The fence panels and posts arrived yesterday morning. I was so excited when I saw the truck! The HH was even more excited because he knew he didn’t have to install them. 🙂
We ended up going with a 4 foot high Nantucket style {cedar} fence. Four feet seemed like the perfect height to us. Not too tall, not too short. It will probably take me all summer to get the whole fence stained on both sides but that’s okay.
I do love staining fences. Especially outside in the warm sunshine. It’s so relaxing to me.
Once the fence is fully installed I’ll be able to get all the perennials I’ve been collecting planted and Lucy will be able to hang out in the vegetable garden with me.
Look how much bigger the backyard looks now with the fence installed. It’s crazy!! I told the HH we totally have room for a few more raised garden beds and he just shook his head at me. HA HA HA.
Today they’ll work on the front fence and then the gates and with a little luck the whole thing will be done by the weekend. I love fences. And I love defined spaces.
And you know what else I love?
Delphiniums! I picked up a few pots at Market Basket and I absolutely LOVE the purpley blue color of the flowers.
These will be the first delphiniums I’ve ever planted in a garden before and I’d love to have more. Have you ever grown delphiniums from seed before? Are they easy to grow?
I’m sure it’s too late to start seeds this year, but if they’re easy to grow I think I’d like to grow a patch of them next year. Planting and painting. That’s what I’ll be doing all summer. And that’s fine by me.
Here’s hoping today is another productive day here in Maine.
Peace Out.

Nothing says home like a sweet picket fence, I just love them and yes your yard looks so much bigger now. Also yes you could add more beds LOL. Never grew delphiniam from seed but have always bought them and love them in my gardens. Happy staining.

I bet the HH is thrilled. I just read a good article in the N. Y. post about the decline of the picket fence and how they had been replaced with tall, solid plastics. Apparently it’s changed American landscapes and neighborliness and a few other dynamics. Good fences make good neighbors as the saying goes and you choose a beautiful classic.

Our neighbors just told us about the article this afternoon. How crazy is that? I LOVE picket fences.

I like delphiniums too. Also have a funny delphinium story to share. As a kid back in the late 50’s my grandmother had a new bull calf, a yearly event as she would raise him to butcher every fall. Anyway I asked Grammie what his name was as she always gave her critters unusual names. I THOUGHT she said Delphinium but actually she said Joe Feeney (she was an avid Lawrence Welk fan). She was quite surprised when I repeated Delphinium and she had to straighten me out. Actually I always called him Delphinium as there already was a Joe Feeney.

Do you live in an Historic District? Are there restrictions on your fence size, stain, or color. I think it will look great no matter what you do, but my 2 cents (go figure – there’s no symbol for cents on my laptop) worth is go for a natural, weathered look.

How charming it will all be!!! I love Delphiniums too but in Bonney Lake, WA my plants never lived through a winter. I hope yours do. Mulch them well in the Fall and maybe they will make it. Cannot wait to see all of your adorable property done!!

Delphiniums are pernnials too. Mine have come back bigger and better every year!

How did it get the name “Nantucket” ?

The Puckett fence really neatens a space. They aren’t a big thing here people mostly have walls out front and lap fencing or tree s out the back. I love delphiniums, I don’t have any in my garden as every part of the plant ‘larkspur’ is highly toxic to humans and animals just a thought to bear in mind. I have a curious grandson so no delphiniums for me. I don’t think our old lab would go near them though she just likes snoozing these days 🙂
