After much deliberation, I finally ordered my garden seeds and it feels SO GOOD to have this checked off my garden to-do list.
Let’s just say, thanks to all your suggestions on which tomato varieties to try, this is going to be the year of the tomato. Also, I’m about 95% of the way there in convincing the HH about where to put my soon to be tomato garden {ie: in raised beds!}. 🙂 Wahooo!
It’s been two years since I’ve had a proper garden {and by garden I mean vegetable garden} and I told him it’s high time we get one installed.
Which is really just code for C’MON…. Let’s do this already. Enough with the cat videos! Help me build a garden.

I’ve never grown rhubarb from seed before {have you?} but I thought it might be fun to try.
I ordered 2 packets {50 seeds total} and figured if only just a few survive, I’ll plant them in the cottage garden. If I’m able to get more than that to the transplant stage, then I’ll sell the extras on the garden cart this spring.
In fact that’s what I plan to do with all my extra seedlings this year.
My goal is to earn all my seed money back either in seedling, vegetable or flower sales this summer.
I bet I can do it. We’ve got the foot traffic for it, that’s for sure.
Have you ordered YOUR seeds yet? Will you be trying anything unusual this year? Do tell.

Great list! I have grown many of those varieties before:
Sunrise Bumble Bee- love
Sun Gold- love
German Johnson- permanent in my garden; best flavor
Juliet- permanent in my garden; prolific
Sweet Pepper Seeds, Aji Cachucha- won me a 2nd place ribbon at the State fair for dried peppers; full of seeds
Bean Seeds, Calima- love
China Jade Burpless Cucumber- grown for many years; prolific
Black Beauty Zucchini- good flavor; mine got diseased too early
Detroit Dark Red Beets- cannot get them to get fat; tips?
Common Chives- – permanent in my garden pots
Cilantro- need to plant again
Basil Seeds, Genovese- permanent in my garden
Zinnia Seeds, Queen Lime Blush- beautiful; grows easily
English Lavender- all seeds have failed for me
Sunflower Seeds, Mammoth Grey Striped- fantastic; will grow again this year
Rhubarb Seeds, Victoria- soaked for 2 hours, grew a ton of seedlings; transplanted in various areas and only one plant survived now for 5 years where the soil stays moist but not wet; it made a seed stalk and I collected those and tried to germinate and none did but I learned I need to cold stratify the seeds; will try growing again this year as I want an entire bed. I’m sure you will do better with your weather than mine in central NC
Maxibel- trying this year for the first time; heard great things
I’m trying many hybrids this year instead of only heirlooms to compare how much produce I’ll get. I have always ordered from Baker Creek and this year I ordered from Johnny’s.
I’m interested in how you will like the other tomato varieties as I have not heard of many of them. Happy to see you’ll be deep into gardening again. Maybe you’ll get another greenhouse???

I think I want an entire bed of rhubarb too! It’s such a pretty plant.

I grew Victoria rhubarb from seed a few years ago. I found it quite easy and it is very productive.

Glad to hear you had great success with the rhubarb seed! I am excited to give it a try.

I love rhubarb, but have to replace it every few years because it gets terribly hot where I live. Even giving it shade does not help.
I have hundred of seed packets, but I think this year I will focus on tomatoes again because for the past two years I haven’t canned any and it’s time. I plan on purchasing a few vowel early tomato varieties so that I have an extra month of eating fresh of the vine.
