Get Back To The Basics + Learning to Unplug
We went to Bingo again. And I won $25!!! More people are finding out about Bingo at the Senior Center and this time the place was packed.
There were even more guys there this time. Maybe 12-15. It was hilarious.
I love being on the cusp of things. But when they become too popular {like the hipsters finding out about corduroys}, I’m out. We might go one more time though, we’ll see.
In The Kitchen
All I’m baking this summer are my favorite chocolate chip cookies.
Kitchen Goals For This Year
- Master the pear frangipane tart from Standard Baking Company.
- Put my Weck jars to use.
- Use two bins of beans {working on it}
Rug Hooking
I worked on a few more sunflowers while waiting for the HH to get zapped. I think he only has about two more weeks to go and then he will be done.
His poor ear. It’s swollen and red and he says it feels really uncomfortable. 🙁 And apparently it will continue to feel that way for some time afterward.
Rug Hooking Goals For This Year
Finish drawing out all my patterns, making kits, dyeing wool by March 31st.- Release 10 new rug hooking patterns/kits. {4 down 6 to go}
- Hook 27 of the patterns from the “someday I’ll hook these” bin. {6 down 21 to go}
Go New Places – See New Things
We went to check out a few antique stores and I spotted a celery vase. I had no idea that special vases were made to display celery, did you?
I love going to antique stores. They always bring back so many memories from childhood.
I have yet to come across the conquistador lamps my grandparents had in their living room though.
But a celery vase, who knew?
Travel Goals For This Year
- Travel someplace {internationally} that I’ve never been before.
- Travel somewhere in Maine {overnight} that I haven’t been before.

Walk And Stretch More
I’ve been doing a bunch of power walking lately. The air was thick though on one of the days and after a few minutes I decided to head back home.
We are still eating mass quantities of peaches. I think we still have three more weeks to go with the peach subscription.
We have yet to do anything with the peaches other than eat them fresh or in cereal or salad which is sort of surprising to me. Oh well. I thought for sure by now I’d have a freezer full of peach puree.
Walking/Stretching Goals For This Year
- Get into some sort of stretching routine
- Fast walk a 5K, 10K, and
Half Marathon
Garden
We picked out the first zucchini of the season!!!
The HH made fried zucchini, onions and scrambled eggs with it. The first of anything from the garden is always the best isn’t it?
Pretty soon I won’t be able to give them away for free.

Rework the driveway and garden areas{DONE!}- Go crazy and plant a ridiculous amount of flowers {working on it}
Step out of my comfort zone and plant some flowers I’ve never planted before{DONE!}
Paint
And last but not least…
The buoys out front have been such a hit this summer that the HH had to make me another batch.
Between painting buoys, Dr. appointments and taking care of the garden, it’s been a busy summer so far. Here’s hoping things will slow down a little in August.

Oh yes Mavis if you start looking you will find a ton of celery vases from just plain all the way to sterling silver. They were the thing in the Victorian era. As an antique dealer I only delt in New England Primitives in original paint but was always on the look out for my mother who adored Victorian “stuff” and if the cut glass was daisy and button pattern all the better. We just got a bag of peaches from a friend who has an elderly gentleman who still has a farm it these were white peaches which I had not had since I was a kid and oh man were they good. My grandmother always grew white peaches and Delaware was always known as the Peach Capitol of the World. Who knew. Glad the treatment for your husband is ending soon, I just can’t imagine him being zapped in his ear like that. My piddly little treatments seem like nothing compared to what he is going through. I do believe you have found a whole new revenue with your mini bouys, you will be painting away. Happy brand new week.

I know what you get can get HH for Christmas, a fold up table for his mitre saw! He’s likely killing his back and his knees cutting on the deck! It’s the least you can do since it’s a project you’re doing! lol Aren’t hubby’s awesome?!

Celery vases could be an East Coast thing, though they eventually moved to the West and Midwest as easterners emigrated.
You displayed your cut celery upright, almost like a bouquet, on the table. My ancestors weren’t wealthy enough to have a fancypants vase, but my grandma used to have an oyster stew dinner for New Year’s, inviting friends and neighbors — and putting glasses of cut celery, frilly parts and all, down the center of the table.
I didn’t look it up to quote it, but Laura Ingalls Wilder’s daughter Rose describes something similar during a Thanksgiving wedding of her hero and heroine in her novel FREE LAND. Wonderful book, by the way.

It seems so funny to think celery was so exotic that they made a special vase for it. I LOVE antique stores. You can learn so much.

If your husband’s radiation staff hasn’t given him any cream to use on his ear, perhaps they could prescribe one for him. Ours gave us some without charge to help with radiation burns. It helped quite a bit.

He has been putting the alcohol free aloe gel on during the {5 times a day} and using the Eucerin lotion overnight. They actually said his ear is looking really good all things considered so that’s good news, but still. He said it’s pretty uncomfortable.

I remember it gets really uncomfortable. I had to take a week or so off about 3/4 of the way through. I had my treatments done in my dermatologist’s office so there wasn’t any wait time. 3 minutes in and out. Easy peasy except for the pain which is cumulative. I feel for him, I truly do. I know he can’t wait for it to be over.
