Yesterday I took a weaving workshop in an old barn and learned how to make recycled lobster rope doormats. It was so cool!
And now I want to make a dozen more.
I love it when you find a new arts and craft medium. It’s like that creative part in you opens up a little more and you’re like, hey, I could do this all day long and not get bored of it.
Making a doormat out of recycled lobster rope was like that for me. I could have stood there and made doormats until the sun went down.
Maybe it was the tiredness of the rope, the texture, the muted colors, I don’t know. But I want to make more.
Hello Kitty!
I found Kerin and her company online and saw that she offered workshops. I messaged her and we set a date for a class.
It was that easy!
Making the recycled lobster rope doormat was a really simple process.
Basically we just weaved the lobster rope between the poles back and forth until we were ready to add another color.
When we were ready to introduce another color we simply cut two ends of the rope and melted them together. Once the rope cooled we did some more weaving.
After the doormat was the size that we wanted, we took it off the frame and set it on a table. Using the poles as our guide, we pushed the rope through the pole and out the other side.
We then removed that pole and then weaved the rope the other direction, back and forth until we got to the end of the doormat.
We then spliced the rope and tucked the ends back into the mat and then used a brush to loosen the remaining dried seaweed off the mat.
I made a pink and blue one to match the colonial storm door at the studio. I LOVE how it turned out!!
And I love that we were able to repurpose old lobster rope that would have ended up in a landfill had Kerin not rescued it for doormats.
I think I may have a new hobby!! 🙂
