My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 — Spend More Time Doing What I Love
Would you take a look at this! Could it be? Fall is around the corner? Yes, yes I think it is. 🙂 🙂 🙂 I picked up my first acorns up off the driveway yesterday and skipped all the way home.
Goal #2 — Garden, Garden, Garden
Darrrrrrling, the herb garden I planted just outside the kitchen window is growing like mad. This time next year the little lavender plants I started from seed {along the back of the bed} will be big and bushy and the whole area will have a nice established look to it.
Goal #3 — Plant an Orchard {Calling it Quits on this one for this year.}
Miss Lemon has been busy producing more lemon babies for us. It’s only a matter of time now before they ripen {anyone here in New England now when that might be?}.
The coleus, black eyed Susan, and basil plants I started from seed this spring are growing well too. I think it would be fun to fill the entire back patio with pots next year. Maybe even plant a stock tank with pumpkins or nasturtiums or something that will overflow and on to the patio for a sort of rambling look.
Goal #4 — Gussy Up the Potting Shed Done!
I’m thinking about filling those empty spaces with parrot tulips this fall. What color would you select though?
Goal #5 — Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
I should have heirloom tomatoes and peppers to share in another week or two at the little red farm stand the HH built for me. I have one more batch of jam to make peach} and then I’ll be ready.
Goal #6 — Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books I’ve Been Meaning to Make.
I finished 1 patterns from my pattern bin this past {a giant cat head} and for some reason or another and finding it hard to make the time t get new hooked pieces added to my Etsy shop. Probably, because there is so much to do outside.
I started the year off with:
- 73 rugs in my pattern bin {now down to 39}
- 183 hooked flowers {finished 133, now down to 51}
- 10 “things” from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 — Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones} DONE!

Goal #8 — Split and Stack 2 Cords of Wood for Next Winter

Down to 3141 photos. Getting there.
Goal #10 –Lose the Muffin Top
No comment.
Goal #11 — Run, Walk or Crawl a 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon
We are at day 46 on the turtle baby watch. According to the Google, hatching could occur anytime between 45-90 days. Any day now people, ANY DAY NOW.
I have cleared a path down to the pond for the babies and The Girl and I are ready to assist if needed.
Goal #12 — Read or Listen to 26 New Books {16 down, 10 to go}
I finished The Gown two nights ago and highly recommend it! 🙂 I also made my way though the stack of magazines my neighbor let me look through and so I need to return those.
Magazines… Do you still have any magazine subscriptions?
I am waiting my turn on the library wait list for the following audio book{s}:
- On Writing {I’ve already listened to this 2 times but it’s sooo good, even if the only writing I do is an online journal.

Goal #14 — Clean Up 52 Old Recipes on the Blog
9 down, 44 to go. I’ll get crackin’ once fall {and cooler temps} come around.
Goal #15 — Fill 100 Canning Jars 41 down, 59 to go.
I plan on making peach jam today!! 🙂
So far this year I’ve I canned:
- 7 jars of Strawberry Jam
- 15 jars of Carrot Cake Jam
- 15 jars of Spiced Pear Jam
- 4 jars of Almond Pears.
Goal #16 — Finish Furnishing Our House
I didn’t come across any new furniture this week {I suppose I’d have to leave the house for that} but I did re-stain the patio chairs so you know, what’s old is new again. 😉
Furniture pieces I’m still on the hunt for:
Coffee table for the family roomConsole, cupboard or sideboard for the one and only tv in our house which is in the family room. I could totally live without a television, but my husband says the tv stays.Long rectangular table for the craft room.- Table for the formal dining room.
- 2 wing back chairs for the family room.
I’d also like to decorate the mantel in the keeping roomas well as put up some sort of decoration above the other321 fireplaces in the house. I’m not one for a lot of things on the walls, but it would be nice to throw up a little pilgrim bling on the plaster.
Goal #17 – 52 Dates with the HH {25 down, 27 to go}
Need I say more?
Goal #18 — Take One Adult Education Class Done {I’ve taken 2!}

Goal #21 — Visit 12 General Stores
8 down 4 to go. I have a new one on the list to visit this week! Wahoo… I think you’re going to like it.

