We’re getting there… That’s what I told my husband yesterday on our way to the lumber store to get a few cedar boards to replace the old pine boards on the platform in front of the barn door.
We briefly thought about just sanding the old boards down and staining them, but the HH decided the boards were too damaged.
The pressure treated base, though, was still in good shape, so he decided to keep that in place.
In a lot of ways it’s been really nice to have a small house and a tiny yard. Home improvement projects cost less and most of them can be completed in just a day or two. {Which my husband LOVES!}
The instant gratification factor is really high, that’s for sure. 😉
One board off, one board on, that was his approach.
The whole project only took him about two hours from start to finish.
Luckily we had some leftover stain from when he rebuilt the back deck last summer so he used that for the platform.
I think it turned out great!
This is what the area looked like last fall when the roofers were here.
And here’s what it currently looks like.
Next up on the list, painting the bottom of the platform {white} and then scrubbing and painting the door {white} and freshening up the trim around the door frame.
Then it will be time to add a few pots and stuff them full of flowers! {My favorite part!}
We’re getting there! One small project at a time. 😉

it always amazes me how much small changes can make!! love seeing each one!

Lovely clean and simple. I would be so tempted to paint that door a color that plays with the hydrangea’s when in bloom. Or over the top lobster red.
Kimberly says
Honestly I think that door should be painted a color. Red or black maybe. Anything but white. The deck looks so much better though!
Mavis Butterfield says
I agree! I said it should be black. Actually my first choice was red to match the lobsters. Hh thinks it should be white. Which means every time it gets dirty it will be a pain. But what do I know.
Teri says
RED would be awesome! But any color not white!

And dirty from gardening hands
Peg says
I agree! The door should be black. Even red will show dirt.

Are you sure you want to paint the base? See that as an ongoing chore but maybe you don’t intend to be there that long!
Sue says
My thoughts, too. That base is just going to get bumped by the mower or lashed with an edge trimmer. Refresh it with the stain used on the boards and call it good.
Mavis, you know your HH is wrong about white for the door.
ESPECIALLY considering that cool thrifted sign you intend to put above it.
Maybe choose a lavender/lilac to complement your Limelights and Allium Medusas?
And…think about adding shutters (painted to match the door) to the windows, to liven up that white space. Anybody agree?

I was impressed HH stained the new boards without even putting any blue/green tape up on the barn siding to protect it from the stain. Gutsy and impressive! (We put up tape and somehow still splash stain on the siding).

Looks great! I agree, a color would be nice on the door.

I totally love the tan beige door, it matches my front doors perfectly! Actually, it is on my list to paint and I will be doing a naval blue. I think any color but the tan or white would be great for your door. Too bad the glass did not have a grid it to match the cottage windows. For the kick plate under the door, maybe sheet metal topper or changing to vinyl or something you will not have to maintain as much.

Oh-the door simply must be a showstopper color. Something unexpected-this is your change to go wild. Ha-it is just paint, can be changed in less than the 2 hour HH limit.

I agree with some of the other commenters. White door would be really blah. Paint it an eye popping color and put some shutters on. The HH could make cedar ones.
