Yesterday we popped by Mainely Blooms in Arundel for a pop of color for the front garden and were not disappointed.
Located at 1903 Portland Road, Arundel, Maine 04046 is a family owned perennial nursery and there are so many plants to choose from, it’s crazy!
One of my favorite things about Maine is all the small businesses and how much the locals support them.
It’s so nice to have the option to shop at places like this rather than the big box stores. Plus, you know exactly where your money is going.
Hollyhocks! I’ve only ever had them in one of my gardens.
If I had more room I think these would look fantastic in a two foot border along the back fence. I love how tall they can get and I think they’d be perfect in a cottage garden setting.
The HH really liked this plant.
Does anyone know what it is? I wasn’t so crazy though about the shockingly yellow/orange colors as it doesn’t go with the pink, purple and white look I’m going for.
I do like the daisies though. They’re such a happy flower.
In the end we went home with 3 purple foxglove plants. I’ve always loved these, and the bees do too.
With all the perennials we planted this year, now we’ll have something in bloom from now until the first frost.
Flowers! I just can’t seem to get enough of them. And if you’re local and need to load up on perennials, Mainely Blooms has got you covered. 🙂

P.S. What’s in bloom in YOUR garden right now?

The yellow plant appears to be celosia. I’ve grown these before as annuals. I’m in Columbus, GA. Are they perennial in MA?
Mrs. C. says
Yes, celosia. It comes in many colors. I think it’s an annual in Maine.
I love the little businesses all over Maine and Vermont, too!

Oh the foxglove is beautiful and always a favorite of mine. I adore the hollyhocks so much but for some reason I could never ever get them to grow for me and come back each year. I’m with you I didn’t care for the yellow ones I am not a fan of the color. Have done all of our homes (5 through out the years I am sure you have me beat) in purple, pink, lavender and blue. Just a combo I think that you never get tired of. I love getting to go along on you adventures in Maine and New England. We traveled there for so many years.
Bonnie in GA says
Good morning Mavis, I agree with Shari. It is a celosia and comes in a lot of colors like pink, red, orange, fuchsia, etc.
Heather C. says
The Yellow/Orange is Celosia. I planted it this year in a reddish pink called dragons breath with dark leaves. However, in my zone (6a I think) it appears to just be an annual. I’ve had it planted for about 2 months now and my Favorite part is the flower top part doesn’t seem to die off and has color at all times. Very interesting flower for sure!
Bonus- Google indicated it was dog safe. My dogs don’t go after my plants, but I am always super careful about what they are around.

Our fox gloves (and all the wild ones around town in Gig Harbor, WA) have had a bumper year. We have several in our yard that are taller than my husband. He’s 6’4. I have grown up around them as a wild plant but don’t remember ever seeing them that tall before.

I have deers blooming in my yard. Lots of them. I’ve learned to live with them. They will stand 3 feet away while I’m weeding. Every year I try a few new plants that are supposed to be resistant but aren’t. Luckily the plants that are resistant self seed and the garden looks pretty good. For me all the herbs work so lots of lavender, rosemary, thymes, chives etc get moved around. They also don’t touch gray leaves, salvias, lenten rose, daisy’s, cistus, yarrow and spirea They leave the boxwoods, yews, sarcococca, and grasses alone as well. I really can’t complain at all. It’s just not the lush super colorful garden I envisioned when we moved here.

My artichokes are blooming in my yard. I’ve let them go to flower and the bees are loving them. They’ll burrow all the way down to the bottom of each bloom and there will be about a dozen of them on each. If you get your nose down close (beware the bees!) they have a lovely scent.
Mavis Butterfield says
I LOVE artichoke flowers!!

Hydrangeas are almost in bloom here. Astilbe and Huechera are just about ready to pop. I have a very dark, almost black, Hollywood that comes up in a neglected area and grows to about 10 feet. It’s on an old copper trellis.
Sue S. says
That’s hollyhock.

Hi Mavis, I didn’t read all the comments, but please be aware that foxglove plants are toxic to dogs. Please keep your sweetest baby away from them!
