This afternoon Lucy the puggle dog and I pulled up our first beets of the season. Aren’t they gorgeous? These are by far the biggest beets I’ve ever grown {it’s called neglect!} š But that’s not why I’m so excited.
This week I plan on getting most of my seeds planted for my fall vegetable garden. I planted some seeds last weekĀ and this week I’ll be direct sowing things like beets, turnips and parsnips. Maybe even some Brussels sprouts too.
If you are dreaming thinking about a fall vegetable garden, here are a few of my favorites:
- Gourmet Beets
- Broccoli Romanesco {this looks so cool!}
- Broccoli Raab Rapini {Chickpeas with Broccoli Raab and Bacon recipe}
- Artichoke Green & Purple
- Cauliflower Chef’s Choice Blend
- Bok Choy White Stem
- Kale Italian Lacinato Nero Toscana
- Lettuce Mesclun Gourmet Baby Greens
- Cosmic Purple {My favorite!}
- Calliope BlendĀ
- Danvers 126
How about you? What kind of vegetables do you like to plant for a fall harvest?

I remember planting like 4 different kinds of beets when my step father was still walking with us. What kind are these babies? They sure are BIG!

Got a start on my fall garden last night planting Rainbow Lights Swiss Chard, Royal Chantenay carrots and more Cranberry beans (don’t know if those will get far enough along to dry, but hey, I already had the seeds!) So excited to be planting fall veggies this year!

Wowza, your beets are big and beautiful. Mine don’t look half that good. We’ve been enjoying beet arugula walnut & goat cheese salads the last few weeks. Super duper yummy. I also canned pickled beets last week. It was my first canning experience. Not as scary as I thought it might be.
I’m going to start working on my fall garden this week. I’ve never done a spring or fall gardens before just summer. It’s been a great adventure starting seeds and experimenting. I feel like gardening is like a big science project. You just never know what might happen next. Very fun!

Color me jealous! The voles successfully ate every single beet, carrot, onion (yes ONION, you know what I read you were supposed to plant around your garden to deter voles and moles) and all my yellow squash and zucchini plants but one. š I’m digging the beet/carrot/onion area up and putting chicken wire down to hopefully keep them out so we can have some fall root veggies. I was SO looking forward to them. Hope they taste as delicious as they look!!!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
Oh that stinks Alicia. Sorry to hear that. I’m sure the chicken wire will help

Those pesky voles ate all of my potatoes and onions. They ate several tomato plants and the roots off of a couple of fruit trees. Nasty little buggers. Any suggestions for banishing them?
Kath says
I used to have the same problems with moles in Spain. I buried chicken wire (the kind with small holes) in the beds, effectively making giant long baskets to plant in. It worked for some years, then the wire deteriorated and the moles got in again, but were less destructive. Now, living in Washington, there are voles, even smaller than moles. I know because our cat brings at least one home every day. Perhaps if you have a cat. . .

Awesome!

Yes, please tell us what kind of beets those are, and how did they get so big?? I’ve planted tons of beets and planted them early, and my biggest one’s so far are the size of golf balls!!! Not sure I will need to plant more for winter……but I want THAT kind if I do plant more!!!! š
Mavis Butterfield says
Gourmet Blend from Botanical Interests. I didn’t do anything special to them. š

I can’t remember if, in previous years, you ever save seeds and replant next year’s garden with them, if you have can you post a tutorial for tomatoes?!? This year I bought seedlings from the farmer’s market mostly so I think I’ll be able to replant with them next summer. But I don’t know how to go about preserving them…help.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, I’ll do that. š

Hi Mavis!
My mom and I are going to attempt container gardening. We would like to plant in the next couple weeks. Can any of these be planted that way? We have been saving milk jugs (gallon) for eons with this in mind. We’ll cut the tops off and use them. The directions for a lot of these call for rows…could we plant them in the jugs? For example, 3-4 seeds (or whatever it calls for) per gallon jug?
I’m a newbie, wanna-be planter. I figure I have to start somewhere!
Thanks!!
Mavis Butterfield says
I bet your could grow the lettuce and bok choy in jugs. š Keep me posted and let me know how it works out.
