Yesterday I planted my first seeds in the raised garden boxes! Turnip, beet, radish and carrot seeds all made it in.
While these raised garden boxes will be mostly used for growing tomatoes and peppers, I wanted to maximize the space so I put two rows of root vegetables down the middle of each box.
I had to get the seeds planted right away because today they’ll be hydroseeding the area. The evening temps are still in the low 40’s but I’m sure the seeds will be fine.
Homegrown turnips. They taste nothing like the ones at the grocery store. I really like the tokinashi variety. I think this will be our 4th time growing the white beauties.
They almost taste like radishes.
The elevated garden bed I ordered should be here in a week or two. I haven’t figured out exactly what I want to grow in that yet {it’s 2.5’ x 10’} but I know they’ll be some cucumbers and zucchini, that’s for sure.
I’ll grow the pole beans alongside the Lobster house on the trellises we installed last year. It’s SO NICE to be planting a REAL garden again.
I’ve really missed not having a proper area to grow vegetables the past two summers.
We had some leftover cobblestones from the driveway so the HH extended the flower border along the front of the house for me.
And we also repotted some plants that outgrew their containers from last year. The strawberries were a giant mess. But now that they’ve been divided I think they’ll thrive.
I also beautified a few of the pots I had picked up alongside the road last summer with yogurt.
I don’t know about you but I just love the way terra cotta pots look with a little “patina” on them. I learned this trick from a Martha Stewart Living show 30 years ago and I’ve been doing it ever since.
It’s a good thing. 😉
Do you do this too? In another month or two they’ll be nice and crusty.
I have a cool project using terra cotta pots that I’ll be working on soon that I’m really excited about. My lips are sealed though until I can gather all my supplies.
In seedling news… The flats of Shasta daisies I planted less than 2 weeks ago are doing really well. I have absolutely NO IDEA what on earth I am going to do with 250 Shasta daisy starts.
Maybe I’ll plant some in front of the new fence. I need to ask Kiln Guy if he’s still looking for plants for his hillside.
And the rhubarb plants I started from seed! I started setting them outside for a few hours at a time a few days ago and so far so good.
I’m kind of thinking it might be nice to create a rhubarb “hedge” along the inside of the fence. If I did that I could sell rhubarb stalks out front all summer on the garden cart.
I bet it could be a solid money maker once the plants get established. Strawberry rhubarb pie anyone? Yes please!
Gardening. Every year is different. And I love that! There is always something new to try or a problem to figure out. And there is always, ALWAYS room for one more plant. 😉
Here’s to another great day playing in the dirt.
