No grocery shopping trips this week, just one quick trip to Costco to pick up some garland when the doors opened and that was it.
I know I’ll definitely be staying away this week too. Actually probably for the rest of the year.
My only grocery shopping plans for the near future are popping by the corner store for milk.
There’s plenty to eat here and while I may not be able to load up on salad kits, it will be worth it to stay away from the stores.
I don’t know how it started, but this has become sort of a yearly tradition for me. People get so cranky and impatient this time of year that it sucks all the joy from walking into a store.
Do you feel that way too? I can’t be the only one.
Before the dressing.
Egg salad! I was craving an egg salad sandwich and the HH was kind enough to make me one. I like his version better. He actually looked up how to make the best egg salad sandwich on the internet!!
All that research paid off.
He used a pastry blender to “chop” the eggs. Who knew that was the secret?
He went a little crazy on hard boiling the eggs so we had the leftovers the next day.
Now that I think about it, since I won’t be shopping for salad kits in the near future, I’ll probably be hanging out in the kitchen more.
You can never go wrong with meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
Or pickety bits.
It was a good week in the meals department!
Dinner with friends, big salads, sandwiches and a homemade meatloaf. Who knows what this week will bring.
I guess I’ll have to go check the freezer. 😉

P.S. Are you having a big Thanksgiving dinner this year? Have you done your grocery shopping yet? Curious minds want to know.

Mark says
I’ve got the majority of my Thanksgiving shopping done. I just need to pick up celery and milk. I’ll just do a pick up order for them.
Mavis Butterfield says
Well done Mark!
Charla says
I went grocery shopping at 9:30pm last night and used self checkout. Didn’t have to talk to anyone.
Bliss

LOVE it!

90% of our Thanksgiving shopping was done at Aldi yesterday. They were out of a few key items – turkeys sold out, no cranberries, fried onions for casserole, or pastured butter. I found a lovely turkey breast for the best price in town though! I’m happy to say that everyone was friendly and patient, letting others in line before them, chatting amicably, wishing each other a happy holiday. The checkers there are always great, too. It’s just four of us this year, so I’ll send hubby to TJ’s today for the remaining items, and we are making a scaled-down version of everything. Happy Thanksgiving to all, and looking forward to a joyful holiday season!

Happy {early} Thanksgiving Andrea!

Yep. I shop at 7am at this time of year. My salads often get replaced by veggie laden soups. I also tend to get kale and cabbage and use that to make choppy salads. It lasts a lot longer in the fridge so that I can wait longer between trips. Last night I made homemade mac and cheese and a kale, apple, raisin and carrot salad with honey/acv vinaigrette and toasted pumpkin seeds. 🙂
Mavis Butterfield says
Swaping soup for salad is a good idea. Maybe I can get the HH to make my favorite Panera tomato soup recipe.
Laura says
That sounds delicious! I’ve been making lots of homemade minestrone lately. It seems a good way to get lots of veggies and beans in one pot.

We join our group of international friends out of town so all we have to do is take the wine and our appetites. We drive down late thanksgiving morning and come back the next afternoon after our friends cook a hearty breakfast and they usually send us home with leftovers. Could not get any easier but then they all come to our house for Christmas when i get to do all the cooking though they do help.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

We’ve been using a pasty blender to chop eggs for years. I didn’t know anyone else does that. It just occurred to me to use it one day and it made perfect sense. So quick and easy.
Mavis Butterfield says
I always used an egg slicer. The pastry blender is the way to go though. Can’t believe it took us this long to figure that out!

My grocery shopping is done. I did get a turkey from Publix (.49 cents a lb. – $4.58 for almost 10 lbs. – how could I resist?) – but I will be cooking corned beef and then making big Reuben sandwiches for Thanksgiving. We will use the turkey another day in the future. We also got a pumpkin pie from Costco but that is almost gone . . . LOL
Mavis Butterfield says
Costco pumpkin pie never lasts long and Reubens sound wonderful! I know my husband would love that.
Mel says
We don’t have family, so if I don’t cook for holidays, no one does. That said, the toddler is not yet aware of Thanksgiving and is also not a fan of most of the foods yet, so I ordered a pre-cooked Thanksgiving dinner from the grocery store. I will also be spending the long weekend potty training the toddler, and there’s just no way to do that and cook. He understands Christmas better, so I’ll probably cook for that.
Mavis Butterfield says
Best of luck with the potty training!!
Mel says
Thank you! We will need it. He’s smart enough that he definitely understands, but he’s so uncoordinated that it will still be a big task.
J in OH-IO says
Brings back memories when potty training our kids we rewarded them with chocolate teddy grahams and watched a Bear in the Big Blue House video about potty training it had singing and songs, etc. Motivation from pull ups to big kid underwear! Best of luck and enjoy the pre-cooked meal – that was a smart idea!!!

I have no family so always by myself. Haven’t cooked a major holiday meals in years now….not worth it. Usually just cook what in house or on sale. This year I did order a take out individual thanksgiving meal with stuffing, potatoes and not sure what else. Will, pick it up Wednesday around noon time so all ready for whenever I want it Thursday. I do miss left overs and my homemade sausage stuffing and gravy……but it is what it is.
Mavis Butterfield says
I know a lot of people are picking up take out Thanksgiving this year. I hope yours is fantastic. 🙂
Elizabeth says
Have worked at staying out of stores in Nov Dec for many years….yep, not fun. Now? Hardly get to go as am taking care of Hubby who broke his leg!! So double reason we are staying home.
Claire says
Hi, wondering what the black tubes are on the pickety bits platter…licorice?
Mavis Butterfield says
Licorice! 🙂
Sue S. says
Switching it up this year to a small ham, from the usual turkey, but still doing mashed potatoes, butternut squash, something green, and some kind of dessert. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Ashley B says
I’m having a more scaled back Thanksgiving this year. I assessed what we had in the house and only bought things we needed to round out the meal. I went to Aldi and got doorbuster deals on celery and carrots. I went to Target where I had a $10 GC and bought a smaller sized turkey, smaller pumpkin pie, and 5lbs of potatoes. We have most of what we need at home and I dont feel like going crazy for just the three of us. I asked my SO not to invite his roommate so I dont feel the pressure to entertain, his family is not visiting this year, and I did not invite anyone extra to come over. I’m going for small and simple this year God willing.
Amber from Ontario, Canada says
I would appreciate the recipe for the egg salad.
Keeping it simple for Christmas here in Ontario. I have my Christmas decorations out so I can enjoy them for about a month or two. I have large velvet poinsettia wreaths, and really good large artificial poinsettia plants in vintage green baskets, around the house. My tree is a small magnolia leaf tree I found at a yard sale years ago. It is decorated with very old family decorations, a few from my very first Christmas. I have an antique red table in my hall, and it sits on that. I also have a large basket filled with old Christmas ornaments from an Aunt in my kitchen. These are all stored carefully in plastic when the time comes. They go up quickly, and come down quickly.
There is also a large wreath for my front door on the inside with lots of bows and fruit. It is artificial too, but looks real. On the porch, I hang an old wreath that was thrifted years ago. It has lots of very bright balls that glisten in the sun. I like the over all effect very much.
I too stay out of the stores for the most part this time of year. I have lots of food in the pantry, and the freezer! I do still go to thrift stores though. They are more relaxed and fun, especially with all the Christmas decorations for sale — lots of interesting decorations, and Christmas cookbooks going for very reasonable prices!
I hope my American friends have a great Thanksgiving, and Christmas!
