I thought long and hard about my afternoon tea and cookie routine before I left to go on my camping trip to Zion. Ultimately I decided that no camper should be without them so I packed accordingly.
Jen thought I was a little crazy, but even more so when I suggested we pick up a pie at Costco the night before we were to meet up with our camping group.
Pie on top of the mountain… Wouldn’t that be a treat!?
But as soon as I had the enormous {nearly 5 pounds!} Costco pie in my hands I decided that carrying an extra 5 pounds up a mountain was sort of crazy. 🙂
So we ended up just packing it in the van the next morning and had it for dessert at the camp site two nights later with our fellow campers. It was a welcome treat at the end of a hard day of hiking, that’s for sure. Normally on Monday’s I share about what groceries we bought and I ate the previous week.
This past week I was on the trail… So the food looks a wee bit different.
The first morning we met up with everyone and ate breakfast at our designated hotel. Lunch was premade turkey wraps {they were delicious!} and chips.
Other than my tea and cookie rations, I think the thing I was most worried about while I was preparing for my hiking trip was how much water I’d consume {and have to carry}.
It was suggested that each person should carry 100 ounces of water each day so I had packed 6 bottles of water on our first day of hiking.
By the end of the first day, I had drunk almost 4 bottles of water, a thermos full of tea and 1 fizzy water. {The fizzy water came from a cooler at the end of the day that our guides had in the back of our van}.
This was sort of a relief because it meant I probably really only needed to pack 4 bottles of water {instead of 6} and so that’s what I did each day for the rest of the trip.
You wouldn’t think 2 pounds would make much of a difference in a backpack… But it does!
I tried a new snack on my trip. Taos Bakes Bars. Holy cats these are good! Have you tried them?
Each day before heading out on the trail each of us selected 4 treats from an enormous tub our guides brought.
I think over the course of the 5 days we were hiking I tried 4 different kinds of bars and the coconut vanilla bean one was my favorite. If you see these somewhere, try one. I bet you’ll love them as much as I do.
The first night of our trip we stayed near the base of Zion National Park so our group went out to dinner. Which after a long day of hiking was AWESOME!
The Spotted Dog in Springdale, Utah. I highly recommend it.
The first night of our trip was in a hotel, after that… It was all trail food and campground meals. 🙂
With temperatures dipping down to 39 degrees at night, the Selk bag came in handy!!!
Chicken salad with goldfish crackers… Trail dining at its finest.
There were also pickety bits!
It was probably my favorite meal of the entire trip.
The guides did a great job of keeping us fed on our trip, that’s for sure. I was amazed at how much food we were eating {probably twice or even three times as much as I would normally eat}.
Fresh salad, pulled chicken, beans {and gas station Zingers}.
Tea and cookies at 7,000 feet. 🙂
Jen and I even treated ourselves to In-N-Out at the end of our hiking adventure. It was a great week! We ate like lumberjacks, slept in the dirt, challenged ourselves physically and pretty much just had a great time.
The trip was a 10/10 in my book.
I’ll share some more pictures and tell you all about it in the coming days.. But for now, I’m just happy to be home.

Definitely not the hiking and backpacking food I have had. My trips have mostly all been in the backcountry for a week or two at the time and dehydrated and calorie dense. The food looked amazing and even better you didn’t have to carry and cook it and cleanup.

Will you please give us the name of the guide outfit? I’m sure you have that planned this week, but I’d love to know more about their guided trips!

I just got back from a hiking trip in Utah (Moab, though, and I slept in a bed every night). Still, if I see overnight oats or a protein bar in the next 2 months, it will be too soon.

Totally true. I’ve backpacked on a section of the Pacific Crest Trail for 200 miles. Lost 20 lbs, but must say…when my husband came to pick me up,I told him to bring wine and meat! It was an awesome experience. Climbed HalfDome and many mountains at high altitudes. Also, trained carrying water jugs in my backpack to get ready. Slept in a tent, which I carried. Got rained on as well as snow and this was in July. No trail bars for me for quite a while.

I am very fascinated by the PCT (I’m in California). You will never see me do Whitney or Half Dome though. Trail bars, doritos…no thanks. I made myself a big fat salad as soon as I got home this year!

Mavis,
I would love to order the Selk Bag just like you have, but could not find it on their site. Could you give us the order details please?
Glad you had such a good time!

I bought mine last year. It looks like all the new styles zip off at the waist. 🙁
