Top of the morning to you! Today instead of showing you all the big salads I ate last week I wanted to tell you about the grocery prices in Quebec.
We finally made it to Quebec for our mini vacation with The Kiln Guy and The Chef.
We drove separate cars {because seriously, who wants to do an 8 hour road trip with 4 adults and a crazy dog and arrive cranky? Not me.} 🙂
Before heading to the Airbnb we rented, our first stop was to the grocery store to load up on a few essentials. I have no idea what city it was in… But it was well past Quebec City and up along the St. Lawrence River.
Call me crazy but food prices in Canada seem really high. For instance, a rotisserie chicken was $13.49 CAD {about $9.81 USD}. And this was at a BIG grocery store!
If you wanted to buy a whole chicken and roast it yourself at home it was even more! Holy canolies people. Someone explain that to me.
Bananas were going for about $0.65 USD a pound. Bananas, I guess they’re cheap everywhere.
One thing Canada has that our major stores here don’t, is REAL in season LOCAL berries. And they were fantastic!!! Also, the containers are cuter than ours too.
A giant tub of salad greens $5.08 USD. About a dollar more than at Market Basket {here in New England}.
English cucumbers $1.44 USD {that would be a sale price here in the states}.
Actual baby carrots. Now that’s not something you see everyday. There were rainbow carrots too!
Clearly I was shopping for pickety bits. 🙂
I thought the weenie prices were kind of high. But maybe that’s a good brand. What do I know.
Milk was crazy expensive $4.06 USD at a major retailer! At home, Market Basket sells Oakhurst {the good stuff} for about $2.89 a half gallon.
The milk in bags was a much better deal.
Yogurt seemed a little high too. About $6.03 a tub.
A pound of butter $4.27 USD. I have no idea if this was the good stuff or just the no frills butter.
The cheapest eggs were $2.97 USD. Is that about the same? We usually get our eggs from Costco so I’m not sure if $2.97 is high or low or just about average price these days.
20 ounces of Cheerios $3.54 for 20 ounces.
Want a jar of the best pasta sauce on the planet earth? It will cost you $9.80!!! Ouch.
I tried the get the HH to buy a bag of the ketchup Cheetos but he wouldn’t. Have you tried them? Are they any good? I can probably stand to eat 1 Cheeto every 5 years.
But you know what I did buy? A jar of dill pickled hard boiled eggs. 🙂 I mean c’mon. When you’re on vacation you have to try SOMETHING new, right?
I LOVE checking out grocery stores in other countries!!
I can’t wait to share more about our trip.
Peace Out.

Yikes, $1.44 for an English cucumber? That’s 50% more than what I pay for one at the Aldi near me in central Virginia!
Cari says
Agreed! I’m in Ontario and just price-matched English Cucumbers for .99!

I’ve been following a Canadian blog and they list prices in both US and Canadian dollars and for the last 10 – 15 years, they say if you’re American, you can subtract 25% to get a rough idea of the difference. Most of those prices are pretty close to that.
Peg says
Curious how people acted if they realized you were from the US. Not making this political (so no one else do it either). Truly only curious.

Very friendly! 🙂
Kelly-Jo says
Please do tell us if you enjoyed the pickled eggs!
Dawn says
Our Canadian grocery prices are out of control.

I also live in Canada and can confirm our prices are ridiculous. The prices you posted are cheaper than our area even not on sale. the butter is definitely just a cheap no frills variety cause the good stuff is $8-10 a pound.
Patti Vanderbloemen says
Almost every price you listed is about the same here in Northern Virginia. Eggs are much higher here, as is the milk. Sigh….
Cari says
Could you have chosen a more expensive province to shop for groceries in?
Bananas in Ontario are .52/ lb
Yogurt is about $5.50
Cdn $
La Belle Province is big bell expensive!
How are the gas prices?
Sandy says
I have family in Quebec City- I never noticed prices being higher- do the tariffs have any effect?
Also – Quebec City is a more expensive city- as prices in NYC or LA etc are. It makes up in its beauty!! Love my K-bekers as we call them. Have a great time!!
Sandy says
Don’t miss ILL De Orleans!!
A must stop visit!!
Joyce Dvorak says
I don’t want to upset anyone, really, but I wonder if some of the products were from the US and subject to reciprocal tariffs. The Cheetos made me think about that.
Krista says
Yes ! We just got back from vacationing in Quebec. Groceries were very expensive. They have an amazing Oikos yogurt flavor there : Chocolate Banana. Wish they sold it in the states, I miss it already.

Pickled eggs are so awesome! But DILL pickled eggs? Heresy!
The best pickled eggs are done up in a brine of salt, vinegar/water, sliced jalapenos, and Tabasco to round out the heat. Habanero peppers if you want to bring the pain.
Some of my best college Fridays included going to the local saloon (est. 1898) playing pool, swigging 50-cent beers, and eating pickled eggs. We called that dinner. ;^)

What is half salted butter? low salt or half with salt and half without?
What did the strawberries cost? They did look good.
