Market Basket $36.03
So apparently the HH and I are on a quest to not only eat healthier this year, but to find the best plain Greek yogurt out there.
I’ve never been a big fan of Greek yogurt, but since it has more protein and less sugar than regular yogurt, I’m learning to like it. With your help of course.
A few of you mentioned you really like the FAGE brand so the HH picked up a tube of it when he was at Market Basket last week.
Let’s just say, the FAGE Greek yogurt tastes way better than the Costco nonfat Greek yogurt.
Probably because the FAGE Greek yogurt isn’t nonfat. 😉
The FAGE greek yogurt does have twice as much cholesterol than the Costco nonfat, but not enough to be a deal breaker in my book.
Also, a big thank you to those of you who suggested we add a little jam to our yogurt. 1 tablespoon of jam is just the right amount of sweetness. The HH likes to add a little honey to his as well. {I’m not a big honey person.}
And I’m still loving the PBfit powder.
Fact: Nachos are always a good idea.
Costco Shopping Trip $94.46
And so is Dubliner cheese. Have you tried it before? I must say it’s probably my all time favorite cheese. If I could only pick one cheese from the rest of my life, it would be Dubliner.
The blueberries from Costco were hit and miss this week. One tub was good and the other one tasted a little funky.
So many salads.
So little time.
While I do like a little rotisserie chicken in my salads from time to time, I think I like bacon {with chopped apples} the best.
I called this one the ring of fire. 😉
And last but not least, we went out to dinner with our old neighbors last week to our favorite place in town. Steak and fries is always a winning combination.
It was a good week in the meal department. At least I thought so anyway.
The HH did mention that he’s getting a little tired of salad so maybe it’s time to branch out a little and add something else to the menu.
Have you been making anything that’s quick and easy lately? Want to share what it is? My husband would be grateful.
Have a great monday everyone,
~Mavis

I swear when I see your salads you make I immediately want a salad (and have you make it as they always taste better when someone else makes them), yours always look so good. Also I never buy sour cream (for things like baked potato) we use the yogurt (plain) instead taste just the same. Have a great day.

