Get Back To The Basics + Learning to Unplug
First, thank you for checking in and letting me know if you could get the blog to load on Friday. I still don’t know what happened, but I’m glad the issue has been resolved.
Even with the website down, I feel like I failed at unplugging last week. I got sucked down two rabbit holes last week and I can’t even tell you what I was originally looking up on the internet or what I wasted nearly 6 hours on online.
It makes me crazy when that happens. It’s like you go into some sort of trance and you know whatever you’re looking up is a waste of time but you can’t seem to pull yourself away.
I did squeeze in some pretty sunsets though. Note to self: Go kayaking.
In The Kitchen
Nothing but 1 freshly baked chocolate chip cookie everyday and fruits and veggies around here lately. 🙂
But I suppose if you have a garden, you’re in the same situation at your place. 🙂 Ahh summer. While it’s probably my least favorite season in Maine, I do love all the backyard and local produce.
Kitchen Goals For This Year
- Master the pear frangipane tart from Standard Baking Company.
- Put my Weck jars to use.
- Use two bins of beans {working on it}
Rug Hooking
In my spare time {HA HA HA} I’m trying to finish up my last few fall pieces. This Lori Brechlin design is one of my favorite fall patterns to hook.
I’m hoping to have a few new rugs and pillows listed in my Etsy shop this Friday.
Rug Hooking Goals For This Year
Finish drawing out all my patterns, making kits, dyeing wool by March 31st.- Release 10 new rug hooking patterns/kits. {4 down 6 to go}
- Hook 27 of the patterns from the “someday I’ll hook these” bin. {8 down 19 to go}
Go New Places – See New Things
I didn’t go anywhere exciting last week but the HH went to Home Depot to buy a new faucet for the cottage. He installed it too! How cool is that? He’s so handy I can hardly stand it sometimes.
We have plans to re-do the kitchen at some point but for now, I’m just glad to have a faucet that works properly now.
Travel Goals For This Year
- Travel someplace {internationally} that I’ve never been before.
- Travel somewhere in Maine {overnight} that I haven’t been before.
Places I’ve Been So Far This Year
- Boston {Birthday getaway}
- NYC {Girls getaway}
- John Mellencamp Concert + Stockbridge, MA
Walk And Stretch More
Although it’s been really warm around here lately, I’ve been able to get some good walks in. I haven’t found a single treasure at the beach this summer though.
Usually by now I would have picked up a few discarded towels, maybe a beach chair and definitely a hardback book or two. I guess I need to go earlier? Or find a new route.
Also, I need to start looking for a 5K & 10K so I can check that goal off my list.
Walking/Stretching Goals For This Year
- Get into some sort of stretching routine
- Fast walk a 5K, 10K, and
Half Marathon
Garden
We’ve harvested a ton of Roma and cherry tomatoes but no big ones yet. I think we’re getting close though. Maybe another week or two?
I’ll have to check in with Kiln Guy to see if he’s harvested any beefsteaks yet.
I just realized this is the first summer I don’t have purple Cherokee tomatoes growing in the garden. How did that happen? It’s one of my all time favorite tomatoes.
Garden Goals For This Year
Rework the driveway and garden areas{DONE!}- Go crazy and plant a ridiculous amount of flowers {DONE!}
Step out of my comfort zone and plant some flowers I’ve never planted before{DONE!}

And last but not least, my latest project; Painting a few new wooden books for the picket fence.
We decided on four new titles for this year {thanks for your suggestions!} and I’m excited to show them to you once I get them finished. Hopefully by this time next week.
I hope you have a great Monday!!

Biddeford has free weekly 5K park runs on the Eastern Trail. We stopped by your buoy cart Saturday. My sister was visiting and bought herself one. She loved the one I gave her for Christmas and had to have another. If you saw (2) woman around 4 taking forever to pick one out, that would be us. I may have to pick her up a shamrock one at some point as she was stuck on which to get and that one was a major contender.

Hi Mavis,
I need your help. Hubby is taking one of our daughters to England in October. He is looking to book a proper English Tea for them while they are there. I told him I knew just who to ask :).
They are staying in Exeter, Oxford (day trip) and London – near Pattington/Hyde Park.
Any suggestions? Tips/Suggestions on what a proper English Tea should include?
Thanks!!!

Hands down, my favorite spot for afternoon tea is Fortnum and Mason in London. Been a couple of times and everything is spot on. Victoria Grey is my favorite tea. https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/fortnum-mason/

Happy Monday! Just curious, what brand & type of paint do you use?
Mavis Butterfield says
Whatever Michaels craft store sells. I’ve boout big packs off Amazon before too. I’m not super picky.

Thanks for the great photos Mavis. Isn’t it great living by the sea!! Glad to see the HH working at a project. Are you guys ever done?
I’m curious about what paint you use – is it DecoArt or Folk Art? Before I got heavy into rug hooking, I was a decorative painter – antique reproductions, painting on furniture, etc. I used JoSonja tube paints. But I don’t do much of that any more.

Whatever the HH brings home. 🙂 I’m not too picky.
