After we had our fill of pizza in New Haven, we headed to the town of Mystic to load up on pastries at Sift Bakeshop.
I had been to Sift Bakeshop in 2017 and had a delicious pastry and so I was pretty excited to be going back.
The first thing I noticed was how different the shop was both inside and out. For starters, there were SO MANY flowers!!! And they were gorgeous.
It was hydrangea city. They were everywhere!
And there as a ton of outdoor seating as well. Check out those hanging flower boxes!!!
Seriously, there were hydrangeas everywhere. I couldn’t help but point them all out to the HH.
The inside of the bakeshop was different too.
Lot’s more seating and huge display cases with everything from croissants to ready made salads and of course, pastries. The whole place was beautiful!
Since we had just eaten pizza, we passed on the croissants…
And the ready made food.
I was tempted to get one of those chicken salad sandwiches for later though. They looked really, really good!
But I was there for the pastries.
And I’m not going to lie, when I saw what was in the pastry case I was actually a little disappointed.
Yes they were beautiful, but I wasn’t interested in cheesecake, or sponge cake, or opera cake {I don’t like coffee} or mousse and so that left carrot cake. Eh.
I’ve never had a piece of carrot cake that’s topped my version. But my options were limited so I went ahead and ordered their carrot cake roulade.
My all time favorite pastry though is a lemon tart and it’s the first thing I always look for when I’m in a bakery. A tart shell, real lemon curd and sometimes a little toasted meringue on top. You just can’t beat it.
They did have a lemon tart in the case, but it was made with sponge cake. How was that going to taste?
I didn’t have a clue but the HH told me to just order it and so I did.
I also ordered a London Fog {which was really good} and a chocolate chip cookie. We decided to get everything to go and have dessert later at the hotel.
And the verdict?
Well, the cookie was okay. Not spectacular, but okay. I took a bite and then passed it off to my husband. I wouldn’t get it again.
The lemon “tart” wasn’t for me. It was basically a bit of sponge cake that sat in a tart shell with a teeny tiny bit of lemon curd with a little jammy bit on top.
It was pretty, but I had two bites and that was enough for me.
The HH said it was different… and that he thought it was okay. But clearly I’m a pastry snob and he’s not.
And the carrot cake? It was the best thing we bought. Pretty spectacular actually. I would definitely buy it again.
I’m glad we got a chance to go back to Mystic, even if it was just for a few hours.
Have you been?
If not, what is YOUR favorite seaside town? I’d love to know. Especially if they have a bakery!! 😉

I’ve always championed the bakeries, and love your dedication to it – so today’s post is a little sad – too bad, that.
On the upside: hooray for that carrot cake recipe of yours! Love it when the carrots are hand grated. I think it makes all the difference.

Sift was super cute, the employees were friendly and the London fog and carrot cake were spot on. And those hydrangeas!! Oh my. I need to up my game.

The table and chairs you photographed are the exact tables and chairs my sister and I sat in last summer when we went to Sift. We had the chicken salad sandwich and it was excellent. Oddly enough we did not have dessert. Love Mystic.

Next time you are in the area of Mystic, there is a new Sift Bakery in Niantic, CT, which is not far from Mystic. There is one that also just opened at Mohegan Sun Casino. You could start with the one in Niantic, then the casino, then right to Mystic.

Try Lis Bakeshop in Mystic (15 Holmes St). Everything I tried was wonderful – I can taste the butter, fruit, flakiness of the muffins + croissants now
