Yesterday, I slept in til 8am. It was awesome. Then I got up and made the HH breakfast in bed, threw on my garden clothes and headed out to get some work done.
Do you like roasted vegetables? Because if you do, now would be a great time to plant a few seeds. Yesterday I planted a packet of All American Parsnip seeds in one of my raised flower beds. I’m not a huge fan of parsnips, but the HH and my Dad are. And around here we LOVE to eat roasted vegetables in the fall. So if you haven’t already planted you carrots, beets, turnips and parsnips, now’s the time to do it.
At some point Monkey Boy and the Handsome Husband wandered outside. Neither of them are really into gardening {okay, so they are not into gardening at all} but just because they don’t enjoying growing food, doesn’t mean they can help in the garden every once in a awhile.
Typically their limited garden duties include moving the lawn and keeping the weeds pulled in the front yard. But sometimes I like to amuse them by having them lift heavy objects for me.
I had the boys haul the gutter I had planted with French Carrots outside so I could harvest them and re-plant it with basil seeds. This whole gardening in gutters thing and been quite a learning experience for me. So far I have been successful with growing strawberries, lettuce, spinach, radishes and basil in the gutters.
And although the baby French Carrots turned out like they were supposed to, {about the size of a quarter} I don’t think I’ll grow them in the greenhouse again.
The best way to learn about gardening, {in my opinion} is through trial and error. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. But you’ll never know unless you try.
So how about YOU? Did you get to sleep in yesterday? Do you work in the garden?
What have you been up to the past few days?

thanks for the note on root veggies – I will get those carrots rockin in the dirt!

It’s time to rock Brandi! 🙂

Those baby carrots are the cutest! I often see pix of you with headphones on while you are gardening. Do you have a garden mix you listen to? 🙂
Mavis says
Nope. 🙂

I attempted sleeping in but my wee one wouldn’t allow it. I worked in the garden all day yesterday. We’ve had small raised beds the last couple of years but this year we put in a 30×12 foot raised bed. I think I’m in over my head, but I’m way too excited to care!
It’s funny though because where I was worrying it was too big to fill, now I’m realizing I may need a couple more! I hope I’m as successful as you eventually!
My hubby broke down and bought me some chickens this year as well and that’s been quite the adventure.
Here’s to our mini farm! 😉
P.S. Thanks for all the laughs in your posts. They are fun to read.

I WISH I could still work in my garden! I have a bad back, and unfortunately, gardening usually flares it up. My boys are getting old enough though that they are good helpers outside. And my husband is helpful too. But they don’t see all of the weeds I see! Don’t get me wrong…I’m very grateful for their help though! 🙂
I did not get to sleep in yesterday….although the payoff was getting to spend time with our extended family to celebrate my nephew graduating from high school.
Question about gardening in gutters….what exactly is the point? So that you don’t have to deal with weeds? Interesting concept.

Well…since you asked… 😉 I never sleep in. My brain was miswired somewhere. I live in the Mojave Desert (literally)…and I just planted my first “Garden”, which is actually a bookshelf filled with garden soil and some seeds. I wanted to see if I could grow ANYTHING. So far, my carrots, peppers and beans are doing well. We’ll see if they can withstand the 109s!!! (temperatures!) Love your blog 🙂

Nope, didn’t get to sleep in, but I did do all my errands on Saturday and was 99% sure I saw you at Albertsons!

Next time come up and say hello! 🙂
