I don’t know why, but every time we go to the grocery store I always look at the price of candy bars.
Probably because there’s nothing else to do while I’m waiting for the person in front of me to be rung up.
Kit Kat bars are now $1.50 at Market Basket {the local grocery store}. $1.50!!! It always makes me feel old when I see how much things cost these days. When I was a kid, candy bars were only $0.25.
At Home Depot though, that same 1.5 ounce Kit Kat Bar is a whopping $3.48!! And NO, that is not for a “King Size” bar. It’s for the exact same, four little sticks of chocolate coated wafers.
Talk about a serious price difference.
It makes me wonder how many Kit Kat Bars Home Depot sells in a day vs Market Basket. I like candy as much as the next person, but $3.48 for a run of the mill candy bar? Umm no.

I avoid buying American chocolate, so I wouldn’t buy a bar at $1.50, let alone $3.99, because the companies keep changing their recipes, making the chocolate cheaper and cheaper. KitKat, in the US, is made by Hershey’s due to a licensing agreement they made with Rowntree, before Nestle bought them out in 1970. Nestle had to honour the agreement. That’s the main reason why you can get different flavours of KitKat in other countries, but not here, as Hershey rarely does it.

The victim was the basic chocolate bar. So waxy, lacks flavor. Just ick. Thats been 15 years ago? I have boycotted them since. (Other side is the workers are overly well paid, then cried when the company moved operations.to avoid payroll expense…the union again screwed themselves, made me happy on that note)

No way but no candy bar is worth eating anymore. They just are not the same as ten years ago. Candy bars were 10 cents when I was a kid. We could find enough pop bottles to turn in in half an hour to get at least two. Those were the days!

I have a kid who really likes NECCO and those are just $1.25 at my grocery store, cheap compared to the other candy bars, which seem to be about $2.99 or so for regular size and $3.99 or so for share/king size. So expensive and not even good anymore. The chocolate has gone downhill over the past several years, so I rarely buy American candy anymore. Reese’s peanut butter cups are awful now, I think they are making them in Mexico and changed up stuff. I like Ritter, Kinder, or Milka if I buy one, the chocolate tastes decent and the price isn’t too much more. Lindt, Ghirardelli, Dove, etc. are all marginal, sometimes I get a dud.

I’m sure they do a brisk business of overpriced Kit Kats at Home Depot. The place is almost always filled with crying, tired, bored, and hungry children, dragged along by their parents, that need to be quieted/pacified. Nothing more boring than “Dad’s Store” to a kid.
Of course, when I was a kid, the marching orders were, “Be quiet, don’t touch anything, and keep up with the cart!” No crying or whining about it.
I agree that most American chocolate just isn’t worth buying/eating. I have so much less of a sweet tooth as well, so candy bars have been off the table for years.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. 1/2 of the sales are the kids and then other 1/2 is likely workers going in for supplies that are hungry/want something to get through the rest of the workday.

Oh, the good old days. I remember buying a candy bar & a soda for $0.25. The current price is certainly a deterrent.

No, I would not. In fact, I refuse to buy candy for myself due to the cost. I will occasionally be “weak” and purchase candy for my kids, but it kills me to pay the prices they’re asking!
I won’t buy bottled soda anymore, either. So expensive.

We only buy Lindt 70% chocolate bars and I only eat one square per serving. My DH buys them so I have no idea what they cost but I don’t care. I need my chocolate!

Ok…back in 1967 when I worked at Long’s Drug Store, you could buy candy bars at 5 for 19 cents! Now that was a deal! Those were the days! Over the years, I have seen the candy bar prices jump through the roof. I do buy Halloween candy in the fall, but it floors me at the prices.

I must be ancient – 83 years old and I remember when I was a kid, in Canada. You could get a chocolate bar and a bottle of pop (soda) for a dime.

I was in a cute little shop in Port Gamble, WA recently and saw a Rocky Road candy bar! Oh how I loved them when I was a kid! So I bought it. I could not believe how awful it was. There was nothing reminiscent of the Rocky Road of my youth! Not the chocolate, not the marshmallow or the nuts. Blah! I won’t waste my money on that again!

I have bought several of the over priced bars at HD or Lowes. I know its a scam but after loading large amounts of lumber or walking miles in the store…sometimes you just want a sweet treat!