- Harrisville General Store
- Dodge’s Store in New Boston, New Hampshire
- Zeb’s General Store in North Conway, New Hampshire
- Dan and Whit’s in Norwich, Vermont
- Hussey’s General Store in Windsor, Maine
Goal #22 — Compete with Carole….. Get on My Front Door Game On
The HH took the bunting down. 🙁 The star is still up though and I kind of feel like it belongs there. There’s a house up the street {kind of sort of} similar to mine and the neighbors has had a long skinny pineapple on the front door ever since we’ve lived here. Every time I walk past her house I think…. that pineapple… it’s perfect for the front of their house.
So maybe the star stays up for most of the year?
P.S. We’ve only watered our lawn TWICE this year… And look how green it is! It’s nuts.
Front Door Bling I’ve Made So Far This Year to Compete with Carole:
- Late January : Valentine Heart
- Late February : Shamrock
- Late March : Giant Carrot
- May: White wave petunia hanging basket
- June/July: Tin Star and Flag Bunting

How about YOU? What are your goals for 2019? If you told us about them HERE, check in! We want to know how you are doing. Because seriously, it’s so much easier to get those goals checked off your list when you have people rooting for you! 🙂

Mavis, you have found your happy place. Everything looks so neat, clean, green and perfect.

Potted citrus normally ripens in the October-December time frame. That’s when mine are ready to eat, anyway. Leave them on the tree until you’re ready to use them and they stay fresh that way. They can stay on until, possibly, late January, but by then they’re too ripe and starting to sprout. Looking forward to see what lemony delicious treat you’re going to make with Miss Lemon’s offerings…
LaToya says
Keep the star forever – it goes with the house, it’s a part of the house now.
Can you put a weathervane on the roof? I can see that up there too. Goes with your Americana vibe.
That green is luscious – I miss that from living in the humid south (but don’t miss the humidity itself).
Laura says
OMG…opened my computer this morning to this story and immediately thought of you!!

I don’t do any writing at all, but Stephen King seems like such a cool person that On Writing is one of my favorite books.

You definitely need something else for the front door for fall. A star reminds me of Christmas . Maybe a pumpkin or wreath with acorns?
I have a large stack of books to read this year. Our vacation is coming up soon so hopefully I can make a dent in it.
I’ve only made 2 batches of strawberry freezer jam so far. I’m hoping to make some peach jam too. I need to stock up the pantry with relish too. Maybe when the kids go back to school?
Julie says
Hi Mavis,
Thank you so much for doing your book list. This year has been one of the best book-reading years for me because of your list! I also fully agree with your number ranking of the books. I hope that you continue with it on your goals for next year. I love your blog and I am so happy that you’re happy in New England!
Mel says
For magazines, we only get Southern Living. I wonder if there’s a New England equivalent that might be fun.
I finished all my mini goals last week (treadmill, washing area rugs, freezer meals, finishing dusting walls and ceilings, etc.) except for re-sealing the granite and drying cayennes (that last goal seems cursed—every day I plan to do it, we have a thunderstorm), so I’ll get to those this week or next. If I can’t get the dehydrator going for the cayennes, I may just blend them with some oil and freeze to use instead of dried.
I’m taking a break from goals the next week or two since I need all spare time to move into my new office for work, but switching my original goals to mini weekly goals made for an amazingly productive summer. Our house was torn apart due to a series of disasters in the spring, but I got every room, closet, and drawer de-cluttered, cleaned, and organized, set up first aid kits for people and pets, made over 140 freezer meals and over 60 freezer breakfasts, went running 4 times a week, donated heaps of stuff, and got the house and myself back into a routine for the school year. I feel so much better than I did at the start of summer.

Down East and Yankee Magazine I think.

I have a suggestion for an audiobook for you (recently retired librarian here). I just finished it and thought, given your love for Lucy the Puggle Princess that you would enjoy it too (forgive if you’ve already listened to it) . The book si called ‘Peggy and Me’ – it’s written and read by British comedian Miranda Hart. It’s the story of her relationship with Peggy, her Shih-Tzu Bichon Frise, and their adventures together.
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks HollyG I’ll have to look it up! I loved her in Call the Midwife.
Mary says
I too am enjoying your book reads. I listened to “How to survive your childhood Now that you’re an adult” and it is so helpful/cathartic. There are a few cursings towards the end but I had to forgive him after all the great info he gave about forgiveness, pain and suffering. I know there are several people who could really benefit from this and will be suggesting it to them, too. Love the yard/gardens our water bill is around $200 and we’re in Idaho with the watering every night all night long, yikeees!
E in Upstate NY says
Oh I wish to have a $200 water bill. The basic bill has gone up to $418 a year! And of course, there was no advance warning about the significant increase, which was due at the end of the month. There was much complaining about this year’s water bill. Even though I had the water turned off inside the house [not living there and concerned about freezing pipes], still had to pay the basic bill. Now have the meter pulled, [it was leaking on city side] there should be no bill, at least for me. Am in process of selling house.
Lynda Kling says
My favorite magazine is the British Country Living…well worth the price of a subscription!
Amber says
Tulips by the shed: I might go with reds and purples there, I think that would look nice.
I get BHG in paper form, and Martha Stewart Living digitally on my Kindle. I still love Martha. I don’t care!
