On a drive through Wells, Maine recently to pick up some rug hooking supplies, we passed by a sign for the Saltwater Farm Cafe and decided to pop in and have a look around.
Originally we were just going to get some tea, but the place looked so warm and inviting, that on a whim we decided to order breakfast.
And I’m so glad we did!!
While we were at the counter ordering our breakfast, I noticed a sign for bread. Assuming they made the bread themselves, I asked to buy a loaf of their cinnamon bread.
Before heading to our seats, we looked around a bit and discovered they sell not only ready made meals, but beer and wine and local and some canned/pickled goods as well.
Maine is sort of interesting that way. It seems like nearly every independent business loves to share other Mainers products. I’ve seen locally made products show up at florists, gift shops, antique stores, gas stations, even the dentist’s office. And it always makes me smile.
That bread I ordered at the counter? It wasn’t made in house. It was actually made by Fire King Baking Company in Massachusetts. I was a little confused at first.
But then after a little bit of research, we discover the bread is made for the restaurants, caterers and retailers. AND HOLY COW MAN… It’s pretty much one of the BEST cinnamon breads we had ever tasted. Seriously, it makes the best French toast on the planet earth.
I think it’s right up there with Shirley’s iced cinnamon raisin bread {and that’s saying something!!}.
I had the eggs benedict. Which is what I always order on a breakfast menu when I see it. And it too, was fantastic.
It looks like we found another winner.
Saltwater Farm Cafe in Wells, Maine. It’s just another reason to visit the great state of Maine!

I would love the small town local-supporting environment! It feels like a more european model than what most of us experience in the Suburban US. My goal is to retire somewhere where I can walk for my errands 🙂 (basically “downtown” in a small area, probably)

Question. Mavis do you freeze Shirley’s loaves before you ice them? Thanks
Mavis Butterfield says
I freeze it with the icing, just like Shirley does.

Late for a comment, but the king looks like “where’s my bite of French toast?!!” Lol.
Bonnie from GA says
Or eggs Benedict rather. Lol.
