Well, this whole sit at home all winter long all cozy and warm without a home improvement project on the honey to do list came to a screeching halt last night. After looking over to my husbands computer screen before turning off the lamp, I spied him looking at an empty table in a restaurant.
Mavis: “What is that!?”
HH: “There’s this steakhouse in Texas where you can get a free steak dinner if you can eat the entire meal within 60 minutes. They have a live stream and you can watch people attempt to eat the big steak dinner.”
Mavis: I just rolled my eyes… and then waited for it… waited for the story I didn’t want to listen to but knew I was going to hear it anyway.
And then he proceed to tell me about the Big Texan Steak Ranch and Brewery and the low down on their 72 Ounce Steak Dinner Challenge {which this morning I had to look up on online because seriously… I tuned him out pretty early into his whole spiel}. š
What the 72 ounce steak dinner includes:
- Shrimp Cocktail
- Baked Potato
- Salad with Roll, Butter
- 72oz Steak
The Rules for the 72 Ounce Steak Dinner Challenge
1. Entire meal must be completed in one hour. If any of the meal is not consumed (swallowed)ā¦YOU LOSE!
2. Before the time starts, you will be allowed to cut into the steak, and take one bite. If the steak tastes good and is cooked to your satisfaction, we will start the time upon your acceptable approval. The time will not stop, and the contest is on, so make SURE before you say āyes.ā
3. Once you have started you are not allowed to stand up, leave your table, or have anyone else TOUCH the meal.
4. You will be disqualified if anyone assists you in cutting, preparing or eating of your meal. This is YOUR contest.
5. You donāt have to eat the fat, but we will judge this.
6. Should you become ill, the contest is overā¦ YOU LOSE! (Please use the container provided as necessary.)
7. You are required to pay the full amount up front; if you win we will refund 100%.
8.You must sit at a table that we assign.
9. If you do not win the steak challenge, you are welcome to take the leftovers with you.
10. No consumption or sharing of the leftovers is allowed in the restaurant once the contest is over.
11. If you fail to complete the challenge, you must pay the full $72 dollars.
Now I don’t know about you, but I’d have a tough time eating a 6 once steak plus sides all by myself… But according to pictures on Instagram, there was a lady last year who ate not one, BUT TWO steak dinners within under 60 minutes!!! HOLY CANOLIES!
The Big Texan… this family friendly place {they serve their kids meals in cowboy hats!!} looks like a total hoot and a place Mrs. HB and I would stop at if we were on a road trip and anywhere near Amarillo, Texas.
That being said, this is only November, and if my husband is already wasting spending his time watching live streams of people eating steak dinners… one could only imagine what he’d find to research once winter really set in.
Well, I won’t have to worry about that now. I just placed an order for some tile, paint and a new light fixture for the entryway.
Winter house project #1, here we come.
Thanks Big Texan! š š š
Have an AWESOME weekend everyone, may it be a productive one.

Oh yes! HH will be happier accomplishing some house project over the winter! (Or, at least your readers will be happier. After all, our entertainment is your responsibility. hahaha)

And if he needs more projects send him my son’s way. He just bought a house and needs a few manageable things done.
Alison says
My nephew actually ate the steak there a few years ago….
My husband needs a list of things to do too he spends alot of time watching live feeds of the fort Lauderdale harbor because our son is a pilot that brings them in. He also watches a few other live, boring feeds….
KC says
See, to me, I’d be less worried if someone was watching live, boring feeds vs. watching something that raises their blood pressure and makes them yell at the TV (sports, etc.) and then they’re riled and weird for some period of time afterwards. Expensive hobbies? Not great, unless you’re rich. Stressful hobbies? Ditto. But hobbies that look boring? Excellent!
Someone who’s not continually overstimulated is *also* more likely to be able to listen to a real human being without interrupting every 20 seconds. So, yes, it’s nice to get things done in the physical world and have the accomplishments/satisfaction/productivity, and I wouldn’t discourage anyone with “boring hobbies” from doing home improvement projects or tutoring or other good things, but it’s also good to be able to enjoy being chill, rather than always being itchy unless there’s a lot of stimuli/excitement.

