Chocolate Cake Brownies with Chocolate Icing

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 eggs

For the Frosting

  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 6 tablespoons milk {I used 2%}
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 16 oz powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract


  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line an 11Γ—16 pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Put the flour and sugar in a large mixing bowl and set aside. In a large saucepan, put the margarine, shortening, cocoa powder and water together and bring to a boil {stirring constantly}. Pour the mixture into the flour mixture and mix well. Slowly add the buttermilk, baking soda, eggs and vanilla and stir until combined.
  3. Pour batter on to lined pan and bake at 375 for 18-22 minutes.
  4. To make the icing, place the margarine, milk and cocoa in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, stir in powdered sugar and vanilla. Ice brownies while hot.
  5. Let set for 15-20 minutes and then serve. Yummm a roo!
