Get Back To The Basics
Hello friends!
This past week we hung out at the library, went for a long drive along the coast and went to the hardware store together.
It’s practically a ghost town around here. Tons of places are closed and it’s so quiet. It will probably stay this way from now until the end of March.
It’s such a nice change from the crowded streets and hustle and bustle of spring, summer and fall. I told the HH we should enjoy it while we can. 🙂
Unplug
This year I have committed to unplugging as much as possible.
I’m keeping the ringer on my phone turned off more and not picking it up as much as I normally would.
I slept until 8 am yesterday!! The strange thing is, I’m actually becoming more productive during my “work” hours by unplugging two consecutive days a week.
Fingers crossed I can stay on track.
In The Kitchen
I may not be able to try out any new pastry recipes, can jam in my Weck jars or put the beans in my bins to good use this month, but I can make plans. 😉
I’m having a good time with my $100 a month challenge though. Truly I am. The HH tries to tempt me every single day which is kind of funny. He should know by now that I have incredible willpower and I won’t be tempted to cheat..
Kitchen Goals For This Year
- Master the pear frangipane tart from Standard Baking Company.
- Put my Weck jars to use.
- Use two bins of beans.
Rug Hooking
I’ve been keeping busy lately drawing out patterns and putting kits together.
I also turned a bunch of small rugs that I recently hooked and listed them on Etsy. It’s only the twelfth day of January and so far it’s been a pretty productive month.
Last year I worked on a bunch of larger rugs. I have a few big ones that I want to work on this year too but right now I’m really enjoying working on smaller pieces in the evening.
Rug Hooking Goals For This Year
- Finish drawing out all my patterns by January 31st.
- Finish making all my kits by February 28th.
- Finish dyeing wool by March 31st.
- Release 10 new rug hooking patterns/kits.
- Hook 27 of the patterns from the “someday I’ll hook these” bin.
Go New Places – See New Things
The HH and I were talking about Nova Scotia the other day. Have you been?
I’d love to drive there but if we were to go to Nova Scotia we’d also have to go to Halifax {to see Maud’s house at the museum} and Prince Edward Island {all things Anne of Green Gables}.
I also wouldn’t want to miss Campobello Island {FDR}.
Maybe this is a trip best taken in the spring or fall though? If you’ve been I’d love to hear about it.
Travel Goals For This Year
- Travel someplace {internationally} that I’ve never been before.
- Travel somewhere in Maine {overnight} that I haven’t been before.
Walk And Stretch More
I signed up for a half marathon! I can’t even remember the last time I did a half marathon. Luckily it’s not until May so I have time to train. I know I can finish, I just don’t want to be at the total back of the pack.
Which might be a little hard because I’m not a runner. But I do like to walk fast so I figure I should be okay. I still need to get a pair of good walking shoes. I’m thinking about getting a pair of Altra’s again because they fit so good.
Things tend to start thawing out around here towards mid March, so I should have plenty of time to get some good long fast walks in without worrying about freezing my face off.
Walking/Stretching Goals For This Year
- Get into some sort of stretching routine
- Fast walk a 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon
Garden
I’ve been working on a list of garden seeds to order and came across dandelion seeds for sale. Seriously? Are there people who actually BUY dandelion seeds?
Well apparently. How wild is that?
I think my main focus for this summer {vegetable wise} is tomatoes. Lots and lots of tomatoes. While I don’t have a ton of room, I do want to grow a good, rounded variety of them.
Maybe 6-8 different kinds. There are SO MANY to choose from it’s been hard to narrow it down.
Garden Goals For This Year
- Rework the driveway and garden areas
- Go crazy and plant a ridiculous amount of flowers
- Step out of my comfort zone and plant some flowers I’ve never planted before.
Paint
Yesterday I stripped the top of the desk I’ll be using in the guest room.
I’m hoping to get the legs done today and with a little luck, have the whole thing painted and up in the room by the end of the week.
I figure by the time I’m done I’ll have about $25 into the desk {$20 for the desk, $5 for supplies} and that’s way cheaper than I could have bought a new desk for so I’m pretty happy about that.
Slow and steady. That’s my plan for this year.
Until gardening season comes along… Then look out!! 🙂
Painting Goals For This Year
- The Van Gogh wall
- The gallery wall down stairs
- The captains wall in the hall
- Trim and walls
I hope you have a great Monday.
Peace Out.

Oh Nova Scotia how we loved it there! We didn’t go with anything in mind except to drive around and stay at old fashion Bed and Breakfasts. We were young and didn’t think of anything else. Your ideas sound so wonderful. We had our youngest son with us he was about 12 at the time and we all agree the people there were the nicest people we have ever met in our lives. We drove there all the way from Delaware (don’t think I would do that again though ever). Best 2 weeks ever for us.

Dandelion seeds make sense to me if you want to grow dandelions for tea, salad greens, or wine. I would not trust a wild dandelion nowadays as many contain traces of roundup and other broad leaf weed killers. That stuff stays in the soil awhile and if the seeds come from a place that has been sprayed or received overspray the new plant is already contaminated. I have bees and overspray of pesticides and weed killers poisoned and killed two of my colonies last year, despite my location being on a no-spray list. My bees this year are at tree farm and are less stressed and doing well. I would only eat a dandelion if I grow it myself from seed.

I love Altra’s and the price point is great! Things that I like about Altra:
box toes
I do not pronate ( Hoka is the worst for pronating my foot, and the price, oye vey)
They are flat and well balanced
Just a simple walking/running shoe.
I do not believe buying a new pair yearly is unreasonable, I walk over 900 miles
/year! Walking is my jam.

P.E.I. is one of my favorite places. The scenery and people are beautiful. As a longtime Anne Shirley fan, it was a dream come true for me back in the fall of 2015. Enjoyed driving around the island and seeing all the quirky spots like the Potato Museum and Glass House. The food was simple and delicious. Loved the pottery shops!
Definitely Go!

Yep- call me cray cray but I bought a $3 packet of dandelion seeds just a few months ago. I tried collecting my own on my property but we have very little normal dandelion here. The neighbors have false dandelion and it gets mowed down since that shoots up long stems and doesn’t have the same benefits for humans as regular dandelion.
I bought the seeds that have the large heads and really long leaves (saw the leaves for sale in the produce section at Wegmans too) to grow a lot for my honey bees since they are an early source of pollen and nectar, for my chickens to add the flowers and maybe a little greens to their snacks, and for the roots to dry and make teas.
I plan to collect the seed heads and plant where I want them to be.

Halifax public gardens/park is lovely in the early fall. It is full of different dahlia gardens to explore. So many different kinds and they are so gorgeous. The Anne of Green Gables house is really cool too on Prince Edward Island. So much to read about the author. We went at the end of September.