We stopped there (by happy accident) on a cross country drive in 2018. Neither my husband or I attempted the free meal. However, while we were there we saw 2 guys try & it wasnāt pretty. The table is elevated for better viewing and there are trash cans (or more precisely, vomit bags) next to each chair. The woman who holds the record is actually on the small side too!
Tanya says
Sounds like āThe Old 76erā from the 80s movie The Great Outdoors. Makes me nauseous just thinking about eating a steak that big.
Heather says
Ha! We were driving through a few years ago and had a (normal) lunch there but a guy from Europe actually did the challenge while we were there and finished! We called a couple of our family members to watch on the live stream while we were there. It was fun!
Elle says
I put away a 20oz porterhouse once (trimmed of fat of course). Not sure about anything else that meal. I only know 2 guys who might be willing to attempt that and I’m not sure either will ever get to Amarillo š
Projects! Good idea š
Brianna says
So all you get basically is a free dinner out of it to feel miserable? You save $72 or spend $72 to complete the challenge. I personally am not a fan of food challenges or competitions, I think they are unhealthy and can have catastrophic consequences. The human body is not made to be gorged and filled like that. Yuck!
Jeanine says
I noticed the steak is rare as your HH pointed out. 72 ounces of meat is too much for a stomach to take. Whew!
Iām looking forward to your home projects this winter. After all, what is HH going to do all winter long besides shoveling snow?
Maria says
gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins. As in your arteries hardening and getting choked on your own vomit sin. That is gross.
Jenny Young says
My family stopped here to eat steak on our way home from a road trip in the southwest. We did not order the 72 Ounce steak & they were not live-streaming the people who were eating because this was at least 15 yrs ago.

This post gave me a good chuckle. Although I would never do a food challenge because there is no way I would win! I do understand some people taking on the challenge. I once witnessed a couple friends sons do a hot wing challenge and it was hard to watch. After there was vomiting!
On a side note, watching people eat doesn’t sound interesting to me but I guess its a real thing on social media.
A few years back I was in the hospital and couldn’t eat for 10+ days (years to eat normally). I began watching cooking shows every single day and continued for a few months while I was bed ridden. The hospital staff said it was a very common phenomenon. Who knew?
Can’t wait to see the new home project! I love how handy your HH is. Mine just thinks he is handy:)

I lived in Amarillo nearly 10 years. The Big Texan was there during that time, but I never set foot in it. I’m not a big steak fan. I know, what?!
Renovation starting and we can hardly wait to see the results š
Linda Sand says
We ate there once but didn’t do the challenge. No one else was doing it while we were there so we missed the dinner show. Which is probably a good ting. š
I watched a video of a woman doing the challenge one time. She simply picked up the steak with her hands, took a bite, and swallowed. No silverware and no chewing. Ugh! How desperate would you have to be to do that?
Becka says
This summer when all our grown children and their families were visiting we discovered that both our son and son in law enjoy watching the same chiropractic show on You Tube. We had no idea such a thing existed.
Laura says
Great, now I’m addicted to the live feed too. Kinda fun to watch, though I could never do it. But now on my bucket list is to go have dinner there cause the steaks they are cooking in the background look devine! HH I’m with ya!
Chyrl says
Thank your husband for me! I thought the live feed was interesting. The guys who were trying it seemed to be having a good time and the guys on the grill are great! I live in Texas and enjoy a good ribeye but it has to be much smaller. By the way, my husband thinks I’m nuts for watching other people shop Christmas decor on you tube. I say to each their own! Make yourself happy!
Kara says
We stopped at that very place on a road trip from CA to FL!! We did not do the challenge, and no one was doing it while we were there. But I will always remember that place!! Iām a picky eater plus I have allergies, and finding places to eat on a long haul road trip is very challenging!
Renay says
Been there, but never did the challenge. Great place!
Deborah says
May I say that I have eaten at the Big Texan, and NO I did not attempt to eat that huge steak. That was back in the 60’s mind you and there were 7 of us. I was about 12 at the time. I have met a few who might like to try and eat that meal, but WHY? Thanks for a fond memory.
Nancy E. says
Itās amazing that so many readers here have been to that steak house! Small world! Now I know where to stop in Amarillo.
Karen Kolb says
We stopped there on our way to DisneyLand two years ago and we loved the restaurant! We just ordered normal meals, but two men tried to eat the big one while we were there. They were not successful, but it was fun to watch!
