Another cool stop on our date day last week, was to the Langlais Sculpture Preserve in Cushing, Maine.
Artist Bernard Langlais was born in Old Town, Maine in the early 20’s and after attending college, some time in the Navy and spending time in the studio as a painter and exhibiting in New York, he and his wife purchased a summer home in Cushing, Maine in 1956.
The story goes, that after he completed work on his summer cottage, he began using the leftover wood scraps to create “paintings” which then lead to larger structures.
Eventually, Bernard and his wife left New York and returned to Maine on a more permanent basis. And in 1965, he and his wife Helen discovered the 90 acre property across the street from their summer cottage was for sale, and purchased the property.
Soon after they began renovating the old farmhouse and out buildings and adding rooms on to the house like a living room and a bathroom.
This is what that farmhouse looks like today. š What a beauty!
Today, dotted all along 90 acre former homestead of Bernard Langlais are some of his enormous wooden figures. Everything from elephants to President Nixon can be found.
Peanuts painted on the underside of one of the elephants! š
Christina Olson.
Nixon.
While I wasn’t able to snap pictures of all of the sculptures, or see the wildflowers in bloom, I’m so glad we stopped by to check out the Langlais Sculpture Preserve. I have a feeling we’ll be back again this summer. š
The preserve is currently owned by the Georges River Land Trust and is open from dawn to dusk {no tickets required}. You can find out more information about the Langlais Sculpture Preserve and even watch a video HERE.
Have a great weekend everyone,

Hi Mavis! This comment is a random one- unrelated to this post Iāve just started reading a book that I think you might love and had to share! Itās about an introvert who tried being an extrovert for a year. SO funny! āSorry Iām Late, I didnāt Want to Comeā by Jessica Pan. It made me think of some of your posts.

Mavis,
I love reading about your road trips & this one is no exception! New England is so full of history & creative people. Thanks for sharing. As an aside, I tried to comment on your giveaway post earlier today, but when I hit submit, the webpage said there was an error. I was wondering if I could try again & still qualify.

How neat! My family and I just went to “out there” where a sculptor, Charlie Brouwer, lives and displays his wooden constructed art on his acreage near me in Floyd, VA. The pictures don’t do it justice. https://www.charliebrouwer.com/outhere.html