I’ve been enjoying more salad too. I did up salmon on Friday that had a Corn and Bean Salsa to go over it and last night made a Hamburger Hash.
Wendy C says
We have been eating lots of chicken salad sandwiches with tomato and lettuce. Add some SunChips and grapes on the side and you have a cool filling lunch. I’m in Alabama and its too hot to heat up the kitchen.
Anne Wiebe says
OR, you can make chicken salad but just sub in cooked chickpeas, and make your sandwich. You’d be amazed how good this is!
Christine says
Hi, Mavis. Have you tried Siggi’s? The plain version is a little tart, but delicious with a drizzle of maple syrup or golden syrup. The strawberry is also fabulous, and if you freeze it a little it’s almost like ice cream.
Cindy R says
The Fage yogurt does have a non-fat version. It. comes in a pink and white color container. It is also sold in the individual size portions if you want to try the non-fat variety to see the difference in flavor between the non-fat and 2%.
Christie says
I wasn’t a fan of Greek yogurt until I tried Cabot Greek yogurt. Its not tart and very creamy. They add in cream and milk and whey protein. It’s very thick so I make my yogurt bowl the night before and add brown sugar and frozen fruit. The liquid from the thawed fruit thins it out perfectly.
Magen says
I came on here to mention Cabot! I think it is definitely the best Greek Yogurt.
eliz says
I thought your steel cut oats breakfast seemed quite a healthful choice. Why do you feel greek yogurt is healthier?
Mavis Butterfield says
It’s nice to change things up a bit. 1 serving of the oats has only 4 grams of protein. The Greek yogurt has 17. The oats have 4 grams of fiber, the yogurt 0.
Patty says
If you have an Insta Pot, you can make your own yogurt. It’s easy and very hands off. I always strain off the whey after it cooks and it’s the consistency of Greek yogurt. You get a lot of yogurt for the cost of a gallon of milk!
Elise in the SF Bay Area says
I started making my own strained yogurt recently too. I make it on the stove/oven and then train it in a chinois strainer with 2 (barely) overlapping large basket coffee filters. The flavor is much less tart than the TJs I was buying. I add 25g jelly to 170g strained yogurt for a large serving. (I start with 2100g milk, add 60g yogurt, and strain/add back to 860g to match the protein value of the TJs)
Mona R McGinnis says
The quick & easy is a pasta salad loaded with veg, with or without protein (chicken or fish). The last one was loaded w/ diced peppers, black olives, artichokes, chickpeas. Homemade yogurt has become a staple in this kitchen, sweetened w/ pureed home preserved fruit (raspberries, peaches, blueberries).
Jennifer says
It’s summer, why aren’t you grilling? That’s always easy to me. It’s in the 90’s all week here. Tonight we will cook up a 6 pack of chicken gouda sausages and make cous cous. We can eat that 3 days and I don’t even have to turn on my oven. I’m still on a roasted veggie kick but I should really skip that this week. We have an air fryer that I will try to use instead of my oven if I really want to cook.
Elise in the SF Bay Area says
During a heat wave here, I will sometimes use the crock pot, instant cooler or airfryer outside on our deck
Erika says
My favorite way to eat yogurt is the following: Frozen fruit microwaved for 1 minute, add yogurt and granola, stir well. Using frozen fruit microwaved makes it taste sooo much better than fresh fruit. Weird, I know, but try it! I discovered when out of fresh fruit.
suzanne says
Cowboy caviar is quick and perfect for summer. Basically black eyed peas, black beans onion, tomatoes, corn, maybe peppers, avocado, jalapeño and or cilantro In a simple vinaigrette.
wrap it up in a tortilla or just scoop it with tortilla chips. It’s very adaptable and delicious. I’d send recipe links but those comments don’t seem to get approved so will stop bugging ya with them.
Ashley Bananas says
A co-worker brought this in for a pot luck and I could have eaten it all day! It was wonderful.
Anne Wiebe says
The version I make is black beans, tomatoes, corn, lots of sweet red pepper, cilantro, green onion, cilantro with some Pace picante sauce as the dressing. I’ve been told that charring the corn on the grill and cutting it off the cob is good, but I just use frozen corn, no need to cook it. I’ve never included black eyed peas or jalapeño, but avocado is good in it
suzanne says
Love how versatile it is. Never thought about using a salsa but have tossed in hot pepper seeds before. Yes to frozen corn but leftover charred is on the menu!
Annette says
I make an extra easy version —
1 can Rotel (any heat level you prefer)
1 can Mexicorn
1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
1/3 cup italian dressing
dash of garlic salt
Optional – diced jalapeno, chopped black olives
Mix and let set overnight for the best flavor. Very good with multigrain Tostitos scoops.

Meatless Monday and Taco Tuesday bowls- brown rice, ground turkey burger, cans of black beans, pinto beans, and corn. Add fixings (sour cream, salsa, cheddar cheese, olives, avocado, lettuce). Chicken a la king with drop biscuits, salmon and sweet potatoes, quinoa. BLT sandwiches, chicken apple sausages with Yukon gold potatoes (steamed in glass bowl in microwave), tuna wraps, cooked cinnamon apples, Brussel sprouts, egg roll in a bowl with tofu, homemade pizza with sliced thin Italian chicken sausage coins and mushrooms. Plate of fresh veggies cut up (cukes, carrots, celery, mini peppers) and homemade hummus served with dinners. On high rotation at our home is Brittany’s Bites recipe for Sweet Peppers and Lentils (youtube from 10TV news) as the chilled leftovers are a healthy, cold side dish for summer (I double the lentils and vinaigrette). I always enjoy seeing your weekly meals, salads, recipes as it is inspiration for me. Thanks!
J in OH-IO says
Forgot to mention, my HH likes the sweet peppers and lentils leftovers cold on top of his lunch salads from time to time, too since the lentils add extra protein.

