Get Back To The Basics + Learning to Unplug
By the time we were able to stop by the library the other day to load up dvd’s it was closed.
So I decided to download an audiobook instead. Raising Hare by Chole Dalton. Have you read it? I’m about half way through the book and so far so good.
A little nutty, but then again, we feed the birds and I leave out treats for our resident chipmunk so who am I to judge?
In The Kitchen
Thank you for all the soup recommendations. We are looking forward to trying some new recipes. I told the HH we’ll need to try the leek soup recipe when our leeks are ready to harvest.
I don’t know how much leeks go for at the grocery store, but it looks like we’re going to have about 50 here in a few more weeks.
We are still eating zucchini, peppers and potatoes at least 3 days a week which is fine by me. We tend to eat the same thing over and over and over again and then move on to the next great thing. Do you do that too?
Kitchen Goals For This Year
- Master the pear frangipane tart from Standard Baking Company.
- Put my Weck jars to use. Working on it!!
- Use two bins of beans {Working on it}
Rug Hooking
I dyed a batch of my favorite whale blue yesterday. The weather was so nice, I let it drip {mostly} dry in the sunshine.
Rug Hooking Goals For This Year
Finish drawing out all my patterns, making kits, dyeing wool by March 31st.- Release 10 new rug hooking patterns/kits. {4 down 6 to go}
- Hook 27 of the patterns from the “someday I’ll hook these” bin. {12 down 15 to go}
Go New Places – See New Things
I’d really like to see Nova Scotia, but the HH isn’t excited about doing all that driving. He also thinks Nova Scotia is going to look a lot like Maine.
If I could find a deal on tickets, I’d love to go to London {again} and stock up on all my favorite treats and visit my favorite gardens. The flight is only 5 ½ hours and there would be afternoon tea. Which is always a plus in my book.
Who knows. Maybe we won’t go anywhere this fall?
Travel Goals For This Year
- Travel someplace {internationally} that I’ve never been before.
- Travel somewhere in Maine {overnight} that I haven’t been before.
Places I’ve Been So Far This Year
- Boston {Birthday getaway}
- NYC {Girls getaway}
- John Mellencamp Concert + Stockbridge, MA
Walk And Stretch More
We passed by a free table on one of our walks and I scored two 12” knobby trays and a shelf. All with their tags still on!! I have no idea where I’ll put them or what I’ll use them for but they needed a good home so… I snatched them up.
It’s been sort of slim pickins this summer with the freebies. I keep hoping I’ll come upon a stack of free terra cotta pots but no such luck yet.
Walking/Stretching Goals For This Year
- Get into some sort of stretching routine
- Fast walk a 5K, 10K, and
Half Marathon
Garden
The last hurrah. Tomato season is 95% over. I can’t believe it.
I wish I would have weighed our bounty because it’s been such a great year for growing vegetables. I bet we’ve grown at least 200 pounds of tomatoes, zucchini, beans and cucumbers.
The beets were total duds this year, but the carrots and leeks are coming in strong.
Garden Goals For This Year
Rework the driveway and garden areas{DONE!}Go crazy and plant a ridiculous amount of flowers{DONE!}Step out of my comfort zone and plant some flowers I’ve never planted before{DONE!}
Paint
And last but not least, I had planned on staining the fence but it rained on Friday and Saturday so I decided to work on painting a new batch of loon ornaments for my Etsy shop.
It’s hard to believe the holidays are right around the corner. It’s crazy how time seems to fly by these days. Summer, I don’t want it to end.
I hope you have a great Monday!

Mavis – if you are still looking for an overnight trip somewhere in Maine, my daughter and I just returned from a two night trip to Monhegan Island. It was perfect. No cars allowed, beautiful hikes, quiet, spectacular views, friendly people. I would recommend wholeheartedly to you and anyone looking to escape the real world. We took the Hardy Boat out of New Harbor and stayed at the Island Inn.
Mavis Butterfield says
That has been on my list for a while. Hard to believe we haven’t been there yet. Thanks for the reminder.
Nancy Settel says
I didn’t comment on your soup recipes on Friday but yesterday I did do a big (and I mean big) pot of potato leek soup. Lots of potatoes, leeks, carrots, celery. Thickened and then on top shredded cheese and broken up bacon. Was really good. Your garden is still looking good to me.
Mavis Butterfield says
Are you freezing some of it?
Nancy Settel says
no will share with a few older people here who don’t usually cook to much. Somehow I have never learned to cook “small” when it comes to soup.
Tamara says
I would not trust a person who says they can make a small pot of soup.
Nancy Settel says
hahaha!!!
Mona McGinnis says
I’m envious of your tomato crop. There are 12 tomato plants here w/ 12 tomatoes! They did not thrive with the heavy spring rains here in NE Alberta. I need to source some from a local producer to can & make salsa. Zucchini, patty pan squash, spaghetti squash are abundant, some of which were turned into a curry soup yesterday. Today, chocolate zucchini cake.
Torry says
Do you have a recipe that you could share for the chocolate zucchini cake? Sounds so delicious!
Mavis Butterfield says
This one is really, really good!! https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/super-moist-chocolate-zucchini-cake/

Here in central Maine most of my tomatoes are still green. One or two are showing some red. Your tomatoes are beautiful. Do you make spaghetti sauce?

We feed the animals in our yard – squirrels, cardinals, bluejays, doves, rabbits, woodpeckers, crows and whatever else wanders in. The crows keep the hawks away – keeps our chickens safe from them. We have a huge tree stump where we put the treats and spread some on the ground for those animals that can’t get to the top of the stump. It is fun to watch them!

Loved Raising Hare! Such a beautiful book.
Kathy in PA says
I loved Raising Hare too! I even got my husband to read it.
Sue S. says
I got 3 peppers and exactly one tomato but lots of herbs. Herbs are my favorite thing to grow.
Mavis where did you get the drying rack. I have a similar one from Ikea but it doesn’t have the little side wings. Thanks.
