The HH has turned into a serious walking machine! Since buying a pair of Hoka’s last week, walking is all he talks about.
And well, I finally decided to try on a pair of Hoka’s and I have to agree, the shoes do add an extra spring to your step, so I bought a pair too. 😉
We’ve been out walking every day since and I’ve even joked about signing us up for a half marathon. My husband walking a half marathon, now that would be something to see!
I still think the shoes look a little goofy though with all that white on the sides. And I’m not sure how long the sides will stay white, so I might as well enjoy it while they last.
While we were out walking the other day I found a toaster oven alongside the road. Where was that last week when the oven was broken? I could have made cookies!
I also found a spoon. But I didn’t need that either because I found a whole sack of silverware alongside the road last summer with my friend Jen.
I’m convinced anyone could move to Maine in the spring, and by fall have everything they’d need to furnish their place simply by keeping an eye out for treasures alongside the road.
You could probably get enough flowers to fill your garden too… As long as you don’t mind a lot of hostas and orange daylilies. 😉
People are always getting rid of those.
But so far this year, the best thing I’ve found is this brand spankin’ new beach towel. It was sitting there, right on the curb, waiting for me to come along.
I don’t know what it is about me and free towels, but I always seem to find them.
Have you found anything exciting alongside the road for free lately? Curious minds want to know.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Mr clean magic erasers are pretty good for cleaning sneaker bottoms. I’ve also done Armor All wipes or Oxiclean soaks.

Thanks Mel!!

Yes! We use magic erasers on the white part of our shoes also. Works great!

That’s a great towel! The only thing we find in the MIDDLE of the road is turtles! So we stop and help them cross so they don’t get smooshed!
debbie in alaska says
whenever I help a turtle across I always say “I hope this is the direction you were headed!” and imagine them thinking “lady I just came from this side!”

The best thing I’ve ever found roadside was a paint-spattered floor lamp. Took it home to find out the top of the lamp was actually chased silver.
We have a bog outside our neighborhood; I’ve “helped” innumerable snapping turtles cross the road, and keep a big metal shovel in my trunk just for that purpose. Those suckers are heavy and hiss like crazy. Geez, a little appreciation, huh guys?
Lynn frim NC Outer Banks says
I’m glad you have a shovel for this purpose! You’re braver than me. Snapping turtles look so prehistoric, and big, and “snappy” to me. We have a huge one that visits occasionally and I stay out of his way! Luckily we are back in woods so he’s not near traffic.

I would definitely pick that towel up what a find. I love that your HH took a pic for you while probably cringing inside. Hoka’s are a great walking shoe. I must have an exceptionally wide foot as their wides are not wide enough and aggravate my Mortons neuroma. I also didn’t like having to navigate carpeted staircases with the hobbit length/feel of the heel. I’ll stick with the Ultas for walking. Kuru’s are a good option as well.
Tiffany F says
Good to know. I also have a mortons neuroma and love my Altras. I’ll stick with them for now.

On a trip to France we went on a picnic and I found a stainless steel fork under our picnic table. It was larger than most of our American forks, both longer and wider. I still use it regularly and refer to it as my French Cooking Fork.

My husband is a land surveyor and he has a pretty neat collection of saucers that he finds on the side of the road. One is even made by Lenox! We also have a small collection of vintage glass soda bottles, too, that he has picked up.

I walked at the Camino de Santiago in my Hocus. Only one small cluster on the day I didn’t double sock. Over 85 mi in 6 days. Love them
Elizabeth C Smith says
Cool! Walking The Camino is on my bucket list!!!

I got 6, like new, tomato cages off the side of the road last week!

I am guilty of using a Sharpie on some aggressively white shoes once! It worked. Also: bleach spots on black pants. Scrape on some black trim. Many Halloween crafts. I love me some Sharpie.

I walk every morning (in my Rykas) and last month spotted a microwave oven on the curb plugged into the town power supply for the twinkly lights on the main street. It stayed plugged in for a couple weeks. Handy for coffee warm-ups or dinner prep for the homeless? Who knows? It’s gone now.
My husband is always dragging home curbside finds. He already found a dining table for our use so the most recent free table was delivered to my son and DIL.

I have 3 pair of Hokas and adore them! I felr the same misgivings about the “white-walled” soles, but am happy to report all 3 pairs still remain white. An old toothbrush and some oxyclean or baking soda works wonders. I love the bounce in them too! my oldest ones are ~4 years old now.
My best roadside find is my nightstand- a small dresser by the curb of a yard sale house. I stood looking at it until the owner called out “that’s out for the trash if you want it!” That was 20 years ago and I still love its distressed beauty!

My father and godfather were always the ones to find good things along the side of the road never me that being said I once PUT something huge out in front of my house and it was gone that evening.
Years ago I bought myself a home Pilates machine. I lugged that thing up a flight of stairs to my bedroom. it was up there for years but I only used it one time! Either last summer or the one before I decided I’d seen enough of it and carefully dragged that beast back down the stairs. It was so heavy! Luckily I had some heavy duty furniture movers with wheels in the garage and I wheeled out out to the road. I wish I’d seen who picked it up. I hope they had help!

You are so thrifty and frugal. I shocked that you would pay that much for shoes. I can imagine you saying that 40 dollar shoes would do the exact same thing.
Sue S. says
So how do you think they would be for someone like me who only wears Dansko’s and Troentorps due to plantar facility? Anyone have an opinion to share?
Sue S. says
That’s plantar faciitis, not facilities. You know, that foot issue. Sue

I got my first pair of Hoka Bondi in 2017 because I was suffering from Plantar Fasciitis, and I’m happy to report that I still wear Hoka Bondi’s and no Plantar Fasciitis. I also use Oofas Slides and slippers inside the house as I was told not to go barefoot while trying to get rid of the Plantar pain. I now swear by them both and remain pain free. If I wear my Skechers too long while just running errands, I feel a twinge in the heel area, and its back to Hokas all day for a while. I consider it a medical device and hence worth the cost. Hope this helps
