It’s go time here at The Lobster House! Goodbye weird parking situation, hello normal driveway.
I can’t believe it’s actually happening!!
The crew showed up on time and got right to work pulling up the junky asphalt driveway and FOUR parking spaces {for the building, now studio} next door.
It will be so nice to see something green in that space instead of ugly asphalt.
I’m so glad we hired someone to do this! I can’t imagine how long it would take if we tried to do it ourselves.
I mean, I like a good project and everything, but I know my limits. 😉
Pulling up the asphalt driveway, and all the concrete steps and walkways is just the first step.
I think after that they’ll begin grading the yard.
Hopefully when they do that they’ll be able to pull up any remaining orange daylilies. We tried our best to get them all last fall but apparently we missed a few because I found more popping through the soil yesterday.
Can you ever really get rid of daylilies though? I guess we’ll find out. It will be nice to move all that soil around and have some new garden soil brought in too.
There are multiple spots next door that have a solid foot or two of mulch. Which is just waaaaay too much.
It’s hard to believe that by the end of summer, this exact spot will be filled with grass and flowers! And maybe a few rows of vegetables too.
I LOVE a proper kitchen garden. And I think the area out front might be the perfect spot for a perennial herb garden.
I’m going to wait until everything is graded though to make any final decisions.
It’s been a long winter, and I am SO READY to get outside and work in the yard again. Only a few more weeks to go before I’m outside playing in the dirt full time again. Yee-Haw! I am excited!!!
Here’s hoping you have a great weekend. 🙂

Yay! Smart to hire it done.
Over mulching drives me crazy and is so bad for the soil underneath. Our house had 12-24” of mulch all over the front yard and tree volcanoes. I removed most of it as soon as we moved in, but 3 years later and I still have residual problems from it. The trees all have rooted above the ground and their bark has fallen off at the bottom and woodpeckers and insects have invaded one tree. I have two trees that I will probably have to remove because they are so damaged from the mulch volcano, elm and cherry. All of the shrubs have been the same with root issues and soft spots and I have a flooding issue over the sidewalk because it was piled up so high the landscaping still sits a good 8” above the sidewalk. I absolutely hate mulch!
The cherries are at peak bloom in DC, so I am going to check those out this afternoon on the tidal basin. I hope it will get me in the mood to get in the yard and do my spring cleanup.

How exciting this all is! I always get so excited when I can see a plan coming together. Now when you say “The Studio” and “The Lobster House” you mean The Studio is the small place next door to your main house? (That you are calling The Lobster House-the 2 story house). It appears I am easily confused these days. LOL. Can’t wait to see how the gardens/yards come together. I shall live through you as we are now in a high rise apartment and there will be no more planting for us. Oh and you are right you can never ever get rid of those hateful orange lilies.

Wish I could snag your daylilies, I love daylilies!!

Did you know day lilies are edible? That might be a good way to get rid of them and keep your budget a little bit lower.
