Our sweet Lucy has passed away. And we are heartbroken. But we are also so incredibly grateful for the 13 ½ years we were able to spend with her.
She was so much fun to be around and completely untrainable.
To say she was motivated by food, would be a huge understatement. She knew what she wanted {it was whatever you were having} and she would wear you down until you gave her a bite.
Lucy was pure magic.
She loved her people. Especially the HH. She was his #1 fan and had slept alongside him for pretty much her entire life.
The void she has left in our lives in the short time she’s been gone has been unimaginable. The silence in the house by her not being here has been the hardest thing to get used to.
13 ½ years. With all her ailments, her lumps and bumps, leg and eye problems, we knew we were on bonus time with her.
There is comfort though in knowing, all our sweet little dog ever knew in her lifetime, was LOVE.
She was LOVED. So incredibly loved.
~Mavis

I am so sorry to hear about Lucy’s passing. It is so heartbreaking to lose a loved companion.
Yours is the first and only blog that I follow and I vividly recall you getting Lucy. I was delighted to see her pictures and follow her little adventures in your posts.
When I think about it, your blog has impacted my life in an odd way. I’m a great one for nicknames, and I called my mother “Lucy” years. I am sure I got the name from your precious Lucy.
I started calling my oldest daughter “Mavis” as a nickname when she was a girl because your name, “Mavis Butterfield” just tickled me. She is now 28 years old and she is still Mavis.
Our 12 year old dachshund/Beagle mix, Phillip, was recently diagnosed with cancer. We are trying to make his limited time with us as happy and comfortable as possible. I know the silence will be deafening when he is gone.
Again, my sympathy to you and your husband. I am sure that Lucy is happily running in her unfenced garden in the sky.
Kathy K says

I am so sorry for your loss, I loved seeing Lucy in your posts. The special gift dogs bring into our lives is priceless and it seems so unfair they are here for such a short time, especially when you have such a special relationship with them. I lost my soul dog 4 years ago, Sam was 15 years old and I miss him everyday. Sending you and your family HH my sympathies.
Brianna says
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Lucy. She brought so much joy to us readers on your blog. I enjoyed all of her pictures, stories, and goofiness. Lucy was loved by you both and a world beyond her house and yard. May she forever live on in your memories and heart. Thinking of you both as you grieve and navigate without Lucy, one special pup.

This is hardest part of having pets, they are a huge part of our families. Thank goodness Lucy had such a loving home, she was always living her best life in your adventures. Mavis and HH, I am so sorry. I have enjoyed seeing Lucy over the last 12 years I’ve followed your blog. I thought it was so funny that you let her lick the pizza boxes, and now I let my dog do the same thing. She definitely was a loved Puggle Princess.
Lissa from Idaho says
I remember Lucy’s very first post. She has been a joy to follow here. Thank you for sharing her foibles with all of us. Long distance hugs.

I am so deeply sorry. I too remember way back when you first got her. What a cute little, hole digging, turkey chasing ( if I remember right), nail trim fighting, adorably sweet puggle princess she has always been. My words may ring hollow but she was loved by all of us too. May the love and joy of her memory soon comfort the emptiness in your heart. Biggest hugs to you and your family.
Debbi says

Like everyone else here, I’m sending condolences. I didn’t know how painful losing a dog could be until I lost mine after 15 1/4 years. It is just heartbreaking. Lucy lived a great life. I always enjoyed her escapes as well. Wishing you both peace during such a sad time.

I am SO so sorry!! I am sitting here crying for you. Even when we know it’s inevitable, the gut punch is real!
I lost my special dog named Hillbilly about 10 years ago, at 14 she had to be put to sleep. Even a year after she was gone, I still heard her little nail clicks behind me when I was walking and I‘d have to turn and look…even when I KNEW she wasn’t there.
Nancy says
So sorry for your loss. I hope your many happy memories are a comfort in a hard time.
Kelly says
Thank you so much for giving Lucy an incredible life. Know that she loved you as you loved her.
Also thank you for sharing her with your readers. I love dogs, and I loved reading about Lucy.

Eileen Stewart says
I burst into tears the moment I saw the title of today’s post. I have loved Lucy through your photos and words for her entire life. I know you are crying over losing her. I still cry for all the pets I have lost over my life – some twenty-two pets have come and gone now. We are down to one dog and two cats now, along with a bunch of chickens and a couple of turkeys, but nothing ever replaces the ones we lose.
We moved to the country with a cat, one large pup, and two little ones just 8 years ago. All of the dogs had some age on them when we got here. Cindy the Dachshund, Molly the Shih Tzu and Opti the Big Mutt are up in the grove of trees we can see from the front porch. We’ll never cut that grove. We miss them all. Jack the Cat remains from our city life.
Don’t wait too long to get another pup. You have more love to give, and a pup out there needs y’all.
Emma says

I really hate to hear this. She was so loved and I enjoyed seeing her pictures and sweet brown eyes. You guys gave her the best and 13 1/2 years is amazing. We recently lost a beloved furbaby to cancer and understand the hole it leaves in you life. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I’m so sad to hear this. The older we get, the more loss we have, the more it becomes perfectly clear, love matters more than anything else in life. We’re grateful that you and HH got to share life and love with sweet Lucy and in return, you shared her with all of us. We are grateful and mourn with you.

I’m coming late to this (life has been messy lately), but I’m so sorry to hear about Lucy. We named our son after the cat we lost the year before he was born (the cat had a reasonable name–i promise we didn’t name our kid Mittens or something).
