaste at Costco. I’ve dropped so many of my usual products over the years because the quality and quantity goes down.
Mavis Butterfield says
The HH noticed the caps too!!

Fertilize in the spring before new growth begins.
