The oak trees are dropping acorns by the bucketload lately and I can’t seem to walk by them like a normal person.
Everytime we go on a walk and I pass by some nice looking ones, I have to pick them up and bring them home for Chippy. Chippy the chipmunk lives in our backyard and most days he’s camped out under the hydrangea bush which is below the bird feeders.
He patiently waits for the birds to fling the sunflower seeds to him and then fills his cheeks and runs away.
Lately though, I’ve been leaving him acorns by the entrance to his favorite tunnel. I can’t help myself.
He’s SO stinkin’ cute.
It started so innocently, with just one acorn. Then two, then a handful!!!
I watch from behind the window as he pops the acorn caps off and bites into the acorn meat.
When he’s had enough to eat, he’ll then pop capless acorns into his mouth and escape down the tunnel to {I presume} bury them somewhere {for winter?}.
It’s all very exciting and makes me wonder why on earth people pay good money to watch the nature channel when all they need to do is leave a little snack out for a critter or two.
Winter is coming!! And at this rate, Chippy’s pantry will be well stocked!
That’s it. That’s all I’ve got for today. Have a good one.

We have a very large tree trunk stump that we use as a “table” for treats for the backyard creatures – squirrels, cardinals, bluejays, doves, crows, woodpeckers and some very tiny birds that I can’t identify. The squirrels are messy and some of the treats fall on the ground – then the rabbits come by and clean up. It truly is like watching the nature channel.
PS: And there have been times when squirrels and birds are eating off the “table” at the same time . . . sharing a meal together . . .

I have squirrels who sit on the back of our deck chairs and stare at me through the kitchen window until I throw out some bread or fruit.

Do not encourage this little bugger!! In spite of three dogs living at our house, the chipmunks decimate my garden beds, whenever they can get away with it. They run up the pole and help themselves to the bird feeders. (I had temporary success spraying the poles with oil — and it was very funny, for a while, watching them slide back down. But that was temporary.)
They are horrible out here, especially for people with greenhouses, where they luxuriate all winter.
You will regret this. He will invite his friends, and your beautiful garden will pay for it.

love them, but they are scampy little Chip and Dales!
ours dug extensive tunnels under the brickwork which then collapsed.
They’ve since moved over to another part of the yard thank goodness

We have a large front porch that the criters use as a highway at night. I have no idea where they are going but we installed cameras to watch them. Raccoons, skunks, cats and squirrels. So entertaining.
Our neighbor has a pecan tree- oh the places that random pecan tree sprouts emerge is funny.

I did a Fall craft a few years ago and needed acorn caps. I found them on Etsy! You should sell them Mavis when Chipy is done eating the rest.

I always thought chipmunks were cute until they have attacked our raised beds this year and ate our cucumbers, green beans and okra. They aren’t so cute anymore. We’ve tried everything to try to deter them and will probably need to put something over our beds. We’ve been gardening here 25 years and this is the first year we’ve had problems like this. Any ideas???
