I think this may have been the first in a very long time there were not strawberries in our boxes of free chicken scraps. This time around it was mostly water melon, cantaloup and apples. Plus a few grapes. Kind of a snooze fest of you ask me.
In the summer Mr. Produce Guy was giving us 4 to 5 boxes a week full of all sorts of produce. But the last few weeks there have been only 3 boxes. I’m guessing it’s a seasonal thing. I suppose the chances of getting boxes of sweet potatoes and cranberries for Thanksgiving are pretty slim. But we’ll see.
Here is what we decided to keep-
- Grapes {for lunch snacks}
- Melon {for breakfast}
- Lettuce {for taco night}
- 1 pear {snack}
- Giant owl of apples {for homemade applesauce}
Free food? I’ll take it, any day of the week! But my fingers are totally crossed for free cranberries and yams next time. Ha!
Peace Out Girl Scouts, have a great day. Now go forth and find some scraps!

Yes, no strawberries the last couple weeks in my boxes either. Totally bummed as I usually just got enough each week to snack on – not the zillions of pounds to figure out what to do with that you did! But a couple months ago I DID get about 10lb of sweet potatoes – so you might get some, you never know. 🙂
This week:
2 heads romaine + 5 hearts of romaine (I love snacking on plain romaine hearts!)
1 head green leaf lettuce
~4 heads of bok choy (I have a great simple sauteed recipe)
5 stalks celery (snacking + broth)
7 roma tomatoes (added to last week = batch of tomato sauce to make beef bolognose)
6 radishes (salads)
4 red peppers (snacking)
1 bunch green onions (?)
I sure wish I was getting all the apples you are! Still waiting for prices to go down in the store to less than $0.99/lb – sheesh!
