How much are you paying for fresh corn this year? I stopped by the local farmstand yesterday and noticed corn was going for $0.85 an ear. Last year it was $0.75.
How does that compare with prices for fresh farmstand corn in your neck of the woods?
I had actually stopped by the farmstand for canning tomatoes but I was too late. I’ve been craving some of that salsa I made a few years ago that tastes just like the stuff you can buy at Costco.
I’ll have to try again in a day or two.
Honeynut squash. Have you tried it? I bought two little baby squashes. We’re going to give them a try this weekend.
The heirloom tomatoes they had were HUGE!! I’ve grown some big tomatoes in my day but nothing as big as the ones they had there.
I also grabbed a yellow watermelon. 🙂
I had planned on picking up some fresh carrots so I could make a batch of carrot cake jam but I started talking to someone and got distracted and totally forgot about them. 🙁 Aren’t they beautiful?
I LOVE the carrot cake jam recipe. And it’s PERFECT for this time of year.
While I was looking at the pierce board I noticed that green cabbage was $4 a head and decided to check them out.
And well, let’s just say I picked the biggest one there.
It was so big that when I came home with even the HH was impressed.
8 pounds 9.5 ounces!!! Holy cats Batman. We’ll be eating fried cabbage and bacon for days. Forget about salad this week. It’s cabbage from here on out.

We’re in Indiana and have so many friends who farm that grow a patch just for eating that we rarely pay for it (the best corn in the WORLD, folks). But I have noticed that a couple of stands in my area have a dozen ears for $5.

Mid-Southern Maine (about 20 minutes west of Portland) – $9/dozen.
The farmstand (med-large farm) said that this summer’s weather was tough on the local corn crop. They aren’t offering any deals for corn by the bag, as supply is low, and demand is high. Tomato prices are also higher than past years for the same reason.
Cukes, peppers, squash, potatoes, have all seemed reasonable/similar to years past.
Marie says
I love your informative road finds and vegetables outings but, I am missing the puggle girl is she alright or just not not interested in farmers markets.
Noelle says
You should look up Nigella Lawson rainbow room carrot salad recipe. Easy and delicious. Also it has to be with farmstand/organic carrots. Makes all the difference.
Emily says
If you enjoy the honeynut squash you could grow it up one of your trellises next year. I’ve grown it well that way in the past.
Corn in Ohio is $1 an ear in the city farmers’ market and $0.50 at the country farmers’ market.

I’ve grown honeynut squash for the past couple years here in Central Maine. We love it! It’s the perfect size for a meal for the two of us. It’s a very dry, sweet squash and stores quite well.

How do you prepare yours? Just roast them in the oven like a butternut? Do you do anything special to them?
Pamela Sheppard says
The best deal I had in my area was over Labor day and July 4th.. The sale price was 10 ears for $2. I haven’t seen that good of a price in a long time We get ours from a regional supermarket (only had less than stellar corn once this year)

Peg says
$1/ear. Only price break is $30 for 3 dozen.
Cecile Hoare says
This year we paid $1-1.25 per ear of corn. If you bought a dozen it was $1 each (in Ontario, Canada). As for that cabbage, make some lazy cabbage roll casserole! Shred the cabbage and put everything you use for cabbage rolls layering the cabbage in between and pour over your V8. I cheat and cook the meat, onion and rice first so I’m basically heating the cabbage and tomatoe juice through so about 45-60 minutes to get a nice browned top. You could even use it in cabbage roll soup! Excuse me while I go look at the carrot cake jam recipe!
Katherine says
Honeynut squash is delicious and it’s easy to grow. I like it much better than butternut.
