This past week the HH and I took a little research trip to the great state of Rhode Island. And well, you can’t get to Rhode Island without going through Massachusetts so we decided to stop at New Deal Fruit in Revere on the way home for a bite to eat.
Apparently New Deal Fruit is the freshest store in town. 😉
They had lasagna noodles for $0.99!
Tomatoes for $0.99 a pound!
And celery for only $1.49 a bunch. What a deal!!
You know your near Boston when the sign says Watamelon. 🙂 🙂 🙂
DIY Spaghettios!!! Have you ever seen pasta like this before? I had to get a bag.
I’m thinking these with a little ground beef and some Rao’s sauce would make a pretty fine meal.
I don’t know about you, but I sure do love Italian grocery stores. I had to stop myself from buying fig oil. FIG OIL!? Have you ever heard of such a thing?
New Deal Fruit $14.56
The last time I was there I was thinking about buying the almond syrup. This time I did. Still not exactly sure what I’m going to do with it.
I also grabbed some pizzelle cookies too. I love anise flavored baked goods, don’t you?
We sat on the tailgate and ate our lunch. A chicken cutlet and broccoli rabe sub for the HH and cold pasta and meatballs for me. I LOVE cold pasta. In fact I prefer it to warm pasta.
When we were in Rhode Island we ordered a margarita pizza from Mother Pizzeria and it was spot on. 10/10.
The creamy crab and artichoke dip was really good too.
Once we got home though it back to the same old thing… SALADS! Lot’s of salads.
Market Basket $10.69
I forgot to snap a picture but we also picked up 4 avocados and a gallon of milk from Market Basket last week too.
This was the second week in a row that Market Basket was selling CALIFORNIA avocados {$1.50 each}. Let’s hope these ones are as good as the last ones.
For the record, nachos rule. You can never go wrong with nachos for linner. Never.
Weenies and Trader Joe’s waffle fries {which were awful}.
Trader Joe’s Kung Pao chicken. I think we’ve both hit our limit on this freezer meal. 😉 Perhaps it’s time to start cooking real food again? Or just eat salad every day {which I would LOVE to do}.
And last but not least,
When you make toasted sandwiches… What do you use on the bread? Butter, cooking spray, mayo something else? Curious minds want to know. {We’re butter people.}
Well, that’s about it.
Have a great monday everyone!

Always butter on a toasted sandwich. I tried mayo once and was not impressed.

For toasted sandwiches, I use butter in the pan and mayo on the top piece of bread.

Yes- I like the anise pizzelles. My grandmother always made that flavor with pastel nonpareil sprinkles. She kept them under a glass dome along with some kind of fried Italian cookies that she would use a pasta roller for and then cut into strips. She would roll each cookies and pinch the dough into two overlapping circles, fry, then toss in either powdered sugar or a honey syrup. They would have little bubbles in the fried dough. I have no idea what their name was though. Do any of you?
I make pizzelles with pure almond extract though since my neighbors and family prefer that flavor. They are so pretty and are perfect with tea and coffee!

Yes! My grandmother made them too!! I finally spotted them in Maria’s Pastry shop in Boston {now closed, she retired} and she called them Guandi. The Google calls them Guanti. Maybe I need to do a research trip to Italy to find out how they’re really spelled. 😉 https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/marias-pastry-shop-boston-save-bakeries/

There’s a lady at the Amherst Farmers Market in Massachusetts that makes pizzelles. I bought some last week – she had 2 flavors – anise or almond. I chose almond. Delicious!

New Deal Fruit!!! Most hilarious YouTube channel ever!

New Deal is the real deal! I miss their Italian subs.
I tried mayo once to make a grilled cheese but I wasn’t impressed, I’ll stick with butter.

Since I know you’re trying to stay out of the clubs, why not make yourself a Mai Tai with that almond syrup? That might help you stay away a little bit longer! 😉
I LOVE anise flavored anything! I do get those pizzelles from time to time. But it’s hard to eat them all before they go stale. No one in my family adores anise like I do.
And, it’s always butter for me on toasted sandwiches.

Just looked up Mock Mai tai recipes… I’ll have to get some orange juice and give it a whirl!

Those homemade SpaghettiOs are spoon pasta! I love pasta you can eat with a spoon on the couch in front of a good movie!
We have been eating turkey sub salads which is all the sub ingredients sans bread with Greek dressing. Try it with dill pickles. First time I had eaten dill pickles on a salad and they are the bomb with the dressing.

My mom used to drizzle a bit of almond syrup in fruit salad and it was amazing. A little goes a long way. you can also put some in tea, coffee, smoothies, or in glazes for baked goods.
Mavis Butterfield says
I’ll try it in my tea this afternoon! Thanks Mrs. C.

I grill my sandwiches with mayo and absolutely love it! They get so crispy.
Toast is a different matter, and requires Irish butter.
I don’t like anise flavoring or anise cookies. Not a fan of ANY Italian cookies, really.
I also don’t like almond flavoring.