You should really try the whole milk plain Skyr by Icelandic Provisions. Has all the same health benefits as Greek yogurt, but without the tartness. And it’s so creamy. I love it.

I’ve finally figured out that the Target near my house marks all their Salads on clearance Saturday and Sunday. They were clearance priced at $1.33-3.02. We got five bags between 1.33-2.00. I was gifted some tomatoes and mushrooms from a friend and added those to the salads.
I made chili this weekend. I use celery sticks in my chili. I used the rest of the stalk to make celery with cream cheese and raisins. I did burgers with sautéed mushrooms and onions. I made a quiche which lasted a few meals. We did eggs and bacon a few times. I also made a batch of brownies and a batch of chocolate chip cookies.
We haven’t eaten out since Tuesday. Which has been a nice reprieve. Also, my family enjoys my cooking, which feels nice. =)

Omelets will take nearly any type of vegetable.
Tracy says
Mavis, may I suggest you consider making your yoghurt? It’s soooo easy. All it takes is whole milk, a packet of culture and a little countertop $20 yoghurt maker. I do it all the time for plain yoghurt, then flavor it different ways once it’s made. Takes about 6 hours and presto.
Diane says
Your salads all look so yummy!! How about sharing the ingredients for a few of them?
Ashley says
Green Mountain Creamery is hands down the best plain Greek yogurt out there (I’ve tried them all). They used to have a maple flavor if you want the sweetness but I’m not sure if they do anymore.
Oikos is harder to find plain but definitely packs the biggest punch as far as nutrition, but it’s good.
I will often add the smoothie packets from Kenko to mine to make it extra fruity, but they are not cheap so I usually wait until I find them on clearance. My kids like it with PBFit as you do, hubby is all about the fruit, granola and maple syrup. I find everything is better with a few mini chocolate chips.
Jill says
Why are you focused on non-fat Mavis? Fat is actually good for you. Google it.
Mavis Butterfield says
I’m not. We bought the Costco fat free yogurt {2 tubs at the same time} because Kiln Guy and The Chef raved about it. We thought we’d give it a whirl. We still have some left… And I’m not going to just throw it away.
I am not a fan of fat free products at all. 🙂
Katherine says
It’s been so hot here that I’ve been making whole wheat orzo salads, with homemade vinaigrette, lots of veggies, crumbled blue cheese and served cold. It’s a great way to use up veggies. For a twist I sometimes add lentils for extra protein.

Fact: nachos feed my soul!!

Did you put the toffee bits in your yogurt? Do tell how yiu used them please!
Mavis Butterfield says
No, my chocolate chip cookies. 🙂

How about a video tutorial on how you plate up your salads!? I’m serious–how do you get all that on one plate?! (And a trip to a bakery as a reward!)
J in OH-IO says
Yes, your salads are beautiful and the visual presentation on them is spot on- a feast for the eyes!
GrannyB says
I believe this is how it is done. Start with 4-5 small pieces of lettuce on a plate. Heap on all of the toppings you want. Call it a salad because it has lettuce!! And we all know it’s the toppings we like anyway!! Hahahahahahaha
Gina says
I second this!
Amy says
So I’m curious how you liked the pickled beets pictured. I tried them a few weeks ago because they were by far the cheaper option and they tasted ok. Then I looked at the ingredients and saw the high fructose corn syrup listed. I think I would rather just eat the high fructose corn syrup in something else that tastes better and skip the beets.
Jillbert says
Skyr yogurt is so much tastier. I can enjoy is plain & unflavored! It’s not sour and has tons of protein. It’s pricier than Greek yogurt but has great creamy texture. I’ve tried to like nonfat Greek but only like the whole milk but no problem with skyr. We have a brand called Icelandic Provisions or Siggis that’s good, not sure what’s avail in your area.
