As much as I love going on vacation, being home and sleeping in your own bed is pretty rad too.
During the summer, it’s even better because of the garden. We came home to a yard full of blooms and tomatoes and beans that are ready to be picked.
And you just can’t beat that. 😉
When we installed our front flower bed last summer, I picked plants with a cutting garden in mind.
But now that the coneflowers and yarrow and hyssop are in full bloom, I don’t want to cut them for bouquets.
Luckily though, there are a TON of hydrangea blooms, so maybe I’ll just harvest some of those this summer instead and haul out the flower/buoy cart this weekend and see if I get any sales.
Lime light hydrangeas. I can’t wait for them to turn that rusty pink color.
Pinks, purples and whites… Those are my favorite colors when it comes to flowers.
Our little vegetable garden on the side of the house is looking really nice too.
Lots of green! Just look at those pole beans climbing that trellis!! In about another week or two we the butternut squash should be making their way up the trellis on the right.
Neat and tidy. Just the way I like it. 🙂
Sauteed green beans are on the menu for tonight.
And fresh tomatoes in the salad. 🙂
I love my small but mighty garden. I don’t know if I’ll make it to 365 pounds this summer, but we’ll see. Who knows, we might end up with a bumper crop of tomatoes and squash.
How is YOUR garden doing these days? What are you harvesting? Are you swimming in tomatoes yet?

I am harvesting Swiss Chard, zucchini, Roma beans, cucumbers, and a few peppers. With herbs, I am enjoying basil, chives, parsley, sage, oregano, and dill. I’m doing a lot of canning, dehydrating, and sharing. I recently started planting some of my fall seeds… leeks, turnips, kale, and another go at long beans. Am hoping to harvest potatoes soon.

Wow! You are rockin’ it. I think I’m going to try and grow potatoes next year. There’s such a difference in taste when you grow your own.

My garden has been giving me a workout! As of 7/28/25, I have picked:
*125 cucumbers (made 33 jars of dill pickles, 23 jars of dill relish, several cucumber salads and gave a bunch to friends) – getting close to the end so I planted a few more seeds.
*75 tomatoes (made 2 jars of tomato soup and ate the rest – salads, tomato/mayo sandwiches, etc) – getting close to the end.
*218 green beans (put them in the freezer) – plants are still producing.
*31 bell peppers (sliced them up and put them in the freezer) – lots more on the plants.
*6 eggplant (made 6 trays of eggplant parmigiana for the freezer) – 8 more growing on the plants.
*1 pumpkin (31.15 lbs – 22inches high and 40 inches around) – all done, so I planted more seeds.
*2 watermelons (small round watermelons – gave to the chickens) – 2 more still growing.
*1 onion (very small – about the size of a scallion) – not doing well.
Whew!!

Hi, Mavis! Do you know the name of the dahlia variety you have? She’s beautiful and I may look into adding her into my dahlia collection.
Your garden looks fantastic! My black krim tomatoes are doing really well and I have a new (to me) variety of a purple-ish cherry tomato that is going to be bursting with ripe fruit any day now!
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Meg,
Sorry, I don’t. I’ve tossed the tag already. Glad to hear your Black Krim tomatoes are doing well. We’re still waiting on ours.
